HP's iPaq 210 shakes off numerous delays, finally available

First Apple Store in France Will be at "Carrousel du Louvre"
As we reported it last ihttp://www.hardmac.com/news/2007-09-19/#7217, Apple will open the first French Apple Store in Paris, not on the Champs Elysées as originally planned and expected, but in the famous Carrousel du Louvre located underneath the renowned Museum "Le Louvre".
Our information was confirmed today by a news released today by Paris Addict. They found the information in a document released by the Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris and published last December (immo_paris_commerces.pdf).

First CineBench Test with the new Mac Pro 3.0GHz
A reader, Nicolas has just received his Mac Pro Octo 3 GHz fitted with a Radeon X2600 XT. He shares with us the results obtained with Cinebench R10:
We have redone he same test using a first generation - 4 core Mac Pro
Running with a single core at the same frequency, the new machine does better; with multiple core, it is almost exactly twice as good (due to twice the number of cores). Even though this last result seems mathematically trivial, it is not so - since the efficiency of each core decreases as one adds more cores. The Mac Pro 4 x 3 GHz has an efficiency of 0.7775 per core, while the 8 x 3 GHz losses relatively little with an efficiency of 0.72375.
These excellent results are due partly to the improvement of the CPU architecture but more so to the new arch

Toshiba senkt Preise für HD-DVD-Player auch in Deutschland

H2O-Cases: Tauchen mit dem iPod nano
H2O Audio hat eine wasserdichte Kombi aus Case und Ohrhörer für die aktuelle iPod nano-Generation vorgestellt. Mit dem iN3 lässt sich bis zu 3 Meter tief tauchen die Hülle würde durchaus größere Tiefen vertragen, allerdings wird er Hörgenuss über die InEars dann durch den Wasserdruck unzumutbar beeinträchtigt. Wer angesichts der kalten Jahreszeit nicht an die Badehose sondern eher ans Snowboard denkt: Mit dem iN3 kann man sich durchaus auch im Tiefschnee lang legen, ohne sich Sorgen um den iPod machen zu müssen. Nokia zeigt sich nicht verhandlungsbereit
Nokia will an der Schließung des Bochumer Handywerks und der Verlagerung des Standorts ins rumänische Cluj festhalten. Das sagte Unternehmenssprecherin Arja Suominen heute in Helsinki und reagierte damit auf eine Initiative des nordrhein-westfälischen Ministerpräsidenten Jürgen Rüttgers (CDU). Sie bezeichnet die Entscheidung zur Schließung als "sehr genau durchdacht". Gefallen sei sie bereits im Dezember. Langfristige Analysen hätten ergeben, dass das Werk nicht wettbewerbsfähig sei. iTunes-Mietfilme nicht auf 5G-iPods
Bei der Ankündigung des digitalen Filmverleihs über iTunes wurde die Möglichkeit, die Filme auch auf einem iPod anzusehen mit Applaus aufgenommen. Nach einem Artikel im Apple-Blog TUAW wird für diese Funktion jedoch ein aktuelles iPod-Modell vorausgesetzt. iTunes weigert sich, einen gemieteten Film auf einen iPod der fünften Generation zu übertragen.
Und siehe da: Apple bestätigt in einem Support-Dokument, dass Leihfilme aus iTunes nur auf die aktuellen iPod-Modelle übertragen werden können: "Supported video-enabled iPod models are: iPod touch, iPod nano (3rd generation), and iPod classic." Dies dürfte mit den technischen Anforderungen für den zeitlich limitierten Filmverleih zusammen hängen.

Without official statement, Apple update the Apple Store webpage corresponding to the GeForce 8800 GT.
It is now clearly stated that this card will only be compatible in PCI Express 2.0 enable Mac pro models, in other words the last models.

Spieletest: Viva Pinata - Streicheltiere zicken am PC
PC-Spieler haben sich in den letzten Monaten von Microsoft immer mal wieder stiefmütterlich behandelt gefühlt, vor allem wenn es um Portierungen von der Xbox 360 ging. Die Halo-Reihe ist sicherlich ein ebenso gutes wie unerfreuliches Beispiel dafür. Apple hat seinen Anteil am US-Computermarkt 2007 auf 5,8 Prozent erweitert. Dies belegen die aktuellen Zahlen von IDC. Demnach wuchs das Unternehmen deutlich mehr als beispielsweise HP oder Dell. Neuer Build von Mac OS X 10.5.2 geht an Entwickler
Im Zuge der möglichen Produkte, die auf der Macworld vorgestellt werden sollten, befand sich auch das neue Leopard-Update 10.5.2. Seit vorgestern wissen wir, dass daraus aber leider noch nichts wurde. Anscheinend benötigt Apple für die finale und umfassendste Mac-OS-X-Aktualisierung aller Zeiten noch etwas Zeit und verlor deshalb auf der Messe zum Startzeitpunkt noch kein Wort.

Kensington hat den ersten USB-Display-Adapter vorgestellt, der auch am Mac funktionieren soll, die sd200V Notebook Docking Station. Dies ist aus den Spezifikationen des Gerätes zu entnehmen. Virtualisierung von Mac OS X 10.5 Server
Auf der Macworld präsentiert VMware eine Demoversion der Virtualisierung von Mac OS X 10.5 Server innerhalb von VMware Fusion. Möglich ist dies, da Apple mit Leopard eine Virtualisierung der Server-Variante auf Apple-Hardware gestattet. Unterstützt wird dabei auch die 64-Bit-Version des Betriebssystem. Laut golem weist VMware ausdrücklich darauf hin, dass für die Demo keine modifizierte Version des Betriebssystems verwendet werde.

links workers to their computers via wireless sensors that measure their metabolism. The system would allow managers to monitor employees’ performance by measuring their heart rate, body temperature, movement, facial expression and blood pressure. Unions said they fear that employees could be dismissed on the basis of a computer’s assessment of their physiological state.
Admittedly, systems like this could be used for good. If workers are overstressed, they could be given breaks or slow down work. However, with all things like this, the potential for misuse is huge.

Erste Eindrücke vom iTunes-Filmverleih
Viele US-amerikanische Technikportale konnten sich mittlerweile einen Eindruck der neuen Verleihfunktion für Videos im iTunes Store verschaffen. Nach Zählungen von Engadget sind im Moment 150 Filme verfügbar. HD-Version sollen nur über Apple TV bezogen werden können. Am Beispiel von Die Hard 4.0 gibt Engadet einen Einblick in den Verleihvorgang: Drei Minuten und (100 MB Datentransfer) nachdem der Filme ausgewählt und der Downloadvorgang gestartet wurde, bot iTunes an, mit dem Betrachten des Films zu beginnen. „Überraschend gut“ in Sachen Audio- und Videoqualität soll sich Bruce Willis am Anschluss auf einem 30-Zoll-Display mit 2560 x 1600 Bildpunkten präsentiert haben. Nach 30 Minuten (natürlich abhängig von der DSL-Leitung) war der Download der 1,5-GB-Datei beendet, bei der Wiedergabe während des Downloadvorgangs soll es zu keinerlei Unterbrechungen gekommen sein.

Audienz bei Jobs: John Markoff und David Pogue haben sich nach der Macworld-Keynote mit dem Apple-Gründer unterhalten. Er bestätigte darin, dass viele Prototypen notwendig gewesen seien, bevor das MacBook Air die gewünschte Größe hatte. Kosmos - OpenStreetMap-Daten offline nutzen
Im Unterschied zu Google Maps lassen sich die freien Kartendaten des OpenStreetMap-Projekts (OSM) direkt herunterladen und mit einem geeigneten Kartenrenderer auch ohne Internetverbindung nutzen. Das Programm Kosmos von Igor Brejc ermöglicht unter Windows die direkte Nutzung der Daten und kann im Netzwerk sogar als Kartenserver dienen. Außerdem gibt es vom Projekt selbst einiges zu vermelden. So arbeitet OpenStreetMap an einer Kooperation mit der Wikipedia und in Kürze soll das erste Buch zum Thema in Deutschland erscheinen.

Trauerspiel: Palm Desktop unzureichend an Vista angepasst
Fast 12 Monate nachdem Windows Vista erschienen ist, hat Palm den Palm Desktop in einer angepassten Version veröffentlicht. Allerdings kann die Anpassung nur als halbherzig bezeichnet werden, weil einige Geräte noch immer nicht unterstützt werden und auch QuickInstall sowie andere Komponenten gar nicht an Windows Vista angepasst wurden. Apple korrigiert die Preisangabe für Europa, kurzfristig ist der Preis in Pfund angegeben worden und entsprach rund 180 Euro ( wir berichteten ). Aus Pfund werden nun Euro, die 139 bleibt stehen. Vier Sicherheitslücken in QuickTime behoben
Die jüngste Updatewelle hing nicht nur mit den Apple-Neuvorstellungen zusammen. In der Mac- und Windows-Version von QuickTime hat Apple vier als kritisch eingestufte Sicherheitslücken behoben. Alle hätten von Angreifern mit veränderten Dateien zur Einschleusung schadhafter Software missbraucht werden können. Nicht behoben wurden hingegen die am vergangenen Wochenende entdeckte Schwachstelle im Real-Time Streaming Protocol. Da bereits Beispiel-Code aufgetaucht ist, der diese Sicherheitslücke demonstriert, dürfte ein weiteres QuickTime-Update nicht mehr allzuweit entfernt sein.

Neuer Rekord für Logitech

Sun rechnet mit deutlicher Gewinnsteigerung

iPod touch Upgrade nur mit iTunes 7.6 möglich
Nachdem Apple am vergangenen Dienstag das iPod touch Firmware Upgrade auf Version 1.1.3 vorstellte, wurden viele Benutzer verunsichert: 18 Euro zahlen für ein Sicherheitsupdate? Tatsächlich ist das Firmware-Update an sich kostenlos erhältlich, nur für ein Update mit den ebenfalls zur Verfügung stehenden Zusatzfunktionen wie Mail, Web-Clips und mehr muss man bezahlen. Doch auch das kostenlose, Sicherheitslücken schließende Update lässt sich unter Umständen nur installieren, wenn man iTunes zuvor auf Version 7.6 aktualisiert hat.

Die Pflicht ruft - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare angekündigt
Eines der erfolgreichsten Windows-Spiele des Jahres 2007 war der Egoshooter Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Auch im neuen Jahr kann sich der Titel noch in den Top-10 zahlreicher Online-Händler behaupten, ist also noch lange "kein altes Eisen". Der texanische Apple-Spielespezialist Aspyr bestätigte nun die Gerüchte um eine Mac-Version des Spiels. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare soll aller Voraussicht nach im kommenden Mai für den Mac veröffentlicht werden. Auch wenn noch keine Stellungsnahme seitens des deutschen Aspyr-Distributionspartners Application Systems Heidelberg vorliegt, ist davon auszugehen, dass das Spiel zumindest in der für den deutschen Markt geringfügig "entschärften" Version zeitnah seinen Weg nach Deutschland finden wird.

Apple Store in Zürich kommt
Noch bevor es in Deutschland soweit ist, wird Apple nach Italien seinen zweiten Store auf dem europäischen Festland in der Schweiz eröffnen. Spore wird zeitgleich für Windows-PCs & Macs erscheinen
Es geschehen doch noch Wunder. Nachdem die in den USA verfügbaren EA-Titel wie etwa Command & Conquer 3 noch immer nicht in Deutschland verfügbar sind, gab die deutsche Niederlassung des Spieleherstellers Electronic Arts nun via Pressemitteilung bekannt, dass die Mac-Version des kommenden Titels Spore zeitgleich mit der Windows-Fassung erscheinen wird - und das auch im deutschsprachigen Raum. Die Mac-Ausgabe des Spiels wird derzeit bereits auf der Macworld Expo vorgeführt.

Das US-Unternehmen ATP hat mit dem GPS Photo Finder einen Geologger vorgestellt, der als GPS-Empfänger zunächst kontinuierlich seine Position in eine interne Logdatei schreibt, während man mit der Digitalkamera Fotos schießt. "Researchers" hope to launch paper airplanes from space

FlipStart retail price nosedives, we're a little worried

Das Konzept bleibt gleich, der Hersteller hat versucht, den Tischlautsprecher möglichst kompakt zu konstruieren. HighEnd-Audio darf man angesichts der kompakten Gerätemaße also nicht erwarten, für leichte Unterhaltung in Hotel oder auch Zelt sollte es aber allemal reichen.
