Cable TV iPad apps prove popular with customers
GigaOm has posted some interesting numbers about cable providers' apps that allow subscribers to watch TV right on their iPads.
Time Warner Cable stated on its earnings call that its TWCable TV app has been downloaded more than 360,000 times in just under a month. Comcast's XFinity TV app (out since November) has been downloaded a whopping 1.5 million times and Cablevision's Optimum app had 50,000 downloads in just five days.

Phil Schiller denies white iPhone 4 thicker than black
Observations that the white iPhone 4 was thicker than the black model were given an unusual challenge on Sunday by Apple's VP of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller. Mac and iOS make large strides in web share, IE9 too
Apple made one of its best strides in recent memory for market share on the web last month, NetApplications determined on Sunday. The Mac reached a new adjusted high of 5.4 percent market share, but its gains were small relative to iOS. Led mostly by the iPhone, Apple's combined mobile platform jumped 16.5 percent and staked out 2.24 percent of all web traffic.

Gigabyte's S1080 Windows tablet undressed by the FCC
Looks like Gigabyte's S1080 tablet, which landed in Taiwan earlier this month, is getting ready to hit shelves here in the US. The 10.1-inch Windows 7 slate stopped by the FCC, where it got cracked open and had its silicon-packed innards exposed for the camera. Blurb is best known for self-publishing books, but a new iPhone app expands the company's scope to mobile storytelling. Blurb Mobile for iPhone and iPod touch allows you to take photos, video and audio from the iPhone, including from apps such as Instagram, Hipstamatic and Photoshop Express, and turn them into a visual book that can be shared via email, Twitter or Facebook.

Nahtloser Musikgenuss: Seamless-App für iOS und Mac (Video)

Seamless ist eine App, die für eine gleitende Musik-Überleitung zwischen Mac und iPhone / iPod touch sorgt. An einem Ende wird der Song leiser, während er am anderen Ende synchron langsam lauter wird, so dass man von A nach B gehen kann, ohne die Musik unterbrechen zu müssen. Das Ein- und Ausblenden funktioniert via Knopfdruck einwandfrei in beide Richtungen. Der Song muss dafür sowohl auf dem Iphone wie auch auf dem Mac vorhanden sein, mit PC funktioniert die Sache leider nicht. Nanocones make solar cells more efficient, sinister looking
Going green is de rigeur, so the sun is becoming a much-preferred source of power. However, solar cells' inefficient harvesting of helical energies is a major reason they haven't usurped the power of petroleum. Good thing the big brains at Oak Ridge National Labratory are looking to change that with nanocone-based solar technology. The teeny-tiny cones are made of zinc oxide and create "an intrinsic electric field distribution" to improve electrical charge transport within solar cells. Sony promises 'phased restoration' of PlayStation Network and Qriocity starting this week
Sony made quite a few promises this morning about how it intends to deal with the fallout from the PlayStation Network outage and breach -- you can find our liveblog right here -- including improved security measures and a few token handouts of 30-day free subscriptions to PlayStation Plus and Qriocity and some free software. Lion exploration shows iCloud codenamed as Castle
A code hunt by Consomac.fr on Saturday helped confirm that iCloud would be a direct sequel to MobileMe through discovering its codename. Searching through the elements of the Find My Mac feature, the French team found account migration features that would let users "complete your upgrade" from MobileMe to Castle. The name is presumed to be just a placeholder and wasn't accompanied by any clues as to features.

Best Buy claims BlackBerry PlayBook blew past expectations
Best Buy in a mobile promo roundup has given out a clue as to early adoption rate for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The big-box retail chain said it had already had "very high" hopes based on its BlackBerry phone experience and "far exceeded" its expectations in the more than a week of initial sales. Reading List: Kommendes Feature von Safari?
Im letzten Update von Mac OS X Lion kam ein interessantes, aber verstecktes Feature zu Safari hinzu: Reading List. Reading List soll einen Service ähnlich dem von Instapaper oder Read It Later bieten - Man speichert sich längere, interessante Artikel, für die man im Moment keine Zeit hat, sie zu lesen, ab und liest sie dann später. Man speichert sich nicht wie bei manchen Konkurrenten den ganzen Artikel, sondern nur den Link dazu. Mit einem Shift-Klick auf den Link wird der Artikel der Reading List hinzugefügt. Will man diese Liste wieder öffnen, so klickt man auf das Icon einer Lesebrille neben den Lesezeichen und bekommt folgendes Fenster zu sehen: Gespeicherte Artikel lassen sich auch im Reader-Modus lesen. Rumor: Evidence for a Castle in the 'iCloud' for Lion
French blog Consomac sent us a heads-up that they've done a bit of digging in the current developer preview, searching for further evidence of the suggested Find My Mac feature in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and the fabled iCloud domain name. What they found was fascinating.
In searching through Lion's strings for references to Find My Mac, iCloud or MobileMe, they came up with the localized strings seen in the image: "Complete your Castle upgrade," and "Click OK to open System Preferences and complete your upgrade from MobileMe to Castle."

Dashboard: Irrelevant in the age of iOS or gaining new life in Lion?
The blogging crew here at TUAW headquarters frequently gets inspiration from emails that we receive from developers and hardware manufacturers. As a perfect example, the inbox the other morning contained some information about an upcoming iOS app that syncs to a Dashboard widget. Fellow blogger Erica Sadun said she wouldn't touch the app, since "Dashboard causes me to break out in hives," and Kelly Guimont asked "does anyone use the Dashboard for anything?"
That got a lively discussion going on behind the scenes about whether or not Dashboard is even relevant anymore.
