Proview reportedly rejects Apple's settlement offer
Earlier this week, a report suggested Apple and Proview were far apart on a settlement for the iPad trademark in China. According to Sina, the difference between the two companies is about US$384 million. The report claims Apple offered Proview $16 million for the iPad name and the Chinese company rejected the offer. Proview reportedly wants $400 million from Apple so it can appease its creditors.

iPhone was Japan's best-selling smartphone in 2011, Android more than comfy as well
It's deemed likely that Apple had the top-selling cellphone in Japan this past fall, but how did it do in all of 2011? Quite well, if you go by MMRI's estimates. The iPhone had 30 percent (almost 7.3 million) of the Land of the Rising Sun's 24.2 million sales among individual smartphone labels, or nearly double Sharp's 17.5 percent. Confirmed: Rovio acquires rights to Casey's Contraptions
Rovio's Ville Heijari has confirmed the rumor we heard yesterday is true, and Rovio is taking over the iOS Casey's Contraptions title from developers Noel Llopis and Miguel A. Friginal. We're still not sure what the exact business agreement is, but it sounds like an acquisition of all rights associated with the game, and Rovio seems to also have kept on Llopis and Friginal as developers for their services. The Casey's Contraptions title is going to be removed from the App Store for now, and return as an official Rovio title for both iOS and Android (along with other platforms, possibly, later on this year).

iPhone grabs top spot amongst Japanese smartphones in 2011
The iPhone was the bestselling smartphone in Japan during 2011, according to data from MM Research. Apple sold 7.25 million units, giving it 30 percent of smartphone sales, and 17 percent of all cellphone sales. Android, though, was the most popular smartphone platform, beating out iOS with a 69 percent share. Together the two operating systems accounted for 99 percent of Japanese smartphone sales.

FTC launches probe into Facebook's Instagram buyout
The US Federal Trade Commission is launching a competition investigation regarding Facebook's recent $1 billion buyout of Instagram, say two sources for the Financial Times. The effort has allegedly already begun, with the FTC starting to collect information from "at least two" of Facebook's biggest competitors. The probe is described as routine for deals worth more than $68.2 million, but could delay the Instagram acquisition well past when Facebook told investors things would be completed.

Little delights: Pinching a page in iBooks Author
Delighting and surprising are hallmarks of the Apple user experience. Imagine my response then when today, while working in iBooks Author, I discovered than in iBooks 2, I could pinch a landscape page and it would jump me to the table-of-contents view.
Steve and I are converting our Pitch Perfect book into iBooks Author format. That means we have to jump between presentations and orientations quite a lot to make sure each page layout works properly.

New DVD anti-piracy warning now packs double the nag
Starting this week, you'll find any newly-minted DVDs and Blu-ray discs will now include a similarly fresh anti-piracy message. Homeland Security's special agent badge now partners up with the FBI's own emblem on the new warning played before DVDs -- and it looks like it'll still be unskippable. Bang and Olufsen reveal new BeoPlay V1 TV, A8 Airplay dock
Bang and Olufsen has unveiled the BeoPlay V1, the first television from the high-end audio manufacturer's brand B&O Play. The television uses self-contained speakers set in a Scandinavian-industrial style powder-coated steel cabinet, contrasting with the previous TV releases. The manufacturer also noted an iOS docking station, called the BeoPlay A8, which adds Apple AirPlay support as an update to the original BeoSound 8.

DevJuice: Injection for Xcode
Are you one of the many devs who miss Xcode's "Fix and Continue" feature? Apple removed "Fix and Continue" in Xcode 4. This option allowed you to patch your binary with updated code, as you ran and debugged it.
Well, there's good news. Developer John Holdsworth has released Injection for Xcode. It's an OS X application that lets you inject those same code changes into running applications for development and debugging. It works with both OS X and iOS apps, including those running on devices.

New Spanish Apple Store to open Sat.; four more rumored
Apple is opening a seventh store in Spain this Saturday at 10AM, the company has announced. The shop will be located in the Nuva Condomina mall, in the southern city of Murcia near Cartagena and the Mediterranean coastline. iPad mini: 7-Zoll-Tablet soll im Oktober zeitgleich zum neuen iPhone erscheinen

You choose a font, a text color or background pattern, or even a typing animation, and the app constructs a gif for you, pastes it into the system keyboard, and offers to hop you over to Messages.

Source claims $200-250 7-inch iPad in October
Apple is aiming for an October release date for its frequently-rumored 7-inch iPad, an iMore source says. More specifically, though, the person says that the tablet will be virtually identical to the current 9.7-inch iPad, including even a 2048x1536 display. That would give it the same 326ppi pixel density as the iPhone 4S, and more than the current iPad's 264ppi. Pricing is expected to be just $200-250, despite regular iPads starting at $499.

Bing gets big remake with Snapshot, social sidebar, dig at Google (video)
Microsoft's determination to ratchet up the search engine wars just got clearer with a major rethink of Bing that includes a few potshots at Google. While the search results themselves are still prominent, there's now a Snapshot area in the middle that aggregates the common tasks linked to your search, such as booking a hotel room. Miami Zoo orangutans get iPads
The orangutan handlers at the Miami Zoo are testing out a new method of communicating with the captive orange apes. Trainers at Jungle Island are getting the apes to interact with simplistic apps on Apple iPads, opening new possibilities for human-orangutan interaction. Apple sales in China growing rapidly
Apple said during its recent earnings conference call that sales in China are booming, and now a report from Beijing Business Today shows us just how quickly Apple is making inroads into the Asian country.
According to the report, Apple's Q2 2012 sales have tripled from the same quarter last year, and China now accounts for 20 percent of Apple's global revenue, up from 2 percent in 2009. Thus far in Fiscal Year 2012, Apple's China sales reached $12.4 billion, a figure that almost matches the $13 billion in China sales the company reported for all of 2011. It's not only the iPhone and iPad that's doing well; MacBook sales have also jumped 60 percent since the device first made its Chinese debut.

New York restaurant adopts iPads, saves money
The next time you're at the Brooklyn (NY) Tap House choosing from the wide variety of beers on tap, don't be surprised if you see iPads at the bar or an iPod touch in the hands of your waitperson. The gastropub has installed a point-of-sale system from Albuquerque-based POSLavu that uses the Apple devices in place of a much more expensive traditional restaurant POS system.
The main attraction for the POSLavu system, according to restauranteur and co-owner Hugo Salazar, was the price. Many restaurants use systems from Micros or Aloha that can sport price tags of US$20,000 or more; the bottom line for the devices and software at the Brooklyn Tap House was about $7,000.

Latest Lion update shows more preparation for Retina Macs
Yesterday's OS X 10.7.4 update also brought with it more preparation for Macs equipped with Retina displays, observes AppleInsider. One example is the icon for TextEdit, which was previously a 209KB image measuring 512x512, but now takes up 1.7MB, and has doubled in resolution to 1024x1024. Other icons have grown without doubling in resolution; these include ones for Address Book (from 279KB to 484KB) and Dashboard (from 130KB to 226KB).

Foxconn und Apple teilen sich Kosten für Verbesserungen in China

Astronut for iPad available, use iPhone as controller
If you enjoy casual games and have both an iPhone and an iPad, then you'll want to check out Astronut from The Iconfactory. Apple Korea changes rules for free iPad, iPod replacements
Apple Korea has agreed to change the way it handles replacing defective iPads and iPods in the country, reports say. Until recently, people bringing in faulty hardware would typically get a refurbished device if a replacement was needed. Apple has been persuaded by South Korea's Fair Trade Commission, however, to follow local laws, and will now replace defective iPads and iPods with entirely new units for a period of up to one month after purchase.

Apple, Foxconn to share cost of factory improvement
Foxconn chief Terry Gou said that his company and Apple will share the costs of improving labor conditions at the Chinese factory that assembles many of Apple's products. Gou did not reveal the amount to be spent or how it would be divided between Apple and Foxconn.

Apple said offering Proview $16 million for iPad trademark
The settlement offer Apple is extending to Proview is valued at $16 million, according to local reports. Earlier this week a Proview lawyer claimed that the two parties were discussing a compensation package, and that Apple had even named an amount, but at the time he declined to provide any more details. If accurate, the $16 million figure will still fall well short of the $63 million Proview owes to creditors as a part of its bankruptcy.

Man uses iPhone app to revive stunned bird
A British tree surgeon, Leon Timms, was at home recently when he saw a tiny chaffinch lying on the ground. The small bird had apparently flown into one of the solar panels on Timms' roof or smacked into a window, and it was dazed and having problems breathing. Siri isn't just a personal assistant who can read your messages or check your calendar. The voice assistant may also play a role in finding a cure for cancer. Die weltweite Verbreitung des neuen iPad kennt (fast) keine Grenzen. In den kommenden beiden Tagen wird Apple das neue Tablet in 30 weiteren Ländern anbieten. Speziell Lateinamerika und der Nahe Osten können sich freuen.
Entdeckt wurde die Ausweitung unter anderem auf Apples eigener Web-Seite, die die Verfügbarkeit des neuen iPad in 13 weiteren Ländern für den 11. Mai ankündigt. Die anderen Länder wurden beim Besuch der jeweiligen, landesspezifischen Stores entdeckt.

Apple Korea to replace iPads, iPods to comply with regulations
Apple changed its after-sales policy in Korea and is now offering a "best in the world" replacement plan for Korean customers with defective products, according to a report in The Korea Herald. In compliance with its global return policy, Apple previously replaced a defective product with a refurbished one. Now, the company has a new set of standards in Korea that will provide customers with a new unit when a defective product is returned within 30 days of purchase.
Apple started replacing defective iPhones with new units back in October 2011 and recently said it will apply the same policy to the rest of its products, except the iMac. The change was prompted by a bill that went into effect on April 1. The bill

Mozilla slaps Windows RT as a return to the 'digital dark ages' for limiting browser choice, Google also waves fist angrily
Mozilla is waving red flags about Microsoft's forthcoming Windows RT (the variety designed to run on ARM processors). Apple and its controversial Chinese manufacturing partner Foxconn are said to sharing the costs on improving work conditions at its Chinese factories. Adobe makes Lightroom 4 available on Mac App Store
Two months after its official debut, Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom 4 pro-level photo managing and editing software has come to the Mac App Store. The program is priced identically to the boxed version, but is aimed at new users (since owners of previous versions of Lightroom can upgrade to 4.0 for $79 through Adobe). Deal app Pirq to hit Silicon Valley with Apple exclusives
In an unusual move, Apple has partnered with regional "daily dining deals" app Pirq (free) on its first appearance in the Silicon Valley area to offer exclusive restaurant deals to Apple employees, AppleInsider reports. Sony's final 2011 report shows a record net loss, optimism for 2012
After a slew of bad news and drastically restated projections, Sony has reported the numbers for its full 2011 financial year and as expected, they're not good. Consmr is another barcode scanner app that just released on the App Store that's targeted at groceries and pharmacy products. There are lots of barcode apps out there: ShopSavvy is one of the more popular, and we've covered RedLaser before, and all of these work pretty much the same: Aim your iPhone's camera at a barcode, and immediately get pricing, reviews, comparisons or even coupons all designed for whatever you've scanned.

Company sues Apple, others over claim of patent on 3G
This is one of the weirder claims in the already strange area of patent claims going on around cellphone technology lately. A company based in New Jersey named Golden Bridge Technologies has come forward saying that it owns patents on some technologies that were eventually used to create the 3G phone protocol standard, and that it's holding device manufacturers such as Apple, Barnes & Noble, and others accountable for the patents. A complaint filed in California earlier this week says that Golden Bridge's patent covers 3G tech, and that anyone using that tech owes them money.

Google files for mistrial in ongoing Oracle court saga
As expected, Google has petitioned Judge William Alsop for a mistrial following the jury's refusal to rule on a crucial matter in phase one of its trial versus Oracle. Near-simultaneously, Oracle filed its response to suggest that the judge rule on the "fair use" question that the jury couldn't agree on. Neither Google nor Oracle has responded to its counterpart's filing with the court.
