Video of the yeast-and-sugar powered generator in action: experience the power of boring
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
Remember that yeast-and-sugar-powered generator from Dr. Cedrick Ngalande of Malawi we spotted a while back? Ol' Ced's back with a video of the system in action -- and an explanation of how it works, to boot. Just as most of you guessed, the system is powered by the yeast / sugar mix giving off CO2, leading to a pressure imbalance which tips the center of gravity and causes motion. What most of you didn't guess, however, is how freaking slowly that would happen -- check out the video after the break, and then wake up and wipe th

iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak goes live

Those of you torn between having an SNES emulator and vibrating icons need worry no more -- a team of iPhone hackers led by the illustrious Nate True has just posted an iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak. There are some hacker politics between the iPhone Dev Team and Nate involved, and the jailbreak is currently only for Windows users with previously-jailbroken 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 iPhones, but it's still sweet, sweet freedom. We're busy getting it up on one of our iPhones here at Engadget HQ, we'll

EazzzY USB stick camera concept, for taking pretend pictures
Filed under: Digital Cameras
Our mediocre efforts at "photography" are bad enough with a full-on viewfinder, so we shudder to think what might come out at the other end of a session with this here artsy EazzzY USB camera stick concept -- which is exactly why we're so interested. Designed by Sungwoo Park and featured over on Yanko Design, EazzzY probably hasn't a chance at ever making it to market, but we can imagine quite a few hipster types that'd jump at the chance to do some shooting-from-the-hip with this colorful thing. And that's really what matters.

WPD is the real win here, allowing you to use Windows Media Player, Winamp or whatever other popular app you prefer for managing your media. The iTunes features are a bit more untested, but theoretically should work. To get you Zune to cooperate, there's a simple unlock hack to perform, but after that it should

Meizu M8 hits the Chinese patent office, top of the irony meter

Given the Meizu M8's not-so-faint resemblance to another semi-famous handheld, you'd think trying to get a patent on the design would be fairly fruitless -- but it looks like the company's giving it a shot anyway. This Chinese patent app was apparently filed last February, but China's patent office just published it on the 16th, so we're not even certain which bad render, doctored photo, or

Samsung Silencio vacuum looks like that Master Chief guy
Filed under: Gaming, Household
It takes a lot to differentiate a given vacuum cleaner in today's high-tech world of Dysons and Roombas, so kudos to Samsung for attempting to appeal to the gaming crowd by designing a model shaped like a popular Xbox character. The Silencio SC9540 packs in all the high-end features you'd expect from a TV manufacturer making vacuums -- cyclonic suction, HEPA filter, super-special silver nanoparticle coating -- yet really stands out due to its rather striking resemblance to that dude from the Halo games. FDA-commissioned study says we don't know much about wireless risks

The FDA wanted to know where to concentrate research efforts in order to better understand wireless safety, and it looks like there are quite a few gaps in the research: the study says there needs to be further study on the effects of

Once rigged up, the wearer can have someone listen in on conversation in a room while also receiving input from said listener. Sometimes Sony just confuses the hell out of us. It's rare to ever see the electronics behemoth share a humble moment (did you see their self-aggrandizing CES press conference this year?), which is partly why it's so strange that Sony's SVP for Corporate Communications, Rick Clancy, took a long, wistful, and wholly uncharacteristic look at the many similarities between Apple and itself -- only managing to reach some missed-message middle-ground in between reminiscences of heritages of innovation and some clueless-seeming sense of supposed mutual admiration. Our eyes may still be slightly out of focus from the complete lack of sleep obtained while at CES, but the two Inventec UMPCs purportedly going by 7-A / 5-D sure look a heck of a lot different than the model we peeked in Vegas. As you can glean from the image above, the UMPC 7-A sports a nifty slider design that supposedly places the QWERTY keyboard at a "more natural angle" for the user. As for the so-called UMPC 5-D (shown after the jump), it ditches the aforementioned

Nevertheless, a finalized version of Desktop 6.2 for Vista has finally been loosed (half a year after the beta was revealed, mind you), and even though it does play nice wi

Researchers craft new testing device to detect early Alzheimer's

We've heard that the "gold standard" pen and paper test seems to work fairly well at detecting the earliest stage of Alzheimer's disease, but gurus from Georgia Tech and Emory University have teamed up to develop a much quicker method for accomplishing the same. The ten-minute DETECT test utilizes a head-worn visor with a built-in LCD, headphones and a handheld controller, which the patient interacts with as he / she is put through a series of visual and auditory tests that "assess cognitive abilities relative to age," gauge reaction time and measure memory capabilities. Initial tests have purportedly shown it to have "similar accuracy" to the aforementioned pen and paper test (w

Nokia closing German plant, slashing up to 2,300 jobs
Filed under: CellphonesDespite some encouraging financials out of Espoo as of late, Nokia is looking to cut costs and slim down in its effort to keep its paws firmly around the coveted title of number one cellphone manufacturer in the world. Its Bochum, Germany plant bears the brunt of this round of belt tightening, which will be closed by mid-2008; all told, a total of 2,300 jobs may be cut in the process. Nokia is smack in the middle of migrating some of its production capabilities to cheaper countries, with a Romanian plant -- which costs one-tenth

iPhone / iPod touch updates
The iPhone 1000 SMS limit is now lifted! Huzzah!
You can now "pre-type" with two thumbs on v1.1.3 now (i.e. type, type, lift thumb, lift thumb -- instead of the usual type, lift, type lift, which is a big slow-down). Thanks Dan L.
Gmail IMAP is now officially supported! Thanks, Niall.
iPod touch can still geolocate, but using Skyhook only (since, naturally, it doesn't have cell tower access like the iPhone + Google).

So while the iPhone and Apple TV got shiny new firmware updates and new features for free today, iPod touch owners will have to lay out $20 to get Mail, Weather, Stocks, Notes, and Maps -- five apps the iPhone's had since day one. That seems like a raw deal to us -- but then again, we're up to our necks in handheld devices that can check email and take notes. So what's it going to be, iPod touch

Axiotron Modbook tablet Mac hands-on
Live from the heart-pounding, pulse-racing showfloor of Macworld 2008, we bring you a full frontal hands-on of Axiotron's long-awaited Modbook -- the MacBook tablet conversion. After all the waiting and wondering, we're not totally blown away by the end result, though if you're an artist or designer, this could be a real boon to your productivity. The build is sturdy, and the screen feels solid beneath your stylus (stylus only that is -- no touchscreen here), though the pressure sensitivity seemed to give out at really soft touches of which there were many. Check the gallery and see for yourself.

StreamMyGame streams PC games to your PS3

The battle lines between PC and console gamers just got a little blurrier -- a new app called StreamMyGame allows any Windows or Linux box (including the PS3) to stream Windows games over your LAN. It's not the most complicated tech in the world -- it sure sounds like optimized VNC to us -- but the PS3 compatibility is certainly interesting, in a complicated, installing Linux sort of way. Downloads appear to be free right now, and pretty much any game is compatible -- but we can't help but wonder why you wouldn't just play at your gaming PC in the first place.[Via DigitalSpy]

If the information is confirmed, it could signal the release of a new model of the handset, or maybe a business model, redesigned to be more flexible!

The latest OSX 10.5.2 update seed brings RAW support for Nikon's D300 and D3
This is big news for all the Nikon lovers out there: we got conformation that the latest OSX 10.5.2 update build seeded to developers brings RAW support for RAW pictures taken by Nikon's D300 and D3 cameras.
We know that some people have jumped on these cameras, especially the D300, as soon as they were out, only to get stuck when they were using Aperture: the software wouldn't display their images (although it would import them). And since RAW support is a system-wide feature, it means that 10.5.2 will bring support for D3 and D300 RAW files in Aperture, iPhoto, the Finder and all the other apps that use Apple's graphic libraries for displaying RAW files.

Even with posting best quarter ever, with the highest revenue and earnings in Apples history, Apple share value went massively down yesterday. We are not really following stock market as we concentrate of Apple-branded products and software; but many readers were questioning how this could impact the future of the Apple-logo company:
- The Apple share is becoming a highly speculative value and variation are consequently going quickly up and down, without really correlating with the true value of the company, its portfolio, sales and pipeline; especially considering the current stock market environment in USA and all over the world.
- The potential risk of recession is USA makes some analysts thinking that consumers will reduce or delay purchase of non-essential products, and potentially in first line electronic devices such as iPod or iPhone, and in less extend computers.

MacBook Air USB Port Is under Steroid
Source : http://www.electronista.comAs a possible BTO with the MacBook Air, Apple offers an USB external DVD burner. This peripheral can NOT be used on other hardware, and this has nothing to do with some proprietary policies, but simply with power requirement.
An optical drive drains a lot of energy, and especially CD and DVD burners when the laser beam is light on for long minutes at full power. The UJ-857 often found in Apple notebook officially requires 1.5A (and the reality is probably beyond).
It is a lot, and much too much for a single USB port (0.5A usually at most). So Apple decided to boost the power capacity available from the single MacBook Air USB port to make it compatible with the external SuperDrive. In addition, the MacBook Air could also be able to power any external 2.5" HD without the requirement of a dedicated power supply for the peripherals.

Jailbreak of 1.1.3 iPhone firmware is ready
The team working on the iPhone have succeeded in finding a flaw that allows jailbreak to be installed.
Jailbreak not only allows the user to use any SIM card with the iPhone, but also access to the system so that third party applications can be installed. However, you will not find the tools or the necessary procedure to do this on any site. There are hot discussions on the sites of these teams, where the majority want to wait until Apple announces the official procedure, either with first official application or with the availability of the SDK kit. They fear that the flaw that they have found will be plugged by Apple - forcing them to find another and this task is becoming more and more difficult.
Of course, the community that awaits this version of jailbreak is also divided, between those who are impatient and those who understand the situation.

That's what you'll get next month when the $800 Fujifilm S100FS goes big box. Fujifilm's "most advanced consumer model" features Dual Image Stabilization (optical image and picture stabilization), up to ISO 6400 sensitivity at 6 megapixels (ISO 10,000 at 3 megapixels), 2.5-inch tilting LCD, 3 megapixel burst mode for a maximum of 50 shots at 7fps, and unique film-simulation modes optimized for portraiture, low-contrast (soft), vibrant colors (Velvia), or general use (Provia). Sounds good, but we'll have to wait for the reviews to see if there's any substance to the hype.

MacBook Air reviews in from Apple's starting lineup

We're still on waiting for the official 20,000 word review from John Mayer before we make our final decision, but tech journo heavyweights from USA Today, Wall Street Journal and Newsweek (with Pogue of the New York Times notably absent) have had their MacBook Airs for about a week now, and true to form are espousing some opinion on the slab of metal. Turns out there are few surprises, and you could probably draw the same conclusions from reading the spec sheets and drooling over the press shots like the rest of us losers. Battery life could be the biggest trouble point, with a couple guys rating it around 3.5

That spectacle comes courtesy of the folks at HotHardware, who loaded up each card in a suitably high-end system and put 'em through the usual array of benchmarks and tests. After all that was said and done, they gave the edge ever so slightly to the NVIDIA card, although

Wimax : The 3GPP hasn't said the last word
Source : ElectronistaIn the field of high-speed mobile, although 3G is now widely entrenched in Europe, it is likely to be quickly challenged by WiMAX, which offers potential transfer rates that far exceed 3G.
Yet the 3GPP, who define the GSM standards of tomorrow, came close to finalizing the specifications of what might be called "4G." Based on a technology quite similar to 802.11n + MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output), they reached a theoretical throughput of 326 Mb/s. A real-world demonstration was made in December with a Nokia unit reaching speeds of 173 Mb/s.
The technology will be deployed in 2009-2010. That leaves two years for providers to decide how they will be able to convince us to buy this new technology at a high

Apple crippling OS X debugging tool to protect iTunes DRM?
Filed under: Desktops, LaptopsWow, it looks like the cat-and-mouse game of DRM exploits is starting to inflict some collateral damage -- the DTrace debugging tool built into Leopard is apparently locked out of iTunes and any other app that opts-out. Reasons aren't clear, but it sure looks like Apple is trying to keep interested parties from seeing the inner workings of FairPlay and other DRM-enabled apps -- which probably makes the RIAA happy, but makes it harder for devs to get work done. In the words of one DTrace developer, the lockout is "antithetical to the notion of systemic tracing, antithetical to the goals of DTrace, and antithetical to the spirit of open source."
