Flock: Sozialer Browser wird eingestellt
Wem die Integration sozialer Netzwerke und sonstiger Web 2.0-Spielereien noch nicht weit genug ging, der konnte bisher auf einen Browser setzen, der das Web 2.0-Phänomen regelrecht gelebt hat. Doch damit ist in Kürze Schluss: Flock wird zum 26. April eingestellt.

Apple, Amazon and others are named in Walker Digital patent suit
Walker Digital is using its patent library as a giant war hammer against more than 100 companies including Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook and Apple. Walker Digital is a US-based research and development firm for technology patents and holds over 400 issued and pending patents both in the US and internationally.
The company generates an estimated US$200 million in licensing revenue from these patents. Besides its robust patent portfolio, Jay Walker, founder of Walker Digital, also launched Priceline and the two companies were tied closely together at launch.

Pieceable Viewer lets devs share iOS apps, personal feelings through a browser
For developers not quite ready to offer their iOS creations in the App Store, a new service promises to suck the grunt work out of bouncing works-in-progress off others. Pieceable Viewer is the magical program in question, launching today to let devs publish a copy of their apps to a private website, whose link they can share with beta testers, clients, and fellow code monkeys. Viewer generates a single line of code for sharing and, irony of all ironies, uses Flash to simulate apps inside the browser. Intel Roadmap charts rollout dates for Ivy Bridge, Cedarview, Sandy Bridge E-series

Opera 11.10 arrives with speedier Turbo, WebP and more
Opera took its own turn at revamping its browser by launching Opera 11.10. The upgrade has a new version of its distinctive Turbo compressed browsing mode and is now about 15 percent faster than it was before. The shift comes in part both through deeper compression and the use of Google's WebP picture format, which itself is about 40 percent more efficient than usual JPEGs and similar images.

Websites now offering hack-free iPhone unlocking
Over the past few weeks several websites have popped up that allow iPhone owners to unlock their phones without a jailbreak or hack for a substantial fee.
The sites CutYourSim and Negri Electronics are advertising "permanent" iPhone unlocks, while the sites Unlockbase and GSMPhoneSource are offering "unlock" services. Prices for unlocking your iPhone range from between US$170 and $180.

Microsoft rolls out Office for Mac 2011 SP1
As promised last week, Microsoft has released Service Pack 1 for Office for Mac 2011. Changes to the suite primarily revolve around Outlook, which can now communicate with Sync Services in Mac OS X and exchange calendars, notes and tasks with other apps. Resend and Redirect buttons have also been added, and the updated software can make use of Exchange-based server-side rules.

Adobe finds another 'critical' flaw in Flash, Steve Jobs smiles smugly
Hey, guess what? Adobe has found yet another serious security flaw in Flash. Surprised? Neither are we. And we can already hear the iOS fanboys warming up their commenting fingers. Adobe says big exploit in Flash 10.2 for Android, desktops
Adobe late Monday put out a warning of a "critical" exploit in all versions of Flash 10.2. The hole would let a malicious user crash the plugin and get remote control of a device in the process. The exploit is already being used and is so far known to have been tried on Windows PCs through rogue Word files with embedded Flash files.

Acorn 3 released, adds quick masks, layer styles and more
Flying Meat introduced version 3 of its popular Acorn image editor today, adding a number of featuring including layer styles, text and live multistop gradients, rotating text and shapes, quick mask, instant alpha channels, new filters, improvements to PSD importing as well as adding PSD exporting and more. iPhone 5 due in China in October, sources allege
The iPhone 5 appears to be on track to launch in China in October, says Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. The information comes from sources at a Chinese electronics trade show, at least some of which are conflicted about when the phone's initial announcement will take place. While some suggest the normal June timeframe, others call for September.

Nokia Ovi Store tops 5m downloads per day, still lags some
Nokia celebrated itself on Tuesday by announcing that its Ovi Store is now seeing about five million downloads per day. It has grown eight-fold over the past year as Symbian-powered smartphone owners downloading the offerings from the online storefront. The milestone is significant, as the company has more than doubled the three million downloads per day it saw in November.

Auch wenn es von vielen Seiten vermutet wurde, dass Apple am heutigen Abend unserer Zeitzone die neue Version von Final Cut ankündigte und dann in Las Vegas auf der NAB zeigt, so blieb die Bestätigung bislang aus. Pieceable lets iPhone developers demo apps in a browser
Pieceable has introduced an online tool that lets iPhone developers offer a preview of their application to prospective customers. The tool, called Viewer, uses Flash to create a version of the application that can previewed using a Flash-compatible browser. Developers can easily implement this service by adding a line of Pieceable-specific code to their iPhone app and uploading their application file to Pieceable's website. Pieceable will generate a web link to your app that you can share with others. The tool only supports iPhone apps. A future version will add support for the iPad.

Intel teases 32nm Cloverview tablet processor, 22nm Ivy Bridge CPU
It hasn't even been a week since Intel rolled out Oak Trail, and it's already teasing us with yet another tablet-ready chip called Cloverview. StreamInput to universalize touch, Kinect-like cameras
Khronos today established a standard that would provide a common platform for touch and motion controls. StreamInput would be a royalty-free programming interface for not just touchscreens but haptic (vibration) feedback, motion sensors like the PlayStation Move or Wii remotes, and even depth camera systems like Microsoft's Kinect. Augmented reality apps, games, and others with advanced controls could keep every device in sync and use extensions to easily add new methods as they come about.

Opera has always been the little browser that could, and the company is now embracing that spirit more than ever with its new ad campaign for the just-released Opera 11.10. Don't hold your breath for an Apple video streaming service

I'm pretty convinced every time an analyst opens his or her mouth about Apple and we post it, a kitten is eaten by a bear somewhere*. This week's "Wacky Analyst Random Rumormongering" comes from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek who claims that Apple is about to launch "a new far reaching cloud-based service" based on video. Updated MeeGo interface gets shown off on Atom Z670-based reference tablet

Intel teases Cloverview chip for tablets, supports Android 3
Intel netbook and tablet group lead Doug Davis during a speech on Tuesday at the company's Beijing Developer Forum mentioned a follow-up processor to the Atom Z670. Called Cloverview, it would be built on the same 32 nanometer process as the Cedar Trail design for netbooks and the phone-oriented Medfield but target the in-between tablet category. Davis didn't give more details, but the shrink from 45nm in the Z670 to 32nm would reduce the size and power consumption.

Mac OS X Lion to tone down the Aqua
The Aqua interface has been a staple of Mac OS X since version 10.0, but now it appears that Apple is toning down the aqua appearance of its operating system in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. As you can see from the screen shot above, Apple has removed a lot of the aqua trimmings from drop-down menus, they've also taken the pill-shaped aqua buttons and given them a more flat, rectangular appearance.
In addition to the changes above, Lion has also stripped out OS X's aqua scroll bars and replaced them with iOS-like scroll bars which fade away when not in use. The white pill button found in the upper-right corner of a Finder or app's window, which shows or hides a window's toolbar, has also now been replace with a full screen button.

iPhone 5: Enthüllung zum alljährlichen iPod-Event im September?
Dieses Jahr könnte die Vorstellung des neuen iPhones etwas anders ablaufen, als die Jahre zuvor. Bisher wurde das neue Modell immer pünktlich im Sommer auf der WWDC vorgestellt und dann ein paar Wochen später verkauft. Diesmal wäre auch ein Start auf dem typischen iPod-Event im September denkbar.

Survey illustrates iPad's effect on PC market
A recent survey by Google-owned AdMob found many consumers are spending more time on their tablets and less time sitting at their personal computers, using their smartphones, watching television, listening to the radio, or reading paper books. The survey highlights the rapidly shifting habits of customers in a tablet market AdMob expects will reach 165 million devices over the next two years.

Harris: Motorola, HP pip Apple for best-valued tech brands
A new Harris study on Tuesday provided a rare upset for Apple as it was outranked in two categories for the best-regarded brand by users. Motorola outranked it in a large January survey of Americans, giving the Droid creator a top score of 64.4 among phone makers where Apple managed 59.3. It wasn't even second place as the study also put HTC (60.6), Sony Ericsson (59.8), and even Nokia (59.5) slightly higher.

Brazilian Apple manufacturing linked to Foxconn expansion
Apple's Brazilian plans are likely linked to an expansion by manufacturing partner Foxconn, a Reuters report suggests. Currently situated in Taiwan and China, Foxconn is "proposing a partnership" with Brazil worth $12 billion over the course of five to six years, according to the country's president, Dilma Rousseff. Senate Democrat to propose Internet sales tax
US-based buyers making purchases on the Internet may soon need to pay state tax if a democratic senator gets his way. CNET said the legislation will be made public after April 18, the tax deadline, with Dick Durbin of Illinois, heading up the so-called Main Street Fairness Act. Durbin argued that sites such as Amazon have an unfair advantage over physical and local businesses, as buyers save on taxes.

It was 50 years ago today that the son of a Russian farmer rocketed into space and became the first man to orbit the earth. Yuri Gagarin's 108 minute trip in his Vostok spacecraft ushered in the era of manned space flight, as the US followed up with the Mercury, Gemini, and later the Apollo missions to the moon. Digging through our drawers here at Engadget there is one thing we're clearly not in desperate need of: USB flash drives. We also happen to have a plethora of microSD cards in 1GB an 2GB sizes, left over from the days when picking a smartphone meant Windows Mobile or BlackBerry. Microsoft releases Office 2011 Service Pack 1
Office 2011 version 14.1 (Service Pack 1) is now available from Microsoft's website. As announced on April 6, the update includes a variety of improvements to the new Outlook for Mac, including built in support for Apple's Sync Services that allows users to more easily synchronize Outlook data with other Mac OS X software like iCal and BusyCal and devices like the iPhone and iPad through iTunes.

Urteil: Mobilfunkanbieter müssen Prepaid-Guthaben voll erstatten
Das Landgericht Kiel hat entschieden, dass Mobilfunkanbieter das Restguthaben von Prepaid-Verträgen ohne Gebühr erstatten müssen. Sie seien dazu gesetztlich verpflichtet. Daher sei es unzulässig, die damit verbundenen Aufwendungen auf den Kunden abzuwälzen, befand das Gericht (Az. 18 O 243/10). Das Urteil ist noch nicht rechtskräftig.

T-Mobile launches 4G hotspot, unlimited phone plans April 13
T-Mobile sent word that its 4G Mobile Hotspot and new smartphone plans would be ready tomorrow, April 13. The ZTE-made hotspot will supply up to 21Mbps for as many as five devices and can share its SD card slot with other devices on the network. Company claims permanent unlock service for iPhones
A company is selling what should theoretically be a "permanent" unlock of the iPhone, reports say. The firm, GSM Phone Source, is charging $180 for the unlocking service, which involves handing over an IMEI number, waiting one or two days, and then syncing with iTunes once confirmation is received. The company is quiet on details, but says that its process should work with the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4.

Gerade erst wurde es vorgestellt, da hat sich Vlad Sarov HTCs Sensation gleich mal gegriffen und auf Herz und Nieren geprüft. Das mit 1,2 GHz Dual Core Prozessor ausgestattete 4,3-Zoll Gingerbread Smartphone hat sich erwartungsgemäss zackig verhalten, einzig die neuen 3D-Animationen haben gelegentlich für ein Ruckeln gesorgt. Das Display ist mit 960 x 540 Pixeln deutlich besser aufgelöst, als die bei bisherigen Android-Phones zum Standard gewordenen 800 x 480 Pixel, und sowohl die Kamera als auch das Video Playback liefen sehr flüssig und verzögerungsfrei. Das Sensation wirkt dabei deutlich handlicher als der Vorgänger

The core company behind Priceline, Walker Digital, today sued over 100 companies in 15 patent lawsuits as a bid to profit from their work. Early iPad 2 demand 40 percent higher than iPad 1
Early demand for the iPad 2 is about 40 percent higher than early interest in the iPad 1, a new ChangeWave study suggests. Of a group of 2,000 people polled between March 14th and the 23rd this year, 28 percent indicated they were interested in getting an iPad 2 in the near future. iPhone: Unternehmen wirbt mit dauerhaftem SIM-Unlock
Ein Unternehmen namens CutYourSim sorgt momentan für Schlagzeilen, weil es für iPhone-Besitzer einen dauerhaften SIM-Unlock verspricht, der ohne einen Jailbreak funktioniert. Wie dies genau erreicht wird, ist nicht bekannt, allerdings ist das Angebot mit 169 US-Dollar pro Gerät recht preisintensiv. The makers of the Eye-Fi Wi-Fi enabled SDHC memory cards have announced a new feature today -- the ability to use Wi-Fi Direct Mode and special Eye-Fi mobile apps to transfer pictures from a digital camera to a mobile device when there's no wireless network available. This was first announced back in January, and has finally become available.
A new 8 GB Mobile X2 card with the Direct Mode enabled will be available starting on April 17 for US$79.99, and a free firmware upgrade will be available to owners of existing X2 Eye-Fi cards to add the capability.

Terminal Tip: Find out which files won't be backed up
Backing up is one of the most important things you can do on a Mac, and thankfully, it's a pretty trivial affair with Time Machine built right in. Of course, when you're looking at what needs backing up, people often overlook what doesn't need backing up (or isn't, but should be).
A good example of this would be a rented media file, like a TV show rented from iTunes. It's only valid for 48 hours, so even if you do back it up, by the time you've restored your machine after a system failure, it's unlikely to play anyway. In essence, it's wasted space.
Thankfully, OS X has a built-in system of defining what should and shouldn't be backed up using

Based on "checks with industry and supply chain sources," Apple is likely to once again beat Street consensus predictions in the March quarter, says Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu. Konzeptkamera Revolution lädt sich selbst - wenn jemand kurbelt

Carl McGreavy hat ein Kamerakonzept ausgetüftelt, mit dem die Knippse "sich selbst aufladen" kann. Was natürlich ein wenig übertrieben ist, denn irgendwer muss kurbeln bzw. schwingen, sonst bleibt der Akku leer. Um das Kurbeln am Dynamo zu erleichtern ist die Kamera allerdings so gestaltet, dass sich die schweren Bauteile auf einer Seite konzentrieren, außerdem soll das etwas großspurig Revolution genannte Gerät mit sechs Einsätzen für den Kurbelring kommen.

HTC as expected used its London event on Tuesday to unveil a new flagship Android phone, the Sensation. It packs the same dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor as the Evo 3D we tried last month as well as the 4.3-inch, 540x960 display, but with a more conventional design. Just in time for the anniversary of the Civil War, History 3D for iPad brings the past to life. If you have a pair of anaglyph 3D glasses (the red and blue kind) handy, it gets even better.

VLC- und Flash-Player mit kritischen Sicherheitslücken
Mit Vorsicht sollte man sich dieser Tage durch die Flash- und Medien-gefüllte Welt des WWW bewegen. Mobee, best known for its Magic Mouse inductive charger, has expanded its charging to cover the rest of Apple's current input hardware. The Magic Bar uses the same inductive technique to charge Apple wireless input with a barrel-shaped battery area, including the Wireless Keyboard and the Magic Trackpad. Remember back in February when the iPad 2 hadn't even launched yet, but there were already rumors of an iPad 3 set to hit the market this fall? Well, according to Digitimes, those rumors aren't likely to amount to anything this year. When iPad 3 rumors originally surfaced, the idea was thrown around that the iPad 2 may be a kind of transitional product, and the "real" iPad upgrade would appear in the fall as a kind of iPad 2.5 model. Hong Kong Apple Store locations revealed
ifoAppleStore has discovered the locations of Apple's first and second Hong Kong stores. The first location is in the International Finance Center on Hong Kong Island. The IFC comprises two towers that include office buildings, a mall, and a cinema. The Apple Store will be located in Tower 2 and span 6,300 square feet. The IFC store will be open by year's end.

Nokia E6 first hands-on!
That crazy new 326ppi device that Nokia busted out this morning has finally made contact with our eager hands. The E6 is extremely compact, stainless steel accounts for its back cover and camera bezel, but weight is feathery and general feel in the hand is terrific. You're limited to a 2.46-inch screen, but Nokia's otherwise standard resolution of 640 x 480 looks pretty awesome when squeezed into such dimensions. IDF 2011: Intel stellt Tablet-Atom Oak Trail vor

Der bereits unter dem Codenamen Oak Trail bekannte SoC kommt mit einem Atom-Kern und einem PowerVR-SGX-535-Grafikkernund soll unter den Namen Atom Z670 (mit 1,5 GHz) und in der langsameren Variante als Z650 (mit 1,2 GHz) vermarktet werden. Jeremie Francone und Laurence Nigay vom Informatik Lab in Grenoble haben eine App entwickelt, die mithilfe der internen Kamera brillenloses 3D auf dem iPad 2 ermöglicht. Dazu wird die Raumposition des Kopfes des Users von der Kamera bestimmt und daraus das Bild errechnet. Die Idee stammt von Johnny Lee, der etwas vergleichbares für die Wii programmiert hat (Apple hat auch ein vergleichbares Patent angemeldet) und ist schon ziemlich überzeugend umgesetzt, bleibt die Frage, wie gut sie unter schlechten Lichtverhältnissen funktioniert. Acer already upping tablet shipments to make up for netbooks
Acer is already optimistic enough about its Iconia Tab launches that it's increasing production, part suppliers said late Monday. Although it was conservative when it first made orders in March, Acer has supposedly bumped the order dramatically to between 500,000 and 800,000 tablets. About 400,000 to 600,000 of those would be the 10-inch A500 models where the rest would be seven-inch designs.

Amazon releases ad-supported Kindle
The ebook wars are heating up, and Amazon is doing everything it can to make sure it takes the top spot. Today the Internet giant announced that it will sell an ad-supported version of the Kindle for a price of US$114.00. Thankfully, Amazon is being rather tactful with the ads. They will not appear within the ebooks themselves but will be relegated to the Kindle home screen and screensavers. Still, the $114 price point seems a little silly; $99 would be a much better psychological buy-in point.

Component builders said late Monday that talk of an iPad 3 in the fall was wrong based on Apple's early plans. The company has reportedly provided a handful of details calling for a higher resolution display, but the details were at the "initial planning stage" and unlikely to show up at all in 2011. Werberiese Admob hat vor einigen Tagen in den USA eine Umfrage zum Thema „Benutzung von Tablets“ unter 1.430 Teilnehmern durchgeführt. Es ging nicht speziell um das iPad, dennoch sind wahrscheinlich mindestens 95% der Teilnehmer der Umfrage im Besitz eines iPads. So nutzen etwa 60% ihr Tablet öfter, als dass sie ein echtes Buch aus Papier in die Hand nehmen. Etwa die Hälfte hört weniger Radio, ~40% nutzen ihren Desktop-Computer, Laptop oder Smartphone seltener und ein Drittel vernachlässigt den Fernseher. Apple planning to assemble iPad 2s in Brazil
Apple has filed documents with authorities in São Paulo, Brazil that indicate the company will soon be assembling products -- most likely the iPad 2 -- in the city, the largest in Brazil and the sixth-largest city in the world, UOL Technology reports. Newspaper reports indicate that a formal announcement of Apple's arrival will be made on or around April 22nd. TI develops its first USB 3 four-port host controller
Texas Instruments has won certification from the USB Implementer's Forum (USB-IF) for an all-USB 3 host controller that can be incorporated into expansion cards using PCIe, ExpressCard and other implementations suitable for notebooks, servers, HDTVs, gaming consoles and other devices. The controller uses full state-machine architecture to avoid any external storage needs (such as EEPROMs or flash memory), which should lower the cost of manufacture.

JetBlue teams with ViaSat on in-flight satellite Internet
JetBlue has quietly reached a deal with ViaSat to offer what should be part of the next generation of in-flight Internet access. The two made permanent a previous memorandum of understanding that would see ViaSat provide satellite access over the fast Ka-band on all its planes. The Ka-band is claimed to be fast enough to beat a land-based system like Gogo's and would allow for "streaming movies" even while dropping the price compared to talking to cell sites on the ground.

Matrox adds Thunderbolt support to MXO2 interfaces
Matrox has announced that its MXO2 family of audio/video hardware will be able to take advantage of Intel's Thunderbolt interface on Apple's latest MacBook Pro lineup. The company is demonstrating the new capabilities this week at the NAB expo, where visitors can preview MXO2 boxes attached to 15-inch MacBook Pros running Final Cut Pro.

RCA's line of portable hybrid televisions now available
RCA announced these way back at CES, and it's now finally rolled out its new line of portable "hybrid" televisions, which are able to receive both Mobile DTV and standard digital TV signals. International iPad 2 orders shipping early [U]
[Updated to include reports from other countries] Early iPad 2 buyers outside the US are reporting that shipping times for their orders, placed on the first day of worldwide availability (March 25th) but immediately slapped with a 2-3 week delay, are now shipping and expected to arrive faster than the company had previously estimated. Nokia expects share loss pre-WP7, to intimidate with patents
Nokia in an interview [free reg. required] Monday warned that it might face market share losses in the run-up to its first Windows Phone 7 device but might also attack competitors with patents. Chairman Jorma Ollila explained that the board of directors was aware there would probably be an "expected lower market share" and that it would have to rebuild from that point. Executives were being given incentives to stay, he told the FT, although that excluded his own exit in 2012.

Report: Hong Kong to get two Apple Stores
Hong Kong's long wait for an Apple Store of its own will see not one but two stores opening over the next 12 months, both on Hong Kong Island itself, according to a report at ifoAppleStore. This will end a decade-long wait for the many Apple users there, and at least one of the locations could be a showcase store in a city already known for its vertical architectural design.

Apptwee Ri universal remote for iOS is inexpensive and tiny
With the success of all handheld iOS devices -- iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad -- it's not surprising that manufacturers want to turn them into universal remote controls. Amazon to ship ad-backed Kindle for $114 to fight Nook, iPad
Amazon up-ended the e-reader market on Monday with word of an ad-sponsored version of the Kindle. Called just the Kindle with Special Offers, it will have ads both on the bottom of the home page and on its idle screens. The new reader would drop the price by $25 over a Wi-Fi version and should ship both online and through Best Buy and Target on May 3.

Skype with video calling leaks for HTC Thunderbolt, celebrations unsurprisingly erupt

Glasses-free 3D comes to the iPad 2
Researchers in France have developed a technique for showing 3D on the screen of an iPad 2 without glasses and, more interestingly, without need of the accelerometer. The technique is based entirely on "head-tracking," or using the movements of the user's head as picked up by the front-facing camera, essentially turning the iPad's camera into a basic Kinect-type device -- which could have great implications for future 3D gaming on iOS devices with front-facing cameras, MacStories reports.

Intel said teaming with ZTE to push way into smartphones
Intel is looking to push its way into the smartphone market through a deal with ZTE, a pair of sources claimed Monday. The phone was designed by Intel and would have an Atom chip but would be made by the Chinese firm for sale within its home country. Bloomberg didn't mention hardware or OS details, but it would likely use the Medfield platform.
