News360 joins the iOS news party with some interesting features
I've commented that news reading apps for iOS are surging, especially, it seems, as more big news brands put content behind paywalls.
As a pretty dedicated news junkie I'm delighting in all the creative apps that are scouring the web for worthwhile morsels of news, and serving it all up in a dedicated place. I've already praised Zite, which looks at half a million websites and delivers news that it determines you are interested in by keeping track of what you click on.
I've spent a couple days now using News360, from Russian developers whose specialty has been semantic

Kno confirms taking $30m from Intel, going multi-platform
Kno removed doubts on Friday and confirmed it was taking an investment from Intel that would effectively see it get out of direct competition in tablets. A $30 million investment from venture capital groups, $20 million of would come directly from Intel Capital, will see the two work on getting Kno's educational software on to Intel's educational hardware platforms, like the ClassMate line. Intel gets control of licensing for Kno's tablet design and will let other companies build slates based on the 14-inch single- or dual-screen hardware.

US DoJ approves Google's acquisition of ITA, but not without stipulations
The United States government may be dissolved tomorrow, but it's certainly taking care of one final piece of business before going into shutdown: this. If you'll recall, Google announced its intentions to acquire ITA for $700 million in July of last year, and as we cruise into the start of America's summer travel season, all signals are go. Apple blocks PopCap app Unpleasant Horse over mature content
Apple has reportedly rejected the first app released by PopCap's new game label, 4th & Battery. The app, titled Unpleasant Horse, features a dark horse that flies through the sky. Users advance in the game by eliminating birds or blasting other horses into a meat grinder. Apple is said to have blocked the release due to mature content.

Verizon Wireless killing one-year contracts on April 17th, assumes you won't even care
Okay, so maybe you'll care, but you'll still opt for the two-year option once your contract is up. That's according -- more or less, anyway -- to a Verizon Wireless spokesperson, confirming to our inquiry this afternoon that the carrier's one-year contract option will be eliminated on April 17th. The reason, as you might expect, revolves around historical customer preference. I first previewed Anomaly: Warzone Earth back in January, and then saw the iOS version at GDC. It's an excellent real-time strategy game, kind of a reverse tower defense, where you need to escort a military convoy through an area full of enemy towers. Star Trek series coming to Netflix Watch Instantly in July and October?
Just because Netflix has licensed new content we're not always sure when it will be available for Watch Instantly streaming, but TrekMovie.com reports it has the dates for Star Trek content covered by a recent deal with CBS. House of Representatives votes to block FCC's net neutrality rules
Well, it looks like Republicans in the House of Representatives weren't about to let this one slip past a possible government shutdown -- they just passed a measure that seeks to block the FCC's net neutrality rules by a largely party line vote of 240 to 179. That follows a House subcommittee vote last month but, as then, it still faces an uphill battle in the Senate and with the President, who's expected to veto any such legislation if it somehow got to his desk.

Google to roll Hotpot into Places as common feature
Google on Friday was happy enough with the state of its Hotpot location recommendation service to make it a permanent staple of Google Places. The once experimental feature will now be subsumed into the place pages on the web and in mobile apps. Uniting the two should have a practical benefit by simplifying the link between the basic place information and how the places have been reviewed.

Motorola has now confirmed that the latest round of prices the Carphone Warehouse, PC World and other UK retailers are listing for its Xoom tablet are indeed the officially sanctioned price points for the Honeycomb slate. Wozniak willing to consider return to Apple
Steve Wozniak says he would "consider" going back to work at Apple if he was asked, according to Reuters. Wozniak helped found Apple in 1976 with the help of Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and was responsible for building the Apple I and the Apple II. Purported Verizon screenshot points to LTE-upgradable 16GB Motorola Xoom
The Motorola Xoom might be starting to look a bit pricey compared to some of its new competitors, but it seems that the company may have a solution in the offing. A wide selection of refurbished Macs are currently available for $949 or less, the lowest priced item being only $749 for a Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server, a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM and dual 500GB hard drives. QuickPick update in limbo for Lion similarities
On Wednesday, QuickPick 2.0.3 was apparently ejected from the Mac App Store, according to a tweet from developer Seth Willits. A day later, Seth tweeted that the app is still in the store -- as of this writing that's the case -- but update 2.0.3 had been rejected, increasing his confusion. Additionally, he mentions that an Apple rep told him that QuickPick would be "removed from sale," citing a "confusingly similar" argument. For now, the app is in limbo.

ChevronWP7 updater pulled, places phones into 'non-serviceable state' of mind
We've had our phones in a number of states (Vermont is particularly lovely), but stopping by a "non-serviceable state" isn't exactly high on our list. Sadly, every user of ChevronWP7 may have unwittingly paid a visit to this place, that tool being pulled offline after Microsoft contacted its developer. Vudu hints movies may hit iPad or iPhone, other tablets
Vudu chief Ed Lichty in a talk on Friday expressed hope that his movie streaming service might come to Apple devices. AdMob: 28% of tablet users depend on it as main computer
Google's mobile ad firm AdMob in one of its rare post-buyout studies has revealed surprisingly rapid uptake of tablets. About 28 percent of those asked who had a tablet, most likely an iPad, were using it as their main computer. It was also taking over even from pre-PC activities, as 59 percent used it more than a book, 52 percent more than the radio, and 34 percent used it more than they watched TV.

'Pattern of activity' suggests iPhone 5 in summer
The iPhone 5 is still on track for a normal June or July release date, an analyst suggests. Ticonderoga Securities' Brian White explains that while there is no "smoking gun" pointing one way or another, there is a "pattern of activity in motion with the supply chain that makes us question a delayed launch." Apple keeping iPhone 5 suppliers mum about launch date
In a research note, Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities suggests Apple is being extra secretive with its Asian suppliers when ordering parts for the iPhone 5 and is still quietly preparing the next generation handset for a June or July launch. White writes, "Although we do not have a smoking gun that definitively rules out a delayed autumn unveiling or one that supports a launch this summer, there is a pattern of activity in motion with the supply chain that makes us question a delayed launch."

Apple hält offenbar an weißem iPhone 4 fest
Apple hat derzeit umlaufende Gerüchte über das endgültige für das iPhone 4 in Weiß auf Anfrage von ZDNet nicht ausdrücklich dementiert. Verizon may carry 16GB Motorola Xoom to tackle iPad
Verizon may have a response to criticisms that it priced the Motorola Xoom out of contention with the iPad 2 if an internal leak pans out. Kompromittierter US-Provider Epsilon war vorgewarnt
Die Marketingfirma Epsilon, die Ende vergangener Woche Daten Dutzender Kunden verloren hat, ist schon vor Monaten vor Angriffen gewarnt worden. Im November hatte ihr Technologiepartner Return Path darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass Tausende E-Mail-Adressen von seinem System gestohlen worden waren, nachdem ein Angestellter auf eine Phishing-Mail geklickt hatte. Epsilon nutzt das Monitoring-System von Return Path in seinen E-Mail-Marketing-Diensten, die es anderen Unternehmen zur Verfügung stellt.

House passes bill protecting Apple, others from lithium batteries classification
The House approved legislation that would prevent the U.S. from enacting a proposed rule limiting lithium-ion battery shipments by treating them as hazardous materials. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) along with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) support a rule that would control the handling and shipment of lithium-ion batteries in the United States.
The rule would cost companies including Apple an initial $1.3 billion to comply with the new packaging, training and handling requirements designed to limit overheating and potential explosion of these batteries while in transit. Oscium: Oszilloskop macht iOS-Geräte wirklich nerdig

Zugegebenermaßen ist diese App ein bisschen nischig, aber für Soundfetischisten wie uns dennoch dennoch sehr spannend. Oscium ist ein vollwertiges Oszilloskop für iOS-Geräte (ab 3.1.3). Neben der App, die ab jetzt im App Store erhältlich ist, gibt es den passenden Mehrkanal-Hardware-Adapter für knapp 300 Dollar (umgerechnet 208 Euro). Eine Anschaffung, die einen gewissen Analyse-Enthusiasmus also schon noch erfordert. Die Hardware soll ab dem 29. April erhältlich sein.

Rentnerin bestreitet Internetkabel-Diebstahl

Verizon iPad 2s experiencing 3G connection woes
Some Verizon models of the iPad 2 are suffering from 3G connection issues, complaints on Apple's support forums indicate. Affected tablets are unable to properly connect to the Verizon network, and may display "Searching," "Roaming" or simply "iPad" in place of the expected carrier identifier. Several solutions have been proposed for solving the trouble, at least temporarily; these include rebooting, keeping 3G on (or else using Airplane mode), or even restoring an iPad as a new device in iTunes.

Cheap iPad 2 Smart Cover clone falls apart
A discovery late Thursday of a cheap copy of the iPad 2's Smart Cover has served as a possible warning for those shopping for clones. The unnamed Chinese make was found to be much more cheaply made than the official design and virtually ineffective at its job. Although MIC Gadget's example could wake and sleep the iPad, the shoddy construction was such that the hinge completely detached from the cover and would likely have led to a broken iPad if the owner wasn't holding the iPad underneath.

BlackBerry Torch 2 gets an early hands-on
We'd already heard that the BlackBerry Torch 2 would basically be a Torch with some significantly bumped specs, and that's now been all but confirmed by BGR, which managed to spend a bit of time with the device itself. iPad 2s are indeed being withheld by Best Buy, the retailer tells MacNN. "Best Buy continues to receive iPad 2 inventory from Apple on a regular basis," a statement issued by a PR manager explains. Russia's FSB threatens to block Gmail, Hotmail, Skype
The lead for the FSB security agency's information group Alexander Andreyechkin on Friday proposed banning Gmail, Hotmail, and Skype in Russia. He complained that the brunt of the traffic on these sites wasn't managed within Russia and allegedly made them a haven for 'extremist' groups. Sony accelerates Memory Stick's rate of obsolescence to 50MBps
Only Sony -- the company behind the "Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity" streaming service -- would consider naming its latest flash memory card the "Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX." But once you get past its monumental moniker you'll notice that the 32GB (¥17,000 about $200), 16GB (¥9,000 or $106), and 8GB (¥5,000 / $59) MS-HXB series memory cards boast an impressive 50MB per second transfer rate as tested by Sony. i4i-Prozess: Microsoft fordert neue Sicht auf Patente
Im Patentstreit gegen das kanadische Unternehmen i4i hat Microsoft einen Schriftsatz eingereicht, der eine neue Einstellung gegenüber Patenten fordert. Microsoft will dafür aber keine "klaren und überzeugenden Beweise" vorlegen müssen, wie von i4i verlangt. Confusion reigns over Best Buy iPad 2 sales
At least some Best Buy stores are holding back stock of the iPad 2, according to reports. One source claims that the retail chain has had all stock except for demonstration units pulled. Another initially explained that Apple was upset with an alleged Best Buy policy, in which customers would be told there were no iPad 2s in stock when in reality a store had just reached a daily quota. Apple COO Tim Cook was said to be directly involved in resolving the situation, information supposedly backed by an Apple representative at a Best Buy outlet.

Damit der sich wehren kann gibt es mit Witness endlich eine Überwachungs-App, die die integrierte Webcam nutzt und wie bei solchen Programmen üblich als Bewegungssensor funktioniert. Die dazugehörige App sendet dann Notifications ans iPhone und schon wieder hat man die Hauskatze dabei erwischt wie sie sich unerlaubt ins Internet kuschelt. Für 39 Euro nicht gerade billig und ein Userreview meint, die Notifications funktionieren nicht ganz richtig, was das ganze eher unnütz erscheinen lässt.

Nintendo 3DS struggling in Japan, outsold by PSP
Nintendo may have seen some early trouble with the Nintendo 3DS as new weekly data from sales tracking at Media Create showed it being outsold by the Sony PSP in Japan. The roughly six-year-old PSP saw a sharp 7,000 unit increase last week and hit 58,075 units. Nintendo's system dropped by roughly 8,000 to hit 42,979, leaving a wide gap.

Clorox ditches BlackBerry, 92 percent of employees replace it with iPhone
According to Computerworld, Clorox CIO Ralph Loura recently realized that the company's workers were no longer satisfied with their corporate-issued BlackBerry phones. Loura decided to ditch BlackBerry as a platform and gave 2000 employees three choices for replacements: an iPhone, a phone running Android or a phone running Windows Phone 7. A full 92 percent of employees chose an iPhone, 6 percent picked an Android phone, and a tiny 2 percent (40 employees out of 2000) chose Windows Phone 7 as their platform of choice.

MyVoice: App lässt Stumme durch iPhone sprechen

Keine Frage, wer Stumm ist spricht natürlich in Gebärdensprache, kann meist auch noch Lippenlesen und ist ansonsten durchaus fähig ohne App durchs Leben zu kommen. Falls man aber doch mal auf die Schnelle ein paar Wörter in gesprochener Sprache braucht ist MyVoice mit Sicherheit ganz nützlich. Die App von der Universität Toronto entwickelt, kann vorprogrammierte Satzbausteine plappern, lässt natürlich Text-To-Speech zu und ist mit eigenen vorgefertigten Sätzen konfigurierbar. Bericht: USA wollen Terrorwarnungen über Facebook und Twitter senden
Das amerikanische Department of Homeland Security (DHS; Ministerium für Heimatschutz) will laut einem Bericht von Associated Press Terrorwarnungen gegebenenfalls über Soziale Netzwerke wie Twitter oder Facebook verbreiten. Damit die Meldungen auch verstanden werden, reduziert die Behörde angeblich ihr berüchtigtes Fünf-Farben-System für terroristische Bedrohungen zu einem zweistufigen. AP will diese vorläufigen Pläne aus einem vertraulichen Dokument des Heimatschutzministeriums erfahren haben. Die Änderungen sollen am 27. April in Kraft treten.

Motorola XOOM 100.000 mal verkauft in zwei Monaten

Die Deutsche Bank hat es ausgerechnet. Und der sollten wir theoretisch halbwegs vertrauen können. Das Motorola XOOM hat sich innerhalb der ersten zwei Monate ca. 100.000 Mal verkauft. Ein Achtungserfolg oder Komplettmisere? Das wollen wir erst mal nicht beurteilen. Aber da Zahlen immer schwer zu bekommen sind wenigstens ein Anhaltspunkt. Weltweit macht sich das XOOM bislang ja leider eher rar. Zum Vergleich: Das iPad 2 ist laut Zulieferern der Touchscreens in der ersten Woche 2,4 bis 2,6 Millionen Mal verkauft worden (in 25 Ländern). Wenn mehr lieferbar gewesen wären, wäre vermutlich auch mehr drin gewesen.

Laut einer Umfrage des Marktforschungsinstituts Forsa im Auftrag des Bitkom verwenden 79 Prozent der Bundesbürger täglich einen Computer. Condition ONE app combines iPad and photo journalism
Traditional photo journalism has always had a limited point of view. You could only see what was in front of the camera. Video photo journalism added a new dimension to reporting as the camera could pan around an area giving the user views from multiple vantage points. However, with both photo and video journalism, viewers have no control over what they see in the shot. War documentarian Danfung Dennis is on the brink of changing this thanks to a custom camera system and the iPad. The former is a new tool for the photo journalist to record events and the latter is a tool for the viewer to immerse themselves in that event and control what they see. Samsung erwartet Gewinneinbruch im ersten Quartal
Samsung hat eine Prognose für das erste Fiskalquartal 2011 veröffentlicht. Der koreanische Elektronikkonzern rechnet mit einem operativen Gewinn zwischen 2,7 und 3,1 Billionen Won (1,7 bis 2 Milliarden Euro). Doom 2 gets ported to PocketBook 360 Plus e-reader (video)
Porting Doom to unexpected devices may be one of the oldest tricks in the game-porting book, but seeing it (or Doom 2, no less) run in a somewhat playable fashion on an e-reader is still a feat worth noting. Intel takes control of Kno tablets, software turns to iPad
A late-breaking leak has backed suspicions that Kno was exiting hardware. Intel Capital and Advance Publications is reportedly investing $30 million in a funding round that would see it take control of Kno tablets while leaving the core Kno team to focus on software. AMD said hiring to add Android support, no threat to iPad
A slip detailing Computex show launch plans may have given away AMD's plans to get into Android in earnest. Industry contacts claimed AMD has been recruiting engineers to write Android drivers. Best Buy pulls ad that makes fun of iPad
Best Buy has quickly pulled an ad that mocked the iPad, according to SlashGear. The ad, which debuted on April 4th, showed the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer tablet plus optional keyboard next to what appears to be an iPad duct taped to a keyboard. Considering the iPad 2 is in all likelihood going to be the hottest tablet of the year by a long shot, one would think it obvious that it's probably not a good idea to make fun of it -- especially when you sell it. Then again, Best Buy is the same company who tries to sell PC "optimization" packages to gullible consumers.

Federal prosecutors in New Jersey are investigating a number of smartphone application developers who may illegally be obtaining -- and distributing to third-party advertisers -- personal information, The Wall Street Journal reports. NVIDIA readying budget GeForce GT 520
NVIDIA is preparing at least one last GeForce 500 series graphics chip for the desktop to give it a true entry-level option. Chinese site Zol has identified the GT 520, which will use a new core known as the GF119 with all the feature set of the current architecture but 48 processing cores and a modest 64-bit memory bus. Apple updates Boot Camp for current MacBook Pro only
The "Early 2011" model MacBook Pros have received a specialized update of Boot Camp, version 3.2, aimed specifically at them. The fix addresses issues with shutting down in Windows 7, along with an issue involving Japanese and Korean keyboards on that model MacBook Pro. The update is 21.55MB in size, and applies only to Windows 7 installs.

Oscium debuts iMSO app, hardware for iOS oscilloscope
Using a Cypress Semiconductor PSoC system-on-chip motherboard, equipment maker Oscium has unveiled the iMSO-104, a device the company calls the world's smallest and most portable oscilloscope. Pandora mobile app found to be sending birth date, gender and location information to ad servers
We still haven't heard much more about that Federal Grand Jury investigation into Pandora and other mobile apps over privacy concerns, but an independent security firm has now gone ahead and taken matters into its own hands. According to an analysis done by the folks at Veracode, Pandora does indeed seem to be sharing more information about you then it lets on. Analyst: Apple hoarding majority of touchscreen supplies
Reaffirming earlier reports, ThinkEquity analyst Rajesh Ghai suggests Apple has established a tight grip on component supplies. The company is said to have reserved the majority of touchscreen supplies, reducing the probability of iPad 2 shipping delays. The analyst did suggest, however, that Apple may be facing an "unspectacular" second quarter.

3Frames brings animated GIF creation to the iPhone
Animated GIFs, the bane of many flashy websites circa the mid-to-late '90s, have made a comeback thanks to resurging popularity on places such as Tumblr. Jumping on the revival bandwagon is 3Frames, a $2.99 app that lets you use your iPhone or iPod touch to create animated gifs.
The app features a "burst mode," similar to what sports photographers use to capture rapid action, that will let you catch several frames of footage quickly. In fact, you can grab up to ten shots in a row very easily, which can make for some pretty interesting animated gif compositions. Edit the footage using the in-app editor and unleash it on the world via Twitter, Facebook or Tumblr.

FCC mandates data roaming after 3-2 vote, AT&T and Verizon aren't too happy about it
Good news for small cellular carriers, and bad news for big ones today -- the Federal Communications Commission has decided to mandate data roaming by a 3-2 vote. Simply put, major carriers like AT&T and Verizon will be required to let you check your email and perform VoIP calls over their federally-licensed airwaves even if you're actually paying a regional carrier for your cellular coverage instead -- just as they've been required to do for voice and messaging since 2007. Apple patents idea for smart bezel touch area
Here's an intriguing patent highlighted by the patent-following folks at Patently Apple -- it's an idea Apple has registered for a "smart bezel," which would be a part of the touchscreen that worked as a separate display only when you're using that part. In other words, if you just needed to adjust the volume or answer a call on your iPhone, only that part of the display would light up and become useable. This could enable things like developers hooking in to an "official" gaming controls layout, or just certain tools in parts of the screen layout, like music controls or phone controls in certain states.

MyVoice app for iOS and Android enables the mute to talk (video)
Talking is something most of us take for granted, but a new app called MyVoice -- currently available for iOS and coming soon to Android -- is attempting to give the ability back to those who aren't as fortunate. Developed by a group of University of Toronto students after being approached by a man who had a stroke, the location-based app allows users to "speak" pre-programmed text macros using text-to-speech. You can't add new phrases from within the app just yet, though for now there's an online portal that also allows relatives to configure strings and organize them into "places" for the ultimate user. We checked out the app and it seems to work as advertised -- there's a pretty extensive word pack that comes with it.
