Time Warner Cable wants court to clear iPad for Viacom TV
Time Warner Cable on Thursday launched a preemptive strike against Viacom in hopes of getting a legal right to broadcast the network's shows through its iPad app. The motion for a declaratory judgment asked a Southern District of New York court to say that the TWCable TV app was within TWC's broadcast rights. Viacom had threatened legal action but would be barred from any measure if a judgment came in TWC's favor.

Time Warner goes to court over iPad streaming app
And they're off! I thought it was weird that Time Warner was pushing so hard to get streaming cable channels on their new iPad app, but apparently it's ready to back up that stance. The company has just dropped a request for a declaratory judgment on a US District Court, asking the courts to rule on whether it can or can't show cable subscription channels on the iPad. Oscium's iMSO-104 turns iPad, iPhone into mixed signal oscilloscopes
We've seen oscilloscopes repurposed as clocks and MAME machines, but we hardly ever see the pendulum swing in the opposite direction. The iMSO-104, however, actually turns your iPad, iPhone, or iPad touch into an oscilloscope display. Lenovo: tablets to reach 18% of PCs, Android 3.0 on LePad
Lenovo COO Rory Read in an interview Thursday was optimistic for tablets. He predicted slates like the LePad would have 15 to 18 percent of the computer market in the next five years. Netbooks were on their way out, he argued to Forbes, in part because the category was being swallowed up as the computers got larger or faster.

ESPN launches Watch ESPN app that lets you do just that
ESPN is one of those big media producers that has done well on the App Store -- not only has the company released a number of successful apps for its various properties, but the content sells well on iTunes also. Now, the company is actually sending content directly to your iOS device.

Time Warner Cable takes Viacom to court over its TWCable TV iPad app
While there's been a lot of talk about whether or not Time Warner has the right to include feeds of cable channels it carries in the new TWCable TV app, besides the company's voluntary removal of several networks there's been very little action until now. Time Warner Cable announced this afternoon it has filed a request in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York for a declaratory judgement regarding Viacom's cable networks. OWC ships 2.5-inch drive sleds for 2009, 2010 Mac Pros
Other World Computing has launched a new drive sled for Mac Pros, the Mount Pro 2.5". The gear works with notebook-sized SATA hard disks or SSDs, and fits 2009 and 2010 Pros with model IDs 4,1 or 5,1. The brackets are made of powder-coated aircraft-grade aluminum, and are visually identifiable from the Pro's 3.5-inch sleds because of blue coloring. The Mount Pro allows direct connection to a motherboard's SATA port and uses an open design for better airflow.

The Hasbro My3D is out, but the AP says stick with 2D for now
The Associated Press has gotten a hands-on look at the Hasbro My3D, the 3D-goggle accessory for the iPhone that the toy company originally announced in November.
The final price of the device is $35, but as AP points out, it's more of a curiosity rather than a device someone will use for the long run -- much like its predecessors, the stereoscope and the View-Master. Toshiba intros Camileo P100 and B10 pocket camcorders, strays from tried-and-true pistol grip
The seasons come and go, but Toshiba's line of Camileo pocket camcorders tend to look the same, with their pistol grips and flip-out screens. But now, Tosh is getting ready to ship two new models in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and one of them, at least, takes the company's design in a different direction. Fujifilm rumored making X200 high-end compact
A rumor surfacing from a business-to-business conversation suggested Fujifilm is hoping to expand its semi-pro line from the X100 to include at least one other model. Photography supplier Bob Todrick was reportedly told Fujifilm has decided to chase the "serious prosumer market" and would start with an X200 in the fall. The new model would be a simplified, point-and-shoot version of the X100. If it and the X100 did well, there could be an interchangeable lens camera sometime in 2012, Todrick said.

Wozniak to give MSU commencement, receive degree
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is scheduled to give the commencement speech at Michigan State University this spring. As noted by the Detroit Free Press, Wozniak will share duties with TIAA-CREF president and CEO Roger Ferguson Jr.; Wozniak will take the stage May 6th at 1PM for the undergraduate ceremony, and Ferguson will be present at the 7PM advanced degree ceremony. The undergraduate event will take place at Michigan State's Breslin Center, located on campus at Kalamazoo Street and Harrison Avenue.

Gartner says Microsoft will surpass Apple in mobile by 2015
That's the prediction from analysts at Gartner today. In a new report, Gartner's experts say the Microsoft-Nokia partnership will give Windows the number 2 spot in 2015, with a 20 percent market share after the Android OS grabs 48.8 percent of the smartphone market. Gartner predicts Apple will have a 17.2 percent share by 2015, just behind Microsoft, but will remain a solid number 2 in the worldwide market through 2014. IDC had a similar prediction last month.

Eine Quelle aus Apple-Kreisen teilte mit, dass bereits in den nächsten zwei Wochen ein neues iOS-Update veröffentlicht wird.Neben den üblichen kleinen Verbesserungen, Sicherheitsproblemen und Bugs sollen auch Batterieprobleme behoben werden. Clorox drops BlackBerry for iPhone, Android at work
Clorox in a speech at the SNW conference revealed that the company has almost entirely dropped the BlackBerry as a company phone for work. The bleach maker scrapped RIM to let users choose between Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone 7 devices. Apple was the winner as about 92 percent of staff chose an iPhone where six percent were Android and two percent were Windows Phone 7.

Apple rumored to be considering LCD/E Ink hybrid
Apple recently filed a patent application titled "Systems and Methods for Switching Between an Electronic Paper Display and a Video Display," which describes a hybrid display technology capable of dynamically switching from a standard color LCD to black and white E Ink. The display would be controlled by the operating system and display switching would be done on the fly. Droid X2 reappears in the wild, still indistinguishable from Droid X

Proposed patent would put indicators, buttons on bezels
Future iOS handhelds could see indicators or touch-sensitive buttons built into their bezels, a newly-published Apple patent application hints. Titled Electronic Devices with a Primary Display and a Selectively Illuminated Secondary Display, the document proposes embedding a secondary display -- such as a "printed segmented electroluminescence display" -- which could be used to guide people around the main interface. Apple's touch panel demand helped delay RIMs Playbook
RIM announced its PlayBook tablet last year and eager BlackBerry fans have been waiting months for this QNX-based tablet to debut. According to a rumor from Digitimes, this wait was made even longer thanks to Apple and its stranglehold on the touch panel market. FCC votes to require AT&T, Verizon make data roaming deals
The FCC on Thursday held its promised vote on data roaming at a monthly meeting. It voted 3-2 along party lines with Democrat agency officials in favor and the two Republicans repeating their support of corporate interests through objections. The deal will require that large carriers have to strike data roaming deals with smaller carriers on reasonable terms.

US Homeland Security Department planning to use Facebook, Twitter for terrorism alerts
It looks like we finally know what the US Department of Homeland Security plans to use instead of the now infamous color-coded terrorism alert system. According to a draft document obtained by the Associated Press, the department's new system will simply have two levels of alerts -- "elevated" and "imminent" -- and it seems those warnings will even be published online using Facebook and Twitter "when appropriate." There's no word as to exactly how those alerts will be published, however, or any indication that the two companies have actually committed to aiding the department in any way, for that matter. Apple is becoming aggressive when it comes to securing components for its products, says Ticonderoga Securities' Brian White. The analyst claims, for instance, that following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the company immediately sent executives to suppliers to guarantee a steady flow of parts. Bing search engine arrives on iPad
Machines that go 'Bing!' now include your iPad.
Microsoft's search tool has surfaced in the iOS App Store, and a first look at Bing for iPad (free) shows it to be a solid and well-designed competitor to Google and the parade of news, weather, and search apps that have appeared for Apple's tablet in the last year. The app has been available for iPhone and iPod touch for quite a while and is now in version 2.1.

Hoppla. Das hat zwar lange gedauert aber Atari bringt jetzt mit Atari Greatest Hits satte 100 Spiele der Arcade und Atari 2600 Zeit auf das iPad. In der Umsonstversion nur mit Pong, den Rest kann man als einzelne Packs dazukaufen, manche haben auch Bluetooth-Multiplayer Funktionen und für Retro Gamer ist das alles definitiv ein Muss. Sprint may nab LightSquared, Clearwire 4G deals in a month
Credit Suisse analyst Jonathan Chaplin claimed on Thursday that Sprint would have its deal with LightSquared and a new deal with Clearwire could be ready in weeks. Gartner: Knapp 50 Prozent Marktanteil für Android bis 2012
Gartner hat heute eine neue Prognose über die Zukunft von Smartphone-Betriebssystemen abgegeben. Apple planning Moscow, Russia Apple Store
Apple may be moving forward with plans to expand its retail arm into Russia. According to ifoAppleStore, Apple Senior Vice President of Retail Ron Johnson and Vice President of Real Estate Bob Bridger visited Moscow recently and toured the newly renovated Hotel Moskva located in the heart of downtown Moscow. The former Hotel is in the final stages of reconstruction and will be the future home of the Four Seasons Hotel and other retail establishments.

Airpiano: Touchloser Geistercontroller jetzt erhältlich

Das AirPiano (hier schon vor längerem mal vorgestellt) ist eine Art thereminartiger Midi-Controller der im Gegensatz zu seinem analogen Vorläufer allerdings 24 luftige Tasten und 8 Fader hat mit denen man durch Bewegungen über dem "Piano" alles mögliche via OSC und MIDI ansteuern kann. Wie man im Video nach dem Break sehen kann, eignet sich das vor allem für etwas esoterischere Musik, Rammstein können wir uns damit nur schwer vorstellen. Einige Jahre gab es das Airpiano nur als Prototyp, jetzt aber kann man ihn auch kaufen. Der stolze Preis für eure innere Elfe: 1099 Euro.

Apple patent would lead to hybrid e-paper, LCD displays
A US patent discovered Thursday suggested Apple has been developing a possible breakthrough in display technology for future iPads and iPhones. Its "Systems and Methods for Switching Between an Electronic Paper Display and a Video Display" would not only put e-paper and regular display technology in the same screen but would use elements of both on the spot. Google's plans to support Chrome OS tablets were more tightly defined Thursday after discoveries showed touch elements having arrived in just the past few weeks. The browser now reports itself as "CrOS Touch" for sites that have specific touchscreen elements. Samsung warned Thursday that its operating profit for winter 2011 would drop at least 42 percent compared to a year ago. When a tablet version of Chrome OS was teased back in February of last year, we found it a legitimately exciting proposition. Now that we have Android's Honeycomb iteration designed specifically for slates, however, we're having to wonder just why Google's still chasing that keyboard-less dream with its web-centric OS. Gartner sees Android at 49% smartphone share by 2015
Gartner on Thursday chipped in a long-term prediction of its own for smartphone share that gave Android nearly half of the market. It expected Google to jump to 38.5 percent of the market this year to reach 48.8 percent in 2015, or 539.3 million phones. The company would be riding the back of an open OS wave where the devices were "democratized" and would cost $300 or less off-contract, principal analyst Roberta Cozza said.

Samsung refutes talk of Galaxy S II delays, promises April launch in at least some places

Bloomberg: HTCs Marktwert übersteigt den von Nokia
HTC, nach Samsung Asiens zweitgrößter Smartphone-Hersteller, hat Nokias Marktwert übertroffen. HTCs Aktien schossen an der Börse in Taipeh gestern um 5,3 Prozent in die Höhe, wie Bloomberg berichtet. Samsung Galaxy S II wird schneller, kommt später

GSM Arena meldet, dass das Galaxy S II von Samsung mit einer schnelleren Taktrate auf den Markt kommen wird, als bisher geplant. Konkret geht es aktuell um 1,2GHz, ursprünglich waren lediglich 1GHz vorgesehen. Auch wenn der Tegra-2-Prozessor der gleiche bleiben wird, ist durch die neue Taktung auch mit einer verspäteten Auslieferung des Android-Samrtphones zu rechnen. Microsoft hat die HD-Videokonferenzlösung Team 220 des zum Logitech-Konzern gehörenden Unternehmens LifeSize für den Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007 R2 zertifiziert. Das Konferenzraum-Videosystem lässt sich somit über den Office Communicator mit jedem Windows-Desktop-Rechner verbinden. Bereits 2008 beantragte Apple ein Patent auf einen neuen Dock Connector, der Schnittstelle also, die bis heute bei den iPods, dem iPhone und iPad zum Einsatz kommt, wenn es um die Kommunikation mit dem Rechner geht. Mobile Musik-Downloads nehmen wieder zu
Nachdem 2009 die mobilen Musik-Downloads in der Gunst der Nutzer verloren, konnte der Umsatz mit ihnen im vergangenen Jahr wieder deutlich gesteigert werden. Intel stellt neue Prozessoren vor
Intel hat diese Woche neue Prozessoren-Typen vorgestellt — Mögliche Apple-Produkte, die diese Prozessoren bald verbaut haben könnten sind der Mac Pro und das MacBook Air. Der neue Xeon E7 hat 10 Cores und jeder dieser Cores ist dank Intels Hyperthreading-Technologie Dual-Thread fähig, dass heisst es können gleichzeitig 20 Threads bearbeitet werden — dies bei einer Taktfrequenz von 2.13 bis 2.67 GHz pro Core. Der E7 wird im 32nm-Verfahren produziert, ist bis zu 40% schneller als der Vorgänger «Xeon 7500» und hat zudem noch einen geringeren Energieverbrauch. Der Chip ist ganz klar für Server und sonstige High-Performance-Systeme gedacht — ob eine Variante dieses 700 bis 4600 US-Dollar teuren Prozessors auch seinen Weg in den Mac Pro findet, bleibt abzuwarten.

Leaks: Apple shipped at least 2.4m iPad 2s in March alone
Apple may have had very aggressive launch shipments of the iPad 2 despite the shortages, part suppliers said Wednesday. About 2.4 million to 2.6 million of the tablets are believed to have shipped just in March. Toyota sells one million Prii in US alone
Thank you Toyota, for teaching us the plural of Prius, because somehow, "Toyota sells one million Priuples" just doesn't jive. That's right, the Japanese automaker announced Wednesday that it has officially sold its one millionth Prius on American soil. It's reportedly also reached a couple of other sales milestones in the last six months, with worldwide Prius sales reaching two million in October and overall Toyota hybrid sales exceeding three million in March. Is Android forked? Give Amazon a chance
For such a seemingly simple concept, "open" sure is a contentious term these days.
I've previously written at length on TUAW about the topic of Android's openness and, semi-relatedly, the GNU Public Licence. Second Apple retail store for Utah, job listings reveal
Though about half of Apple's planned 2011 Apple Store openings will happen outside the United States, a new domestic listing has been confirmed via job postings. Murray, Utah -- a bedroom community south of Salt Lake City -- will get the second Apple Retail store in the state, about eight miles south of the first one in Salt Lake City, ifoAppleStore reports. Google's Rubin denies attempts to force anti-fragmentation
Google VP of Engineering and Android lead Andy Rubin in a post late Wednesday vocally denied claims that his company was cracking down on fragmentation in the mobile OS. He insisted Google didn't "believe in a 'one size fits all' solution" and that phone or tablet designers were still free to customize much of the OS. Hardware partners thought of quality and consistency as "top priorities" and, supposedly, anti-fragmentation policies had been in place since the Open Handset Alliance and Android were kicked off in 2007.

Social sharing on The Daily dropping fast
The Nieman Journalism Lab reports that social sharing from iPad news app The Daily is falling precipitously, according to data from a firm called PostRank. Social sharing is when users share content on networks like Twitter or Facebook; the average number of pieces shared from The Daily on Twitter has fallen from over 200 to under 50 in just the past few months since its launch.

Apple hat vorhin ganze 12 Petabytes, etwa 12,5 Millionen Gigabytes oder 12.288 Terabytes, Speicher bestellt, angeblich für Video-Inhalte für iTunes. Dass man dafür so viel Speicher braucht ist unwahrscheinlich, auch wenn die Qualtiätt aller Filme auf 1080p verbessert wird. Viel wahrscheinlicher ist, dass der Speicher für Apple’s Serverfarm in North Carolina ist, wo momentan Gerüchten zufolge die Infrastruktur für ein erweitertes MobileMe. Auch könnte dort ein Soziales Netzwerk von Apple aufgebaut werden, wie Funde in iOS 4.3-Beta-Software bereits andeuteten oder ein größerer Cloud-Service, um seine Musik und Filme zu speichern und unterwegs zu streamen.

Apple may have inadvertently contributed to a month-long delay for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Touchscreen panel builders said late Wednesday that Apple had booked so much touchscreen production for devices like the iPad that it had triggered a shortage and made it hard for RIM to get supplies. Apple suit against eForCity can proceed, judge rules
Apple's patent infringement suit against iDevice accessory maker eForCity Corporation and six other related companies may proceed, a federal district judge has ruled. Apple is charging the parent company with producing iOS accessories that illegally used patented parts, and made products of "inferior quality and reliability, raising significant concerns over compatibility with and damage to Appleís products," as well as claiming to be a participant in the company's "Made for iPod" program when they were not, reports Bloomberg.

Telus to roll out LTE-based 4G in early 2012
Telus on Wednesday became the next major Canadian carrier to detail its plans for LTE-based 4G. The provider planned to start deploying the network in the second half of this year with an expectation that it would go live in early 2012. The timing would put it just behind Rogers, which hopes to have active service by the end of 2011.

App developers could face US privacy investigation

Lion's iChat adds web page sharing to iChat Theater
The upcoming iChat 6, part of Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion") not only extends compatibility to Yahoo instant messaging, but also adds the ability to share a web page in iChat Theater, AppleInsider has found. Other details have also emerged, such as the ability to manually set different statuses for different accounts (or set the same status for all accounts), and the new iChat's ability to consolidate the accounts of various services.

Lieferanten: 2,5 Millionen iPad 2s im März verkauft
Obwohl Apple bei der Produktion mit Knappheiten von unter anderem der Batterie zu kämpfen hat, scheint der Verkauf sehr gut zu laufen. So wurden Lieferanten zufolge etwa zwischen 2,4 und 2,6 Millionen iPad 2s im März versendet, also etwa 1 Gerät pro Sekunde. Zum Vergleich: Das erste iPad war nach 4 Wochen bei 1 Millionen verkauften Geräten. Natürlich spielte beim neuen iPad auch der frühe internationale Verkaufsstart eine wichtige Rolle. Samsung überarbeitet Galaxy-S-II-SoC
Ursprünglich sollte der auf dem Mobile World Congress im Februar präsentierte Nachfolger des Samsung Galaxy S bereits in gut drei Wochen erhältlich sein.
