Sharp's new 70-inch LCD HDTV is definitely bigger than the one your friend just bought
At its "Spectacularge" press conference today Sharp announced its new 70-inch LC-70LE732U is the largest LCD HDTV on the market . It sports Quattron four color pixels, full LED backlighting, Netflix, CinemaNow, Vudu Apps and DLNA access among its list of features, but no 3D. CDMA iPhone market could be worth up to $9 billion
CDMA iPhones could be worth up to $9 billion for Apple in 2012, says JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz. Of this about $6 billion is expected to come from Verizon, but the remaining $3 billion is forecast to come from other countries, most notably those in the Asia-Pacific region. There are currently about 564 million CDMA subscribers worldwide, of which Verizon's 95 million represents only 17 percent.

iHome ships swiveling iA63 iPhone clock radio
iHome on Wednesday shipped out the iA63 as a unique take on iPhone and iPod radio docks. The hub has a unique circular cradle that can rotate to hold the Apple device upright or in landscape mode without disrupting the design or needing a dock adapter. Logitech brings video security app to iPad
Logitech on Wednesday showed off an upcoming app for the iPad that will let users access the company's Alert digital video security system. Using the app, users will have access to the cameras on the security system in up to 720p quality from anywhere they have a data connection. It is compatible with the Alert 750i Master System and the weatherproof Alert 750e Outdoor Master System as well as add-on cameras for either.

IDC: Apple has blown past Acer in US market share
Acer's refusal to acknowledge the iPad's competition before its refocus on mobile cost it dearly in the winter, IDC said in a preliminary market share breakdown on Wednesday. The Taiwan PC builder's shipments to the US dropped a steep 42.1 percent versus a year ago to hit just 1.33 million, or 8.3 percent. Apple stayed in fourth place, but its success with the Mac and Acer's failure led it to jump from seven percent in early 2010 to 8.5 percent, or about 1.38 million Macs.

Toshiba's Wipe HDDs render data useless when you get online in a strange place
Self-encrypting drives are hardly new, but that doesn't mean researchers aren't still looking for ways to give those IT folks behind the curtain more ways to lock down sensitive intel. Toshiba just launched a line of self-encrypting HDDs that will "invalidate" the data -- essentially, rendering it useless -- when the laptop connects to an unknown host. IT departments can also use Toshiba's so-called Wipe Technology to scrub a machine before tossing it, or encrypt the drives every time someone powers down. AMD beats Intel to the punch, confirms USB 3.0 support in future chipsets
When a leaked document strongly suggests that Intel's upcoming Panther Point chipset will support USB 3.0, AMD's not going to take that cheery news lying down. Not even a day later, the underdog chip maker has confirmed that its A75 and A70M Fusion chipsets will support the standard protocol, which claims speeds ten times faster than USB 2.0. No word on when that'll happen, or whether AMD will beat Chipzilla to market -- but if nothing else it can brag about being first out of the gate with an official plan. Huzzah!

Jerry Lawson, creator of cartridge-based video game consoles, dies at 70
Gerald "Jerry" Lawson, the man who invented the video game cartridge, died Saturday morning of a heart attack at a Mountain View, California hospital at the age of 70. His brainchild, the Fairchild Channel F Video Game System, more commonly referred to as the Channel F, came out just one year before Atari's cartridge-based console, the VCS, opening the floodgates of modern gaming. IBM shows off Smarter Traveler traffic prediction tool
Traffic alerts on GPS devices may be old hat at this point, but there's obviously still plenty of room for improvement, and IBM now says it's managed to do just that with its new "Smarter Traveler" traffic prediction tool. Developed with the help of UC Berkeley's transportation group and the California Department of Transportation, the tool relies on predictive analytics software, GPS monitoring and sensors already on the roads to not only offer alerts, but build a model of each person's usual commuter route. Motorola testing seven-inch, Android 2.3-based rugged tablet
One of Motorola's first tablets after the Xoom broke cover on Wednesday in a leak of plans for a pro device. The unnamed tablet would shrink to seven inches and focus on rugged use, with MIL-810G weather sealing and IP54 waterproofing hardening it up for the field. A couple of videos from the announcement of Final Cut Pro X last night have leaked out online, and you can watch them on the next page for as long as they stick around, though I'm not sure who would have the claim on these. We've been keeping our eyes on Motorola's plans to sink its claws into the enterprise market for at least the past couple of months, and it looks like the company is ramping up its efforts with a rugged Android tablet fit for the workplace. MagicPlan app magically creates interactive floor plans
Many years ago when my wife and I were looking for the perfect house, I used to pour over the floor plans that home builders would create. While it was often difficult to translate the lines that designated the walls and doors of the house into a three-dimensional representation of what the interior actually looked like, the floor plans were helpful in at least getting an idea of how foot traffic would flow and where we could place furniture when we could afford it.
A French-Canadian development company, Sensopia, has just released an app that takes the work out of creating floor plans. RIM's BlackBerry Torch 9860 makes blurry video debut

Windows Phone 7 gets Skype, Spotify, Angry Birds, Kik, Layar
Microsoft during its MIX11 event caught up in app development in significant fashion with a handful of major Windows Phone 7 apps that will take advantage of its fall 2011 update, Mango. iPad dry erase board for sketching app designs
App designers love to sketch out designs of possible UI layouts. Over the years, we've seen stacks of iPhone and iPad templates printed out in book form to be used for drawing dream user interfaces, and now a company called UI Stencils has come out with a great way to do brainstorming of iPad displays.
They've developed an iPad Dry Erase Board (US$24.95) with the dimensions of an iPad, complete with a 20-pixel grid for helping you align UI elements in their appropriate places. It comes with black and red dry erase markers, although if you're really artistic you might want to head on over to your nearest office supply store and pick up a spectrum of colors.

New VW Bus concept comes with iPad interface
The venerable Volkswagen Bus has been remade for the next millennia and the updated version of the hippie bus is now earth-friendly and technologically savvy. A concept version of the van, now called the Bulli, was showcased by Volkswagen at the Geneva International Motor Show held in March. The van is smaller than its microbus predecessor and seats six within an interior that includes two full-length bench seats. Still more non-software iPhone unlocking techniques are beginning to emerge, according to accounts. 'Data points' hint at Apple smart TV in near future
Apple could be working on an Internet-connected "smart TV," says Ticonderoga Securities' Brian White. The analyst cites "data points" taken from a Chinese electronics trade show this week, which he suggests might even point to a product launch by the end of 2011. Apple präsentiert Final Cut Pro X
Apple hat auf einer Veranstaltung der National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in Las Vegas Final Cut Pro X vorgestellt, die neue Version seiner Videoschnittsoftware. There are any number of online file storage and backup options these days -- Amazon's new Cloud Drive, perennial favorite Dropbox and Mozy, which I've been using for simple backups. So it's good to hear that Mozy has now released an iOS client that will allow you to view your files stored on its servers.

Handoff v1.1 – prompte Weblink-Weitergabe
Version 1.0 von Handoff, der Webbrowser-Funktionserweiterung, die Links mit nur einem Klick an iPhone und iPad pusht, erschien erst vor wenigen Wochen. Was hier auf dem Screenshot fast wie ein fairer Kampf aussieht, ist dann doch eher mitleiderregend anzuschauen im Video, denn dieser automatische Punching Ball / Sandsack-Bot rudert zwar kräftig mit den Armen, kann aber nie einen Treffer landen, bekommt immer wieder eins auf die Mütze und kann einem fast leidtun. The set of nine plug-ins can align stereoscopic videos, reduce ghosting and adjust parallax, among other options. As widely rumored, Apple's Peter Steinauer took the stage at the Supermeet during NAB in Las Vegas to introduce the latest version of Final Cut, Final Cut X. The new app suite (last revised in July of 2009) adds full 64-bit compatibility with a full rewrite of the platform.

Researchers use GPS, accelerometers to boost smartphone data rates
Well, this might be a good reason for The Powers That Be to know your exact whereabouts. According to a team of MIT researchers, speeding up data rates on mobile devices could be as easy as tapping the various motion sensors found in run-of-the-mill smartphones. The scientists believe our wireless infrastructure is at the root of bottlenecks, with a handful of weak transmitters clumsily "handing off" data to one another as you move out of range. The solution: use GPS radios, accelerometers, and even gyroscopes to infer where you're headed, and then choose an access point near where you're likely to end up. 40% higher demand for the iPad 2 vs original iPad
RBC Capital Markets released a survey today in which they asked 2000 people how likely they were to buy an iPad 2. 28% of respondents are either "very likely" or "somewhat likely." That's a whopping 40% more potential buyers than the respondents of a similar survey released after the first iPad came out. In that survey only 20% of respondents said they were "very likely" or "somewhat likely" to buy the original iPad.
Another interesting finding from the survey is that the prime choice of Wi-Fi iPad models have shifted. With the original survey the most popular iPad Wi-Fi model was the 16 GB one, followed by the 32 GB model, and finally the 64 GB model. G-Technology shows off new drives, Thunderbolt at NAB
G-Technology, known for making stylish, reliable hard drives aimed at the A/V and pro Mac communities, will be debuting new products and officially embracing Thunderbolt technology at this year's NAB conference. Offerings include a ruggedized, shock-resistant portable drive coming in June, and new additions to their existing line of standalone and RAID drives with capacities of up to 3TB using Hitachi's Deskstar and Ultrastar drives.

NewTek brings AirPlay support to TriCaster interface
NewTek has announced that its latest TriCaster production gear, the 850 Extreme, now allows users to work with audio and video from any AirPlay-enabled device. The support enables the equipment to simultaneously connect with two AirPlay sources, including the iPad, iPod touch, iPhone and a variety of Macs.

MacTech Boot Camp revving up for Dallas, coming to Boston, LA, and Chicago later this year
Our friends at the MacTech Boot Camp series of conferences for Mac consultants and IT techs are rolling right into 2011. They've got a session planned in Dallas for April 27, and then they're headed up to Boston for another event on May 18.

Chumby 8 gets reviewed, dubbed 'best and biggest Chumby yet'
The Chumby has never exactly been a device for everyone, and that's not likely to change with the new Chumby 8 that's recently started shipping. Those that do want a Chumby, however, aren't likely to be disappointed by the new 8-inch model. Reuters reports that Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant that produces iPods, iPhones and iPads in China, is in ongoing talks to invest US $12 billion in building manufacturing facilities in Brazil.

T-Mobile's new plans get official: starting at $60 for unlimited everything, throttling included
T-Mobile's just gone official with the new unlimited plans we caught wind of a few days ago, and while they are truly unlimited by numbers, they're not completely unlimited in functionality. For $59.99 (plus $5 surcharge for BlackBerry users, or $20 surcharge if contracts aren't your thing), you'll get unlimited data, domestic calling, and domestic messaging. Acorn 3 debuts, adds layer styles, quick mask, more

Cisco to shutter Flip camera line
Cisco has announced that it's shutting down the Flip video camera line, purchased a few years ago from Pure Digital for a whopping $590 million, for good. That's a shame -- while of course the iPod nano and the iPhone (and now the iPad 2) have carried video cameras of varying quality for a little while now, I really liked using my Flip minoHD, and often used it to shoot a few quick HD videos to edit in iMovie or elsewhere. Intel roadmap shows sped up Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge
An uncovered roadmap in the midst of Intel's Developer Forum in Beijing has revealed plans from Intel to speed up its current desktop processors from the Sandy Bridge platform as well as some early details of its Ivy Bridge successor.
