For users with many machines on local networks, it may be useful to link directly to a file on the network as opposed to sending files to and from computers, propagating them all over the place both in emails as well as in shared folders. Since Mac OS X supports Windows file sharing, these users can set up their computers to so all computers on a network can access files directly via hyperlinks.
