Apple's Phil Schiller quits Instagram over Android version
Apple's senior VP for worldwide product marketing has quit Instagram, reports note. Phil Schiller previously had an account under "@schiller," but that profile has since been deleted. The executive is still on Twitter, and explained in a post that "it [Instagram] 'jumped the shark' when it went to Android."

We already chewed the cud on these 20.3-megapixel shooters in the early hours of this morning, but Samsung knows we have multiple stomachs for this kind of thing so it invited us in for a little hands-on time. Yandex co-founder says Google is anti-competitive
The co-founder of Russia's top search engine Yandex has gone on record to criticize Google's Android and Chrome products, UK paper The Guardian reported. Ilya Segalovich called the Android OS a "strange combination of openness and not openness," while the Chrome browser was said to be anti-competitive. Segalovich's comments, in turn, were prompted by Google co-founder Sergey Brin's opinions on the threats to the open Internet.

Chitika: HTC traffic share has dropped 60% in five months
HTC's market challenges have seen it lose more than half of its share of online usage, Chitika found in a new study. Its traffic on Chitika's relatively large ad network has dropped 60 percent in the space of five months, down to 7.3 percent of the total in March. While only representative of Chitika's share, it contrasted with Apple's gain in the same space of time, where it leapt from 46.8 percent in October to 76.9 percent in March.

Creating a DIY AppMates toy car
Our Dave Caolo likes the idea behind Disney's AppMates cars but felt the cost ($20 street price) was a bit steep for what is, essentially, a cheap car with a few capacitive pads.
He challenged me to see if I could turn a basic Matchbox unit into an AppMate-compatible iPad accessory. I created an aluminum band around a Matchbox car's belly, attached two "pads" (folded Kleenex wrapped in aluminum foil), and ran the app in "Paper" car mode -- which requires only two points of contact on the screen at any time.

AMD trotz hohem Verlust über den Erwartungen
Nach Börsenschluss am Abend hat auch AMD die Zahlen für das erste Quartal bekanntgegeben. AMD reports net loss of $590 million for Q1 2012, calls that 'solid results'
We're not sure about you, but we wouldn't call losing over half a billion dollars, "solid results." Still, we're not 100 percent ready to rain on AMD's parade yet. The non-GAAP results (which disregard a pile of one-time charges and investments) turn the $590 million loss into a $92 million profit. Though, the GAAP results do make two straight quarters of losses and revenue clearly continued to decline -- falling to $1.59 billion. Smith Micro has posted a major update for Poser, Service Release 2. Poser is the company's flagship software, handling 3D rendering and animation of characters and props. Microsoft's Windows group returns to profit in record winter
Microsoft saw its Windows unit partly return to form on Thursday as it once again reported gains. Following Windows division losses in the fall, the group has seen its revenue go up four percent to just over $4.6 billion. The segment succeeded mostly on the back of business desktops and infrastructure, Microsoft said, suggesting that home users and pro notebooks were still struggling.

Analysts: Qualcomm 28nm crunch hurting/helping new iPhone
Analysts at Citigroup and Piper Jaffray helped trigger stock market jitters on Thursday over the implications of LTE chip supply as it relates to Apple. Following Qualcomm statements after its quarterly results that there was a supply shortage of its 28 nanometer chips made at TSMC, Citi's Glen Yeung and Piper's Gene Munster both suggested that was a direct sign of Apple choosing a 28nm MSM9615 cellular chipset for its next iPhone. Voice Answer is an interesting solution for those that don't have Siri
Siri is very clever, and has had a significant impact on how iPhone users interact with the world of information. The problem is, Siri is iPhone 4S only, and even the new iPad has only voice dictation.
We've looked at Evi, which is a third-party solution, but it's had some reliability issues (so has Siri), and I think iOS users are looking for a bit more.

Apple defends definition of '4G' for Australian iPad
Apple has filed a defense with Australia's Federal Court, contesting an argument by the country's Competition and Consumer Commission that the third-gen iPad shouldn't be marketed as 4G in the country. While the tablet does support LTE 4G, it is currently only compatible with LTE networks in Canada and the US. Apple suggests that 3G networks run by Australian carriers Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone are "4G networks in accordance with accepted industry and regulatory use of the descriptor '4G.'

Sony alliance gets EU approval to buy EMI music publishing
A group led by Sony on Thursday won its side of a joint bid on EMI assets. The alliance, which includes the Blackstone Group, David Geffen, Mubadala Development, and Raine Group, was cleared by the European Commission to buy EMI's publishing wing for $2.2 billion. The deal is contingent on Sony's group selling off catalog rights for Virgin's European, UK, and US divisions, along with Famous Music UK.

Cablevision Optimum App for Laptop exits private beta stage
Cablevision, which makes the Optimum iPad app that lets users watch live TV when on their home network, has now launched the Optimum App for Laptop. As the name suggests, the app lets Cablevision TV subscribers watch live TV on any Windows PC or Mac connected to their wireless network. Krise? Sony kauft den Back-Katalog der EMI für 2,2 Milliarden Dollar

Trotz 6,4 Milliarden Dollar Verlust in 2011 und der Streichung von 10.000 Stellen scheint Sony irgendwo noch ein paar Milliarden auf Tasche zu haben. 2,2 davon haben sie jetzt benutzt, um gemeinsam mit einem Konsortium den Back-Katalog der EMI aufzukaufen. Verizon: shared data by mid-summer, Windows Phone important
As part of the call discussing its fiscal results, Verizon on Thursday both narrowed down its shared data plan schedule and reiterated that it was still interested in Windows Phone. The shared data would be coming in mid-summer, CFO Fran Shammo said. The tier is expected to significantly reduce the cost of having more than one smartphone in a family.

AT&T to release Watson voice recognition APIs
AT&T will be releasing developer application-programmer interfaces (APIs) for its Watson speech engine this June, according to a write-up over at the Verge. Developers will be able to add voice recognition features to their applications by integrating AT&T programming calls. The APIs will support web and business search, SMS and dictation, among other options.
Meant for deployment to mobile devices and smart TVs, Watson promises to provide region-sensitive accent-aware transcription of speech-to-text, including ways to expand vocabulary for specific technical needs such as medical transcription.

HTC denies accusations of breaking Apple patents
Lawyers for HTC today defended the company in a London courtroom, insisting it isn't violating Apple patents, Bloomberg reports. At stake are four patents, covering multi-touch, slide-to-unlock, zooming and scrolling for photos, and the use of different character sets for text messages. Report: iPhone 4S sales slowing in developing market
Analyst T. Michael Walkley of Canaccord Genuity told investors in a Thursday research note that iPhone 4S sales are slowing in "certain developed markets," according to a report by AppleInsider. Some of this slowdown can be attributed to a fresh crop of dual-core and quad-core Android phones coming out soon. Walkley also notes that some customers may be waiting for the next generation iPhone to arrive.

AT&T reported that it is continuing the expansion of its 4G LTE network throughout the US, with Akron and Canton, Ohio and Lafayette, Indiana being added to the list.
AT&T is promising 4G LTE expansion to 12 cities by summer, including Cleveland, Ohio; Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana; Naples, Florida; St. Louis, Missouri; and Staten Island, New York.

Executives from Samsung and Apple may be sitting down to discuss patents and infringement, but the legal battle between the two companies is far from over. According to a report from FOSS Patents, Samsung accused Apple of infringing on eight patents in a California lawsuit filed last Wednesday. Rather than target only mobile devices in this suit, Samsung took out the big guns and is aiming at iPhones, iPads, Mac computers, Apple TV, iCloud and iTunes.

Apple and HTC are exchanging blows in a London court case over claims the Taiwanese manufacturer infringes on four Apple patents, says a Bloomberg report. These patents cover various multi-touch gestures, photo zooming and scrolling, slide-to-unlock and the use of a multilingual alphabet when sending text messages.

Nokia head of sales resigns, department aims to reduce 'layers of management'
Colin Giles, Nokia's executive vice president of sales, has announced that he's stepping down. It follows the company's dour financial results for Q1 and will lead to a restructuring of the company's sales organization, aiming to strip layers from what's currently in place. AT&T brings 4G LTE to Akron, Canton, and Lafayette
AT&T is continuing to expand its 4G LTE network offerings this year, now bringing the network to Akron and Canton in Ohio, as well as Lafayette, Indiana. FireCore just updated aTV Flash (black), an alternative software package for the second generation Apple TV. With a jailbroken Apple TV and the FireCore software, you can use the media device to surf the web, stream content from a NAS, play back popular media formats (MKV, AVI, MP4) and more.
The latest version of the aTV Flash (black) package brings the software to release version 1.5. This version adds support for NFS streaming, subtitle timing settings, new language translations and a bunch of improvements and fixes. Apple claims 95 percent compliance on supplier working hours
Apple has updated its monthly Supplier Responsibility report with data from March, claiming an improvement in suppliers following rules on excessive working hours. Suppliers are, officially, expected to demand no more than 60 hours a week per person. Compliance grew to 95 percent in March, up from 89 percent in February, and 84 percent in January.

Der Kalifornier James Price ist Fluglotse und Hobbypilot und somit tagein tagaus mit dem Fliegen beschäftigt, aber das reichte ihm offensichtlich nicht: Seit zwölf Jahren tüftelt er an einem Flugsimulator, der auf einer echten Lufthansa Boeing 737 aus dem Jahr 1969 aufbaut. Sein ungewöhnliches Hobby hat ihn bisher bereits 150.000 Dollar gekostet und trotzdem ist er noch lange nicht fertig, denn es gibt ständig neue, verführerische Features, die er in seinen Vogel integrieren möchte. We haven't heard very much from PopCap on iOS lately. There was the Zuma's Revenge launch a little while ago, and before that was just the Bejeweled shakeup last year. So it's good to see the company is still working on the platform. The latest evidence of this is a surprise update for Plants vs. Zombies, out now, which brings a few shiny new features.

Sometimes, two dimensional photos, even those taken by a 41-megapixel sensor, simply aren't enough to accurately depict a three dimensional object. Enter Arqball Spin, a free app that lets anyone with an iOS device create high-quality 3D models of whatever they like. Verizon ships 6.3m smartphones, mum on iPhone for now
Verizon reported winter quarter results that were defined by smartphones, albeit with current gaps in its data. The company saw a slight 4.6 percent increase in revenue to $28.2 billion but a much wider 15.7 percent jump in its net profit, which it quantified as 59 cents per share. Smartphones were key to the growth, Verizon said: 6.3 million were sold in the period, making up 72 percent of all its subscription phones.

Nokia posts €590m net loss with smartphone sales halving
Nokia has posted (pdf) another disappointing quarterly result. For the first quarter of 2012, it has reported an operating loss of €1.3b, with a net loss of €590m. Nokia had originally hoped to turn a small profit for the period, but a massive dive in smartphone sales put an end to that more optimistic outlook. Instead, the company only sold 11.9 smartphones for the quarter against the 24.9 million it did during the same period last year.

Nokia's released the bundle of spreadsheets that comprise its 2012 Q1 financials, just a week after it promised it would make a loss, despite bullish sales of the new Lumia 900. The numbers reveal that the company had net sales of €7.4 billion ($9.7 billion), down from €10.4 billion ($13.6 billion) at the start of last year. Apple hat ein Update 1.0.1 für den Apple Configurator veröffentlicht. Die App erlaubt es, mehrere iOS-Geräte für den Einsatz in Unternehmen, Bildungseinrichtungen und anderen Organisationen auf einmal zu konfigurieren. Das Update verbessert allgemein die Stabilität und Leistung, bringt aber auch kleinere Neuerungen.
Der Apple Configurator 1.0.1 verspricht nun ein korrektes Importieren und Installieren von .ipa-Erweiterungen, erlaubt den Import von Einlösecodes für den App Store und die erneute Verwendung eines solchen Codes, wenn ein bisher vom Configurator “betreutes” Gerät entfernt und komplett gelöscht wurde oder die Installation auf einem anderen Gerät nicht beendet wurde. Report: Apple Stores outsell national average by 17 times
Marketing and technology analysis firm Asymco has extrapolated from retail data from US chains to reveal that Apple isn't just the top seller per square foot among US retailers, it outsells the average brick-and-mortar outlet 17 times over. Intel has set ambitious targets for the number of ultrabooks it hopes will sell this year, part suppliers understood late Wednesday. Leak: Samsung Galaxy S III to have 'superlative' quad-core
Following launch secrecy details, a second leak Wednesday has dropped hints that the Galaxy S III, or whatever the device is named, may be a breakthrough in speed. The same source for The Verge as earlier said it would use the rumored quad-core chip, likely the Exynos 4412, and deliver "superlative benchmark performance." Mail from iCloud hit with small-scale outages
Some iCloud users have been affected by mail outages, according to reader reports and status updates from Apple. The problem is said to affect less than one percent of iCloud users, but causes those users to be unable to retrieve e-mail. The problem began around 7 a.m. (Pacific Time) and is ongoing. EditShare to debut all-new, free LightWorks on May 28th
Lightworks, a non-linear video editor (NLE) with a long history that was announced as going open-source and multi-platform two years ago, is preparing for a release on Monday, May 28th after several delays. While the debut will be Windows-only, developers EditShare plan on making OS X and Linux versions available shortly afterwards. The program will be unique in being the only open-source, multi-platform NLE video app. A pro version will also be made available.

Apple says decision to face DOJ trial voluntary, talks to EU
Apple on Wednesday stated that its confronting a Department of Justice lawsuit over e-book pricing was deliberate. Attorney Daniel Floyd told Judge Denise Cote that Apple believed the lawsuit was "not an appropriate case" and wanted to prove itself in court. The company wanted this to be "decided on the merits," Reuters heard while observing Floyd at a hearing.

Best Buy to run Windows Phone 'parties' with giveaways
Best Buy and Microsoft have teamed up on a Behind the Tiles series of events to spur on Windows Phone sales that borrow a handful of Apple cues. Running from Thursday to as late as May 17, some stores will be holding workshops that both let users try the overall lineup and undertake a "deep dive" into the Lumia 900 with an instructor. Zynga-owned Draw Something finally gets update for sharing, undo
Most of our stories about Draw Something since the game's launch have been business related. After it garnered tens of millions of users in its first few weeks, the company that makes the game, OMGPOP, was bought by Zynga for a whopping $200 million. But here's finally something to show after all of that hubbub: The game has been updated on the App Store with a few features that probably should have been in there all along.

Spotify says iPad app is 'in the works'
Spotify held an event in New York this week to make a "special announcement," and unfortunately, it wasn't about anything having to do with the streaming music service's long awaited iPad app. It was, instead, about some deal that they're making with Coke, which will start off as some sort of branded apps.
Anyway, nobody really cares about all of that (or at least, it's up to Spotify and Coke to make people care -- the marketing budget probably has plenty of money slated in it for just that reason). Nope the thing everyone wanted to know about was the iPad app, and founder Daniel Ek confirmed that it is still "in the works." Unfortunately, that's all he said about that.

Apple Stores' Genius Bars may get local wireless iOS syncing
A new rumor Wednesday had Apple finding a unique way to safeguard the data of iOS device users visiting the Genius Bar for a replacement. Apple's retail store labs were purported by 9to5 to be testing Wi-Fi nodes that would clone an iCloud backup on to a local server. Once the replacement was done, a Genius technician would simply pull the local iCloud backup, getting it much faster than they would if they had to go to the Internet first.
