In the US, there is a huge build-up to Christmas, but the day -- and week or so -- after is generally thought of only as a "dead zone" between Christmas and New Year's, filled with stores clearing inventory and accepting returns of unwanted gifts. Outside the US, however, Christmas traditionally carries on up to and beyond the New Year holiday, hence the traditional "12 Days" of Christmas.
