Evoland, by Shiro Games, began life as the winning entry out of 1,400 in the 24th Ludum Dare, an online "Game Jam" that challenges participants to develop a game over the course of two days. The original version of the game was released online in 2012, but development has continued, and a new revision was introduced for PC and Mac. Last week, an iOS port was released for iPhone and iPad.
