iPhone 5 takes 75% of US, Canada 4G Web traffic for 'newer' smartphones

According to a report from ad network Chitika, the iPhone 5 accounted for just over three quarters of North American 4G Web traffic generated by phones released after July 2012, which translates to a 40 percent share when including all 4G-capable smartphones.

iPhone apps need to make $47K to reach the top 10 paid apps chart

Distimo, a source for online app analytics, has released their June report covering the month of May, this time taking a look at what exactly it takes for an app to make it to the top chart positions in different app stores. The research report provided to TUAW Friday showed that to reach the top 10 paid apps on the iOS store an app needs 4,000 downloads per day, while earning a spot on the top grossing charts needs $47,000 per day. The amount of profit an app needs to bring in to stay in the top 50 paid apps differs greatly, with apps ranked around the number 50 spot averaging $12,000 a day. ComScore: Apple, Samsung retain dominance of smartphone market

Mobile analytics firm comScore today released data from the comScore MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the U.S. smartphone industry during the three month average period ending May 2013. Apple ranked as the top smartphone manufacturer with 39 percent market share, while Google Android led as the number one smartphone platform with 52 percent platform market share.

City planners ask for changes to upcoming Union Square Apple Store

San Francisco's city planning department has called for changes to Apple's upcoming Union Square store in a preliminary project assessment, the San Francisco Chronicle says. Apple's current proposal was sharply criticized in May, mainly for issues like an 80-foot blank wall along Stockton Street, and the expected removal of a popular fountain sculpted by Ruth Asawa. The Chronicle's coverage drew attention from SF mayor Ed Lee, who said he would re-examine Apple's plans.

PC Mag loves the new Airport Base Station

PCMag.com has run a review of Apple's new AirPort Extreme Base Station and they're very impressed. In keeping with Apple tradition they found the router featured the company's standard easy installation, complete with wireless setup. The base station is an upgrade from previous models to 802.11ac and marked excellent performance particularly in the 2.4 GHz band. in addition the AirPort Extreme's sleek redesign gives it improved wireless speed while staying fashionable. When stacked against of some of its competition the AirPort Extreme Base Station 802.11ac wireless wasn't quite as fast, but it's worth noting that PCMag still got 90 to 102 Mbps out of the base station. Earlier this year, we talked about limiting your child's access to iOS devices using Restrictions (Parental Controls). Did you know a similar set of controls exist on OS X, too? Netflix today announced the release of Max, a personal content assistant and guide that the company calls the "child of Siri and HAL 9000." Max is designed to help users choose movies and television shows to view, and he does so using personal tastes. Microsoft posts SkyDrive Pro apps for Windows 8, iOS

Microsoft has released native SkyDrive Pro apps for Windows 8 and iOS. The apps let users upload and share files to SkyDrive cloud storage, and open compatible photos, videos, and work documents. BlackBerry: BBM still scheduled to hit iOS

RIM announced back in May that BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) would be coming to iOS later this summer. With July steadily approaching, we still haven't heard any specific details as to when we might expect to see BBM hit the App Store. Earlier today, however, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins mentioned during an earnings conference call that BBM for iOS will, in fact, drop "before the end of the summer." I suppose that puts the release window, at the very latest, sometime in mid-late August. Apples neue Kampagne soll beim Publikum nicht gut angekommen

Laut der Consultingfirma Ace Metrix kommt die neue Apple-Kampagne «Designed by Apple» beim Publikum nicht so gut an wie frühere Kampagnen. Der Werbefilm «Our Signature» erreichte auf einer Skala, auf der der Industrie-Durchschnitt bei 542 Punkten liegt, nur deren 489 Punkte. Dies ist der tiefste Wert aller 26 im letzten Jahr gezeigten Apple-Werbespots. Apple-Werbespots erreichten in der Vergangenheit nicht selten Werte von über 700 Punkten. Am meisten Kritik erhält der neue Werbespot aufgrund der «traurigen» Musik und der mit 60 Sekunden doch eher langen Dauer. Auch dass sich der Werbespot auf die Firma und ihre Werte fokussiert und nicht auf einzelne Produkte und deren Funktionen, wird teils bemängelt. Bei weiblichen Zuschauern kommt der Werbefilm etwas besser an als bei männlichen. Am schlechtesten abgeschnitten hat der Werbespot derweil bei männlichen Zuschauern über 21.

Startet Apple neuen Patentprozess gegen Galaxy S4?

Richter Paul S. Grewal lehnte es in dieser Woche ab, das Samsung Galaxy S4 in einen laufenden Patentprozess zwischen Samsung und Apple zu integrieren. Die Aufnahme weiterer Geräte in den Prozess würde das ganze Verfahren stark belasten, argumentierte der Richter. Des Weiteren ärgerte sich der Vorsitzende über die vielen Anträge, welche die Parteien bei den Verhandlungen vor Gericht vorbringen. Mit diesen Anträgen würden Apple und Samsung sehr viel Zeit des Gerichts beanspruchen, welche anderen Streitparteien wohlmöglich fehlen wird. In der Antwort auf diesen Zwischenentscheid stellte der Anwalt von Apple klar, dass man die Patentverletzungen von Samsung nicht einfach hinnehmen werde. Stattdessen deutete der Anwalt an, notfalls einen weiteren Patentprozess zu starten, um auch gegen das Samsung Galaxy S4 vorgehen zu können. Android 4.3 Jelly Bean auf Samsung Galaxy S4 gesichtet

Ursprünglich für die Google-Play-Edition des Samsung Galaxy S4 wurde nun ein Build von Android 4.3 auf einem “Standard”-S4 gesichtet. Als Beleg sind Screenshots verfügbar. Auf einem GT-I9505G sollte der Build von Android 4.3 eigentlich installiert sein. Das G kennzeichnet in diesem Fall die Google-Play-Edition. Die Screenshots, die nun aufgetaucht sind, “sollen” allerdings von einem GT-I9505 stammen, also einer normalen Ausführung von Samsungs Flaggschiff-Smartphone. Die Buildnummer ist JWR66N.S005.130625. Die beiden Bestandteile der Buildnummer sollen dabei von Samsung selbst für interne Zwecke hinzugefügt worden sein, um Test-Builds zu unterscheiden. Nutzer von Skype an Apples iPhone und iPad können ab sofort kostenlos Videobotschaften versenden, und zwar so viele sie wollen. Bislang war dazu ein Premium-Abo notwendig. Microsoft hat Skype für iPad* auf Version 4.9 aktualisiert und Skype für iPhone* ebenfalls. Die wohl interessanteste Neuerung ist: Videobotschaften sind ab sofort kostenlos und unbegrenzt. Facebook is in the midst of constructing "Host Chat," a feature on the social network that allows users to set up AOL-like chat rooms that friends can join at will, without a specific invite.
