Gartner: Windows, OS X gained share by revenue in 2010

A unique breakdown of the OS market by revenue share published by Gartner on Wednesday has revealed moves up in revenue market share by Apple, Microsoft, and some Linux developers last year. Windows as expected stayed on top and gained share by its cash intake, up almost nine points to 78.6 percent and $23.85 billion dollars' worth of sales. Apple only moved up a tenth of a point to 1.7 percent total share, but the growth had it moving twice as quickly and jumping 15.8 percent to $520 million.

Rumor: Apple to release new iMacs on Tuesday, May 3

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple will release new iMac models next Tuesday, May 3. Citing "people familiar with the matter" who have "continually provided accurate information," AppleInsider states that the next iMacs will sport second-generation Intel Core i5/17 chips and a Thunderbolt port. It could not be confirmed at this time if the new iMacs will feature changes to the display sizes. FTC collecting info to investigate Google monopoly claims

The Federal Trade Commission is gathering information from technology firms for an investigation into Google's control of the search industry, possibly including in mobile, a trio of contacts claimed Saturday. Deliberately waiting on the Google-ITA deal, the agency was described as sending out civil investigative demands to unnamed companies that would legally require information. Hear that? It's a big sigh of relief from Mac users everywhere. In the latest Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Preview Developer Build, Apple has scrapped the switch/slider tabs that were borrowed UI elements from iOS. As you can see from the image above, Apple has chosen to move away from the Aqua interface of Snow Leopard (and previous versions of OS X) and moved towards a more toned-down appearance. When Lion Developer Preview 2 was released, Apple replaced aqua tabs with slider tabs. For example, in the second tab bar above, when the user clicked on "General" the white tab over "Privacy" would slide over to "General." This UI element can be found in many app settings in iOS (think of the familiar "ON/OFF" switches).

Hulu Plus update blocks iPad 2 video mirroring, users say

Today's update of Hulu Plus (to version 2.3) on the App Store brought with it the return of a missing feature, and the removal of another, angering iPad 2 owners. Plans for a renovation of the historic MacArthur Chambers in Brisbane may have revealed a forthcoming Apple Retail store, continue the company's interest in locating some "showcase" stores in historic buildings. Square tops 341,000 readers, $2 million per day

Square was known to have landed another coup on Friday after founder Jack Dorsey posted details of the company's metrics. Elan Microelectronics loses patent fight with Apple

Taiwan's Elan Microelectronics has lost a ruling with the U.S. International Trade Commission revolving around a patent dispute with Apple. Judge Paul Luckern of the U.S. trade panel found in favor of Apple against Elan's lawsuit over multi-touch technology patents, specifically one that describes a means of detecting the presence of two or more fingers on a touch-sensitive panel. The judge found in his initial decision that there had been no violation of the Elan patent.

Amazon launches 69-cent MP3 store for chart-toppers
