Hylas 1 completes testing phase, Europe's first broadband satellite to start serving customers next week
It hasn't exactly been all that long since Avanti Communications' Hylas 1 satellite blasted off at the end of November, but it's now almost ready to start spreading some wireless broadband across 16 countries in Europe. Avanti just announced today that the satellite's in-orbit testing phase and been a "complete success," and that it will go into service sometime next week with an initial test group of customers, before beginning a broader transition on April 4th. All told, over 60 operators have signed up to offer the satellite broadband service to customers, which promises to offer connections

Kindle, Netflix updates go through despite iOS rules
Apple showed possible leniency on its in-app subscription and in-app purchase rules on Tuesday by allowing through new versions of the Amazon Kindle (free, App Store) and Netflix (free, App Store) iPhone and iPad apps. Despite Apple's rules banning links to outside purchasing systems and requiring the official iTunes in-app system when an outside one exists, the Kindle 2.6.1 app still takes users to the web-based Kindle Store. Netflix' 1.2 update also still hsa its existing set and lets users subscribe to the service on the web without also having an iTunes option.

Sparrow chirps out feature list for version 1.1
Several of the bloggers here at TUAW, including myself, are big fans of Sparrow. It's a very Twitter-like Mac email app that is fast, feature filled, and has a clean user interface -- and doesn't have a Quick Bar. Today the Sparrow team announced that Sparrow 1.1 will be submitted to the Mac App Store within a few days, and that the app should be available by the end of March.
The big change for Sparrow is that the new version will support most IMAP accounts, not just Gmail IMAP accounts. Any MobileMe, Yahoo, or AOL account can now be added to Spar

Apple highlights AirPlay-capable apps on App Store
Apple is now actively promoting AirPlay-capable apps on the App Store. A section in the storefront groups together titles that exploit the recently-enhanced streaming feature, which pushes content to an Apple TV. Some titles central to the promotion include Air Video, which streams non-native media like AVI and MKV files, and Discovery Channel HD, an iPad app that offers access to clips from Discovery TV. Foremost, though, is Apple's own iMovie editing tool.

Verizon offers unlimited LTE data plan for HTC Thunderbolt, don't expect it to stick around
Verizon execs have been clear as crystal that unlimited smartphone data will follow the dodo, perhaps as soon as summer of this year, but in the meanwhile you can drink your fill of the best, as the HTC Thunderbolt will launch with a $30 unlimited LTE data plan. Google revamps iPhone mobile app as Google Search
Google on Tuesday completely reworked its core mobile app for iPhone and iPod owners. Now rebadged as Google Search (free, App Store, the app focuses on a new toolbar allows much more control over the results. Fix for Apple TV screen flickering issue said to be on the way
One thing leads to another. First we get a slew of reports of screen flickering from folks using an HDMI to DVI adapter with their Apple TV, and now an Apple rep has confirmed on Apple's support forms that the company is indeed "aware of this issue and working on a fix." No more details than that at the moment, but it seems like you can rest assured that Apple won't be leaving you behind just because your TV doesn't have an HDMI port.

iOS 4.3 update triggers graphics glitches on iPod touches
Some iPod touch owners have been suffering graphic glitches since the introduction of the iOS 4.3 update, talk on Apple's support forums reveals, backed up experiences at MacNN. Affected people will see "snowy," corrupted and/or blinking graphics appear in the iOS interface. Making the bug especially odd is that it only affects some portions of the interface, such as status icons and pop-up notifications. It is also inconsistent, showing at some times but not others.

ScreenFloat, a great productivity booster for Mac
ScreenFloat, now available on the Mac App Store, is a small utility that does one simple thing: float screenshots above all your other windows. Seems silly at first, right? It's not. I've been beta testing this app for over a year, and every time I open it I'm amazed at how useful this functionality is.
Take, for example, InDesign. There's plenty of data that can't be quickly copied and pasted into a document, and InDesign tends to obscure everything but what you're working on with its interface elements. Nachdem Apple seit Sonntag die Möglichkeit zum Spenden für die Opfer der Naturkatastrophen in Japan im US-iTunes-Store anbietet, gibt es diese Möglichkeit nun auch im deutschen Store. Somit ist es auch deutschen Kunden nun möglich, Hilfe zu leisten.

Yahoo! fixes iPhone IMAP data leak
Earlier this year, a report surfaced that suggested Yahoo! Mail was the cause of spurious data usage by Windows Phone and iPhone owners. The root cause was the Yahoo IMAP mail servers which were transmitting more data than was necessary for each email request. Occasional email checking was not problematic, but individuals who checked their email frequently could easily accrue enough data to push them over their plan's limit. Yahoo! confirmed this problem, told affected users to check email manually and promised to work on a solution.
A month after this discovery, Yahoo! has reportedly pushed out an update that fixes this issue. Rafael Rivera, who initially identified the culprit as Yahoo! Mail, now reports that Yahoo! sends

Time Warner's TV streaming app for iPad now available
The Time Warner iPad app previewed just yesterday has now gone live (free, App Store). The app promises the ability of watching TV in the home over Wi-Fi, as long as users are a Time Warner Cable subscriber. Only selected live cable TV channels are supported, including Bravo, Animal Planet, The Food Network, BET, AMC, A&E, CNBC, BBC America, Discovery, E! News and 20 more in HD.

Not interested in having yourself automatically identified in photos across the internet? Then you might want to take a cue from Adam Ant (or Blade Runner's Pris, if you prefer), as Adam Harvey, a student in NYU's Interactive Telecommunication Program, has discovered that some over the top face makeup applied in just the right way can thwart most facial recognition software. Dwolla Spots location-based payment app arrives tomorrow
There has been a lot of talk of future iPhones using Near Field Communications (NFC) for payments, but if Dwolla has their way, Apple won't need to add that capability to upcoming hardware.
On Wednesday, March 16, Dwolla Spots will be added to the App Store. As seen in the video accompanying this post, the app provides a list of locations near you that take Dwolla payments. When you arrive at a location, you simply enter your PIN number and the amount you want to pay to the merchant, and you're done. A receipt is sent to you, and the merchant receives notification of the payment.

Lexar now shipping 128GB and 64GB SDXC cards from the future straight to your door
One of the great many announcements of CES 2011 was Lexar's new pair of Class 10 SDXC memory cards, one sized at 64GB and the other touting a spectacular 128GB capacity. New iPad 2 lines appear at NYC, San Francisco Apple Stores
Lineups for the iPad 2 once again formed today at stores in New York City and San Francisco, notes Ticonderoga Securities' Brian White. The analyst claims however that in both cities, checks with shops indicated that resupplies were much lower than the quantities originally available on Friday. Apple takes 4 percent of US digital video market, Netflix reigns
The NPD Group crowned Netflix the heavyweight champion of digital, video-on-demand services in a statement released earlier today. Between January, 2011, and February, 2011, Netflix accounted for 61% of all movies downloaded or streamed over the internet or offered on-demand through a cable or satellite television service.

RoboTouch brings a wired NES controller to a wireless iPad (video)
Oh Arduino, is there anything you can't do when put in the right hands? The hands in this case belong to a guy named Joven of ProtoDojo, and they whipped up the contraption you can see in the video below. Microsoft manager gives non-denial on Zune's exit
Microsoft Zune business development manager Dave McLauchlan issued a non-committal response to rumors of the Zune being killed off. He urged "healthy skepticism" of the rumors but stopped short of promising that there would be would be future hardware. Report: RIM didn't 'get' iPhone, Kik suit scaring off coders
A new in-depth look into RIM (PDF) has revealed some of the insight into RIM's past and current struggles to compete with Apple. An anonymous former worker at the BlackBerry maker said it didn't understand the appeal of the iPhone. If the results of benchmarks run by Tim Chaten at AppAdvice are any indication, anyone looking for a good, fast iMovie workstation for doing editing in the field should take a close look at the app running on an iPad 2.
Chaten wanted to see how iMovie for iOS running on the dual-core A5 iPad 2 would stack up to the Mac OS X edition of the app running on a variety of Macs, so he took a set of files to an Apple Store to run three tests on all of the stock Macs in the store with the exception of the Mac mini. Confirmed: FaceTime for iPad 2 works with video out
This morning, fellow TUAW blogger Erica Sadun and I both played with the video out features of the new iPad 2. While Erica discovered that something is preventing her iPad 2 from working properly with the video mirroring function that is supposed to work with all of the various video adapters (HDMI, Composite, Component, and VGA) for the device, I was able to get mirroring of everything on my iPad just by plugging in the VGA Adapter. TiPB's Rene Ritchie verified that video mirroring was plug and play for him with all of the adapters as well.
While that means a lot for all of us who demonstrate apps on the iPad, it means even more for people who use

Apple, PayPal sued by Cordance for one-click shopping
Cordance late Monday sued Apple, PayPal and Victoria's Secret for allegedly copying its technology with one-click shopping. The Delaware-based complaint, made with the help of the previously unknown "exclusive licensee" and likely shell company Efficient Online Purchasing, accused the trio of violating a patent for an "object-based on-line transaction infrastructure." Apple was singled out for supposedly having infringed on purpose, although it wasn't said how or if the two companies had contact.

Japanische Fabriken von Texas Instruments durch Erdbeben beschädigt
Texas Instruments (TI) Fertigungsanlagen im japanischen Miho sind laut einer Pressemitteilung bei dem Erdbeben am Freitag ernsthaft beschädigt worden. Die Produktion in dem Werk rund 64 Kilometer nordwestlich von Tokio steht derzeit. TI will sie schrittweise wieder aufnehmen: Einige Fertigungslinien sollen im Mai wieder anlaufen, die volle Kapazität werde Mitte Juli erreicht. Damit könne man ab September wieder sicher liefern.

EU will bis 2019 Recyclingquote von 65 Prozent bei Elektroschrott
Die Umweltminister der 27 EU-Staaten haben sich auf strengere Auflagen zur Entsorgung von Elektroschrott geeinigt. Künftig sollen deutlich mehr alte Elektrogeräte wiederverwertet werden als bisher. Die Sammelquote wollen die Minister in zwei Schritten erhöhen: In vier Jahren sollen 45 Prozent des Elektroschrotts recycelt werden, in acht Jahren 65 Prozent. Derzeit werden nur etwa 30 Prozent der Elektrogeräte wiederverwertet.

Seagate on Tuesday morning put out four pro drives targeted at both enterprise users and serious users, including a near record-setting SSD. The Pulsar.2 is billed as the first SSD using multi-level cell (MLC) in business and uses the denser storage to boost capacity, but without reducing its lifespan. iOS 4.3: Web-Apps als Symbol langsamer und ohne wichtige HTML5-Funktionen
Wie The Register heraus gefunden hat, werden Web-Apps in iOS 4.3 deutlich langsamer ausgeführt, wenn sie als Symbol gestartet werden. Der direkte Aufruf in Safari Mobile führt dagegen zu keinen Geschwindigkeitseinschränkungen. Dies deutet darauf hin, dass in iOS 4.3 zwei unterschiedliche WebKit-Engines zum Einsatz kommen. Qik on Tuesday brought its iPhone video app up to speed with the impending launch of Qik Video Connect. NVIDIA pushed its second-generation Fermi graphics architecture further into the budget realm on Tuesday through the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. Gray-market dealers swoop in on iPad 2 sales
Many of the iPad 2s sold since Friday's launch have been bought by gray-market dealers planning to resell overseas, Fortune reports. Quantities could be significant, as staff at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York City, for instance, estimate that as many as half of the iPads sold there on Friday were bought for foreign markets. A report from Bloomberg claims the Redmond Company has stopped producing new models of the Zune player due to weak sales and even weaker demand. No, not those MiniDiscs. The ones we're talking about, created by researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, are much, much smaller -- less than 300 nanometers across. Could the iPad 2 replace traditional video game consoles?
The iPad 2's new hardware and its popularity has led to speculation that tablet devices will soon replace consoles. Rovio Mobile's Peter Vesterbacka is the most vocal champion of this position and recently claimed during a South by Southwest panel that console games are "dying." Egg vs. Chicken is another interesting title that I heard about at GDC the other week. It's a game created by PlayFirst, which is another one of those companies with a huge PC back library of casual games. Google is nearing a trial of an NFC (near field communication) wireless payment system of its own, tipsters claimed Tuesday. Adobe Flash suffers from ìcriticalî new Zero-Day hack
Adobe has published another security advisory after the discovery of a ìcritical vulnerabilityî in Adobe Flash Player 10.2.152.33 and earlier versions across all major platforms including Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Solaris and Android mobile devices. According to Adobe, the Zero-Day exploit is being deployed in the wild in ìtargeted attacksî through a Flash (.swf) file embedded in a Microsoft Excel file delivered as an email attachment. Adobe reports that it is ìfinalizing a fix for the issue,î but does not expect to have the hole patched until the ìweek of March 21.

I've recently sold off my iPad 1 on the used market in favor of getting the iPad 2. Prior to selling it, I applied the iOS 4.3 update and performed a full backup on the device using iTunes. And so to my question:
Will I be able to perform a restore by use of my [iPad 1, iOS 4.3] backup onto my new iPad 2 in order to smoothly get all my settings and apps up and running on the new device?

Adobe finds 'critical' security hole in Flash Player, won't fix it before next week

Adobe's kicked out a security bulletin for users of its Flash Player on "all platforms" -- that'll be the entire population of the internet, then -- warning them that a new critical vulnerability has been discovered that may cause crashes and potentially permit the hijacking of systems. The issue also affects the company's Reader and Acrobat software products. Even better news is that Adobe has found it's being actively exploited "in the wild" via a .swf file embedded in an Excel spreadsheet, but a fix won't be forthcoming until the beginning of next week. Well, the news just keeps getting worse for those hoping to get their hands on the hottest device on the planet. A check of Apple's Online Store reveals that iPad 2 ship times for new orders have slipped to 4-5 weeks for most models. This is the third major push back in new order shipping times since the iPad went on sale on March 11.

Am Freitag-Abend um 17 Uhr war es so weit: das iPad 2 kam in den USA in den Handel. Wie man es sich seit längerem bei Apple gewohnt ist bildeten sich bereits im Vorfeld lange Schlangen wartender Menschen vor den US Apple Stores. Der Launch, so ein Apple Pressesprecher, war ‘amazing’. Zwar hat Apple bis dato noch keine konkreten Verkaufszahlen veröffentlicht, aber diverse Analysten gehen von 300’000 bis zu einer Million verkaufter iPads am ersten Wochenende aus. Letztes Jahr, als das erste iPad auf den Markt kam, konnte Apple während dem ersten Wochenende 300’000 Stück absetzen.
Wer das iPad 2 via Apple Online Store erwerben möchte, muss sich gedulden: Apple hat die Lieferzeit mittlerweile auf vier bis fünf Wochen angepasst. Auch letztes Jahr kam es zu dieser Situation — daraufhin wurde der internationale Start des Apple Tablets nach hinten verschoben. Earlier today, Kevin Rose published a set of emails he's received that really shine a light on how far Apple has gone to help out those in need during the aftermath of the Tohoku earthquake. Time Warner Cable iPad app lets subscribers view live TV

Do you subscribe to both cable and internet service from Time Warner Cable? If so, there's an iPad app you're going to want to install as soon as possible.
On March 15, Time Warner Cable's new iPad app will become available, and it is the first app of its kind to give subscribers the opportunity to view live video on their iPads. Sure, Netflix and Hulu apps let you watch TV, but none of the content is live.

Chitika online tracking agency reaches settlement with FTC
As part of a new push to regulate and enforce opt-out policies among web advertising companies and the tracking of web users, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reached a settlement with advertising firm Chitika Incorporated over a "bug" in their software that resumed tracking users who had opted-out of their program after 10 days, The Wall Street Journal reports. The company claims it intended the opt-out to last for 10 years, but was unaware of the problem until the FTC pointed it out last month.

iPad 2 already installed in Ford F-150 truck
It's been a while since we've seen an iDevice embedded in a vehicle, but the wait was worth it -- the guys at SoundMan Car Audio have placed a brand new iPad 2 in the dashboard of a new Ford truck, and it's pretty glorious. You can see the whole process after the break -- they set up the dashboard first, and then after bringing home the iPad itself, slide it in and install the whole thing.
It's pretty groovy. They can browse Maps, of course, do a FaceTime call (one hopes that they don't try it in motion), and even run Pandora straight from the iPad. There's a dock connector hooked up to the car for charging while driving, and while it doesn't seem like they have

Internet Explorer 9 launches tonight, we've got your early look

Apple now seeding eighth beta of 10.6.7
Just a week after the previous build, Apple is now seeding an eighth beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 to developers, labelled build 10J869. As with several of the previous builds, no specific issues are listed in the release notes, just (again) asking developers to focus on the Mac App Store (introduced in 10.6.6), Bonjour, SMB, Safari and graphics drivers. Apple has been releasing betas of 10.6.7 on a roughly weekly basis since mid-January.

Zen Viewer, great-looking document management for iPad
Zen Viewer is a relatively new app available on iTunes right now which offers a fresh take on document filing, viewing and sharing on the iPad. It works with a host of online services, provides many options for file upload and download, and looks great, too. Right now, it's a buck (US$0.99), so it's worth a look.

Bon Jovi claims Steve Jobs 'killed' the music business
Jon Bon Jovi in an interview with The Times' Sunday magazine pinned an alleged devolution of music on Apple's Steve Jobs. A move to digital music spearheaded by iTunes has all but ended the "magical" music experience the rocker grew up with, including the surprise of discovering unknown music at a physical store and listening to a full album without distractions. Rumor: Apple Stores (probably not) opening early tomorrow
There's a rumor flying around that Apple is opening a few retail stores early tomorrow, with brand new shipments of iPad 2s ready to go out the door, but before you grab your wallet and set your alarm, not so fast. TUAW did a quick survey of retail stores near our various houses, and none of the stores we called had any plans to open early tomorrow or have any iPad 2s in stock. You're of course welcome to call your own Apple Store and see what they tell you, but it seems unlikely that this is an official retail move.
