It's been too long since we've thrown one of our shindigs with gdgt -- and we're changing that right this second. If you can't make it to our bash at 82Mercer in NYC tonight, you can at least follow along with our event liveblog. Samsung is on hand with its latest gadget lineup, as is Sony, with its HD gear. DevJuice: iOS Artwork Extractor updated
Many devs find it useful to inspect system artwork -- whether for inspiration, for reverse engineering to help create consistent new elements, or simply for curiosity. In that goal, there's been no better tool than the open source iOS Artwork Extractor from Cédric Luthi.
The project, formerly UIKit Artwork Extractor, has now been updated for pretty much any iOS version you throw at it, including iOS 7. It also now enables you to scan arbitrary frameworks, not just UIKit.

American Airlines completes rollout of iPads to cockpits
American Airlines has finished deploying iPads to all of the planes in its fleet, according to an announcement. Over 8,000 tablets have been issued to pilots and trainers as a replacement for their earlier paper-based flight bags, which weighed around 35 pounds each. Each iPad is loaded with essential information such as flight manuals and navigation charts.

News: Report: Microsoft to bring Xbox, PC games to iPhone
Microsoft will bring Xbox and PC games to the iPhone within this fiscal year, according to a report. Japan’s Nikkei says that Microsoft plans to team up with Japanese company Klab Inc. to bring its games to the iPhone, including Age of Empires—a title that will be free to play worldwide, with other games to follow. iPhone-Hotspot-Passwort in 50 Sekunden gehackt

Passwörter aus Scrabble Seit iOS 4 lassen sich auf 3G-fähigen iPhones und iPads persönliche Hotspots erstellen, die mit einem Passwort geschützt werden. Dies besteht aus einem Wort und vier Ziffern. iPad now being used in every American Airlines cockpit
American Airlines has announced the deployment of over 8,000 iPads to the cockpits of its fleet as part of a new electronic flight bag for pilots. The roll out has lead to American discontinuing paper revisions to its terminal charts, saving money, paper, and mess in the future.
To put a number on how much effect the switch will have, the electronic flight bag is replacing more than 35 pounds of paper-based reference materials that pilots carry in their carry-on kitbag. By removing that extra weight from their flights American will save a minimum of 400,000 gallons of fuel and $12 million dollars annually, based on current fuel prices.

Firm says it has 'permanently' cracked Lightning authentication
A Chinese company, iPhone5mod, claims to have "permanently" solved the problem of iOS 7 popping up warnings for uncertified Lightning accessories. The solution is said to be hardware-based, and irreversible by Apple unless the company redesigns its Lightning technology. iPhone5mod is now selling five iOS 7-compatible accessories, include three cables and two iPhone 5 docks.

iPhone's Marimba ringtone becomes the catchy backing track for indy pop song
Since the iPhone first made it into the hands of the public nearly six years ago (June 29, 2007), one of the almost iconic sounds from the device has been the Marimba ringtone. Whether it's playing in the background during a church service or used as a wakeup alarm (to quote Dave Caolo, "I use that tone as my alarm in the morning so I've grown to despise it"), the Marimba has become part of our modern culture. Now indy band Mars Ago has recorded a new tune called "Don't Call Me" that uses the Marimba ringtone as a backing track.

Amazon optimizes MP3 store for iOS devices in the UK, makes it easier to access tunes

Microsoft to Bring Some Xbox and PC Games to the iPhone, 'Age of Empires' Expected First
According to a report by the Nikkei (via Reuters), Microsoft is planning on bringing a number of its Xbox and Windows games to the iPhone as soon as later this year. Microsoft has partnered up with Japanese gaming firm KLab Inc. to port its games over to both iOS and Android. US-Sammelklage wegen In-App-Kauf auf iPhone und iPad erfolgreich
Wegen In-App-Käufen, zumeist aus Spielen, auf iPhone oder iPad, erstattet Apple betroffenen Eltern nun Geld zurück. Dies wurde ihnen in einer E-Mail mitgeteilt. Eine Sammelklage hatten streitende Eltern in den USA gewonnen. Insgesamt 23 Millionen Eltern in den USA strengten 2011 eine Sammelklage gegen Apple an, weil ihre Kinder die In-App-Kauf-Funktion auf iPhone oder iPad ohne Autorisierung nutzten. Die ersten Minuten mit der Beta 2 zeigen: Flüssiger. Es macht tatsächlich ein Stück mehr Spaß damit zu arbeiten. Änderungen am System gab es auch.

Siri can learn how to pronounce your name in iOS 7
I've become a big Siri fan lately. After not quite getting the service when I first bought my iPhone, I've started using it to send a text without typing, grab quick driving directions and check the weather forecast. I just wish Siri loved me as much as I love her: Whenever she says my name, she always tells me, "Mike, scram!"
My name is actually pronounced as "Sh-", like "Shramm," but Siri's never asked otherwise. Fortunately, in iOS 7, that won't be the case. The latest version of Siri, currently in beta and arriving with the rest of the new iOS this fall, will allow you to tell Siri when she's mispronouncing something, and even correct her pronunciation, or choose from a few different options.

Vorbei mit Plastik? Samsung startet Joint Venture mit Carbon-Produzent, könnte neue Designära einläuten

Samsung ist ein Joint Venture mit dem Kohlefaser-Produzenten SGL Groups eingegangen. Analysten spekulieren, dass diese Kooperation das Ende der Pli-Pla-Plastikära der bisherigen Galaxy-Modelle bedeuten könnte. Samsung hat aus Gewichts- aber wohl auch aus Preisgründen bis dato auf Kunststoff beim Außendesign gesetzt. Zwar ist das Plastik sehr stabil und robust, aber nicht wenige finden die Anmutung und Haptik der glatten Smartdevices ein wenig, sagen wir, minderwertig. Das Gehäusedesign spiegelt die Qualitäten der Hardware und Software der Koreaner nur bedingt wieder.

Sony Xperia C Smartphone zur MAE 2013 erwartet
Laut diversen inoffiziellen Berichten wird Sony zur Mobile Asia Expo 2013 neue Produkte aus dem Bereich Smartphones vorstellen. Flipside controller tries again, thanks to iOS 7
The Flipside iPhone game controller was a Kickstarter project that began last year with an ambitious goal of $135,000, raising only about $10k of that before getting canceled due to lack of interest. Things have changed since the project was shut down in January, however. Apple has announced iOS 7, and with it, a set of official SDK hooks for game controller support, which means we're going to see a resurgence in third-party controllers like this one.

iOS 7 beta 2 available for developer download
The second beta of iOS 7 has just made it to the Apple Dev Center, hopefully bringing some new features and bug fixes to the iPhones of developers worldwide. This release goes out two weeks to the day after iOS 7 first became available to developers. The beta is available by going to Settings > General > Software Update on devices running the current iOS 7 beta.
According to developers who have reached out to TUAW with information about the new beta, it contains the usual "bug fixes and improvements." A document outlining the changes is available to developers at http://developer.apple.com/ios7/release-notes/, although several devs reported that the page is currently offline.

Edward Snowden may now be far from Hong Kong, but the South China Morning Post has just revealed more details from an interview he granted on June 12th while he was still there. Apple Seeds iOS 7 Beta 2 to Developers
Two weeks after Apple released the first beta version of iOS 7 following its unveiling at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple has just released a second beta for testing. The update is currently available through Apple's over-the-air updating system on iOS devices, and should be posted soon to the iOS Dev Center. iOS 7 is scheduled for release in the fall of this year, undoubtedly alongside new iOS hardware. Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPad mini will all be due for updates in the latter portion of this year, and if past history is any indication iOS 7 should be made available to the public just a few days before the launch of the next-generation iPhone.

Photos hint at A7 chip being used in iPhone 5S
Apple's next-generation flagship iPhone -- commonly identified as the iPhone 5S -- does appear to use an A7 processor, new photos suggest. The chip has an APL0698 model number, rather than the APL0598 for the A6, or the APL5598 for the A6X. Also of note is a "K1A0062" identifier, which may back reports that Apple has dropped Samsung as a chipmaker in favor of TSMC. Earlier A-series chips have "N" identifiers that refer to Samsung part numbers.

Apple has released the second beta of iOS 7 to registered developers, just two weeks after the first beta release of the new operating system. The second beta is available through Software Update in iOS settings. iOS 7 beta 2 is a 237 MB update that contains bug fixes and improvements. Supreme Court declines appeal in Mirror Worlds v. Apple case
The US Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal of the verdict in the Mirror Worlds v. Apple lawsuit, reports say. In 2008 Mirror Worlds accused Apple of infringing on its patents via OS X's Spotlight, Time Machine, and Cover Flow features. Although Mirror Worlds was initially awarded $625.5 million in damages, that verdict was overturned in 2012. The company had hoped to get damages reinstated on appeal.

Settlement reached in class action lawsuit over iOS in-app purchases
Settlement terms have been reached in the 2011 class action lawsuit over Apple's in-app purchase system, a new claims website indicates. The plaintiffs in the case argued that Apple's system allowed some developers to dupe children into buying large amounts of in-app content. WSJ: Facebook developing 'Reader', a Flipboard-like Twitter competitor for iOS
According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook is developing a new app called 'Reader,' which looks a lot like Flipboard, at least in its current iteration. Reader will reportedly compete with directly.
The Wall Street Journal says that currently Reader is only being developed for iOS and that Mark Zuckerberg is personally involved in the project. Interestingly, one of the original iPhone interface designers (and a current Facebook designer), Michael Matas, is leading the project.

Apple notifies iTunes users of In App Purchase settlement
Today I woke to an email from Apple's "In-App Purchase Litigation Administrator." The email informs iTunes account holders who've had a minor make an unapproved in-app purchase (IAP) that they may be eligible for iTunes store credit or a cash refund.
According to the terms of the class action lawsuit settlement, if a minor used your iTunes account to buy less than US$30 worth of IAP's, you are eligible for a US$5 iTunes store credit. If a minor used your iTunes account to buy more than $30 worth of IAP is, you're eligible for a cash refund. Users have until January 13, 2014 to submit a settlement claim. Baut TSMC Apple A8 für iPhone 6 und iPad 5?

Tim Cook macht seine Bonus-Aktien vom Erfolg von Apple abhängig
Tim Cook übernahm im Herbst 2011 die Führung bei Apple. Damals wurden ihm eine Million Aktienoptionen zugeteilt. Die ursprüngliche Vereinbarung sah die Auszahlung von 500’000 Aktien im Jahr 2016 vor, falls Tim Cook zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch im Unternehmen beschäftigt sein sollte. Die restlichen Aktien sollten unter den gleichen Bedingungen im Jahr 2021 ausbezahlt werden.
Auf Wunsch von Tim Cook wurden die Ausschüttungsbedingungen nun abgeändert, wie es von der US-Börsenaufsicht SEC heisst.
Das «Compensation Committee» des Apple-Verwaltungsrates hat den Anträgen von Tim Cook zugestimmt und die Vergütung stärker vom langfristigen Erfolg von Apple abhängig gemacht.

Online Apple Store, Apple Java update beset by technical problems
Two significant technical problems hit Apple over the weekend, accounts say. The first is the discovery that early installers of last week's Lion/Mountain Lion Java update may have downloaded a premature build, xM4508, which can prevent some Java apps from working. Digitimes reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Company (TSMC) has officially landed a three-year deal with Apple to produce the A-series chips that will be used to power upcoming iOS devices. The deal is said to begin with the A8 chip, with future A9/A9X chips also mentioned as being included.TSMC will start to manufacture Apple's A8 chips in small volume in July 2013, and substantially ramp up its 20nm production capacity after December, the sources revealed. The foundry will complete installing a batch of new 20nm fab equipment, which is capable of processing 50,000 wafers, in the first quarter of 2014, the sources said. A closer look at iBeacons: Location awareness through Bluetooth LE
One of the many new features coming to iOS 7 that barely got a mention at WWDC is iBeacons. iBeacons is Apple's name for Bluetooth Low Energy (also known as Bluetooth Smart), which allows iOS devices to know where they are on a micro location level.
Currently iOS devices know where they are based on Wi-Fi triangulation or built-in GPS, each of which is an approximation and only accurate to within a few meters. This is good when you're looking for an address, however it's not useful when you're looking for a store in a mall. iBeacons aims to change that by allowing the iPhone to talk to Bluetooth Low Energy locators located inside buildings.

Apple-Store-Website mit zeitweisem Ausfall – CDN Schuld
Zeitweise ist der Apple Store online nicht zu erreichen gewesen oder aber die Website wurde ohne passende Stilvorlagen und entsprechend ohne Layout geladen. Swisscom lanciert plattformübergreifenden Messenger «iO»
Die Swisscom startet heute einen eigenen Instant-Messaging-Dienst «iO». Mit diesem plattformübergreifenden Dienst kann telefoniert und Nachrichten ausgetauscht werden. «iO» erlaubt somit eine kostenlose Kommunikation zwischen Smartphone-Benutzern. Die Swisscom bietet mit «iO» einen direkten Konkurrenten zu Apps wie WhatsApp oder Facebook Messenger oder auch Apples iMessage an.
Offiziell wird «iO» erst heute Abend lanciert, die App kann aber bereits jetzt im iOS App Store geladen werden. Für die Nutzung der Plattform muss man kein Kunde der Swisscom sein. Auch funktioniert der Dienst in Mobilfunknetzen anderer Anbieter.

DOJ vs. Apple: iBooks-Rechtsstreit geht in finale Runde
In den USA kämpft Apple vor Gericht nicht nur gegen Konkurrenten, sondern in einem aktuellen Prozess auch gegen die Vorwürfe des Justiz-Amtes («Department of Justice», DOJ). Die US-Wettbewerbsbehörden werfen Apple im Prozess vor, mit einigen grossen Verlagen ein Kartell gebildet zu haben, um die Preise für elektronische Bücher künstlich hochhalten zu können.
Ähnlich wie bei der schweizerischen Buchpreisbindung einigten sich die grossen Verlage und Apple beim sogenannten «Agentur-Modell» auf die Festlegung der Preise durch die Verlage. Erster Trailer zu Indie-Biopic «Jobs» mit Ashton Kutcher
Zum Biopic «Jobs» mit Ashton Kutcher als Steve Jobs ist nun erstmals ein Trailer veröffentlicht worden. Neben einem besseren Verständnis der Film-Story sieht man darin vor allem auch wie Kutcher sich als Steve Jobs macht.
Der Film fokussiert vor allem auf frühere Episoden aus Steve Jobs Leben — darunter seine Reise nach Indien, die Anfänge von Apple bis zu seinem Rauswurf und dann bis zum Jahrtausendwechsel. Als der Film am Sundance Film Festival Premiere feierte, erhielt er durchzogene Kritiken. Vor allem auch Apple-Mitgründer Steve Wozniak zog über den Film-Plot her und bezeichnete die verfilmte Geschichte als «weit davon entfernt was wirklich geschah».
