KegDroid dispenses beer with the help of a Xoom tablet and an Arduino board
Here's an instance of NFC technology that's more exciting than yet another tap-to-pay scenario. Google employee Paul Carff combined a Motorola Xoom running ICS with an Arduino microcontroller to create KegDroid, a friendly green beer dispenser. The Xoom acts as a gatekeeper to that brewed goodness, only letting the bot dispense drinks after users swipe an authorized badge. Barron's: Apple should be in the Dow
Apple has been traded on the NASDAQ exchange since it first went public back in 1980. For most of that time, AAPL has been part of the NASDAQ 100 index, so a gain or loss by the company has an impact on the technology-oriented exchange. A post on Barron's today posits that Apple, which is now the world's most valuable company, should be part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average instead.

Internet speeds drop around the world according to Akamai, adoption rate up
Here's an odd one: average connection speeds around the globe dropped 14 percent to just 2.3 Mbps during the last quarter of 2011. The drop off remains something of a mystery since the data used to calculate that result doesn't include mobile broadband (so its increased adoption can't be dragging down the whole) and Akamai offers no explanation. Google Wave officially dead as Google prepares to shut down
As promised, Google has pulled the plug on its Google Wave online communications service. It launched in 2009 but never got off the ground, and development on the project stopped back in mid-2010. Support continued, however, due to the open-source nature of the undertaking.

iTunes Match reaches Italy, Greece, Austria, more
Apple has once again expanded the availability of iTunes Match, the company's music upload and streaming service, reports say. The service is now available in several more countries, including Austria, Italy, Greece, Portugal,and Slovenia. In Italy the service is priced at €25 a year.

Tony Fadell: First iPhone almost had a clickwheel
Tony Fadell recently appeared on The Verge's On The Verge talk show/web series, and he shared a tidbit about early versions of the iPhone, which he worked on as Senior VP of the iPod division at Apple back in 2006. The Verge says that Apple "seriously considered" a hardware keyboard for the original iPhone, according to Fadell, but if you watch the clip itself, you can see that Fadell confirms Apple never made a keyboard for it. The issue was "definitely discussed," he says, but nothing was ever made into a prototype.

Apple, Microsoft asked to explain pricing to Australian government
Apple and Microsoft are among a few tech companies going before the Australian Parliament this week, asked to explain what many are seeing as price gouging in the Australian market. Here in the US, for example, Apple's Mac OS X Server 10.6 sells for $499, but in Australia, the same software sells for $699. Similarly, iTunes albums that sell for $9.99 in the US often sell for more than $20 overseas, despite the Australian and US dollar being less than a few cents different.

Apple objects to showing Eminem case files in separate Unive
Apple is fighting a discovery request in a class action lawsuit brought by musicians like Rick James and Rob Zombie against Universal Music, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Specifically the plaintiffs want access to trial exhibits, expert reports, depositions, and other material from a suit by FBT Productions against UMG subsidiary Aftermath, filed over money owed from music by rapper Eminem. Apple, Motorola both try for summary judgment in US lawsuit
Apple and Motorola in near-tandem have motioned for summary judgment in Apple's Wisconsin-based lawsuit over alleged Motorola violations of patents. The actions, both filed on Friday, would have Apple try to have some of its patent claims validated while Motorola wanted the majority of Apple's patent arguments ruled invalid. Most of Motorola's objections center around Apple's attempts to find Motorola violating its commitment to FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) patent licensing for 3G and Wi-Fi, effectively shutting down the lawsuit itself.

Magic: The Gathering creator kickstarting iOS game
I admit, I played Magic: The Gathering in high school. I strutted around with my little box of cards and spent my Friday nights at the gaming shop trying to prove I was one of the big guys. Instead, I proved I just really sucked at Magic.

Australia asks Microsoft, Apple to explain high local prices
Technology companies, including Microsoft and Apple, are being asked by the Australian government to explain why prices of downloadable content in that country are higher than in the US. Hulu may curb service with more authentication
Hulu may remove itself from contention as a pure Internet video service based on rumors overnight. The historically connected New York Post cited insiders who claimed the service would take the Fox authentication strategy, where customers must prove they have conventional TV access, and make it a broader policy. AllThingsD looks at Paypal's new payments app
AllThingsD reporter Lauren Goode spent some time shopping with both Pay with Square and PayPal's new mobile payment app. The two solutions are one of several up-and-coming mobile payment platforms competing for your virtual wallet.
Overall, Goode concluded that paying with the PayPal app was "relatively quick and painless." Not surprisingly, she noted that the biggest hindrance to either solution is the lack of merchants who are willing to offer mobile payments. It's still too new of a technology to go mainstream, at least right now.

Study says wind turbines raise surrounding area temperature, but only at night
Who said the butterfly effect couldn't apply to renewable energy? Though wind farms are considered pretty green on the energy-generating spectrum, it looks like they, too, have an impact on the planet. According to a study published today in the journal Nature Climate Change, turbines can raise the local temperature -- albeit slightly. From 2003 to 2011, researchers monitored satellite data for west-central Texas, which is home to 2,350-plus turbines and four of the world's largest wind farms. Angry Birds Space hits 50 million milestone, smashes it, crushes pigs in the process

Angry Birds Space reaches 50 million downloads in 35 days
Rovio has announced that Angry Birds Space has reached 50 million downloads in a space of just 35 days. The developer says that the title has broken all of its previous records, and in fact claims that Space is "the fastest growing mobile game yet," though no comparison points are quoted. Briefly: iPads take over kids' tables, Vue 10.5 pre-release
Following a move started by flagship Apple stores in January, retail locations have begun swapping out iMacs at their kids' table with iPads. Java vet says Google 'slimed' Sun as Oracle trial phase ends
Java pioneer James Gosling has criticized Google for the tactics it used in going without a Java license for Android. He argued that, despite former Sun chief Jonathan Schwartz saying Sun couldn't sue Google, the decision to skip a license still hurt the company. Apple has hired Jessica Jensen, a former executive at Yahoo!, to its iAd team, according to a new report. Citing anonymous sources, AllThingsD reports that Jensen will work for recently-hired iAd head Todd Teresi. Verizon gets new prepaid plans, adds Jetpack hotspot to contract-free lineup
And just like that Verizon has revamped its prepaid pricing structure. Starting tomorrow, May 1st, the carrier will be offering unlimited talk and text packaged with 1GB of data for $80 a month. Skype for iPad 4.0 offers new video preview option, crash recovery
Skype has released version 4.0 of its app for iPad and iPhone (both free). There are a few nice changes this time around. The app now lets you pre-position your video preview as you like. It also restarts automatically after an "unexpected shutdown." That's "crash" to you and me.
Skype also states that accessibility and overall stability have been improved, along with some minor UI improvements and bug fixes. The change log is the same for both apps.

Apple confirmed as Bloom Energy's customer
CNet confirmed today that Bloom Energy will be supplying fuel cells to Apple. This will go toward powering Apple's North Carolina data center.
GigaOM originally reported last month that Bloom Energy would be Apple's supplier for the fuel-cell farm. There will be 4.8 megawatts of biogas fuel cells, what the company calls Bloom Boxes, powering all those servers. Apple also uses biogas fuel cells at the Cupertino campus.
It's not the only eco-friendly technology Apple is using in Maiden, N.C.

Korea lets any store sell phones, raises Apple Store chance
South Korea is about to take further steps that could open up not just overall mobile competition but a possible retail presence for Apple, local publication Maeil said Monday. Commercial space shuttle prototypes fly through wind tunnel testing
A pair of companies developing their own commercial space shuttles are presumably trying to flatten their hair after some rigorous wind tunnel testing. First up, Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos (the guy behind Amazon), which has largely quiet on its efforts to shuttle astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Space Vehicle setup will plump for a biconic shape (seen above), with a flattened side and a split flap. Apple defends its tax practices in the New York Times
A recent New York Times article slams Apple for avoiding billions in state and federal taxes using common corporate loopholes. Apple didn't take kindly to this report and has issued a four-paragraph response defending its practices.
The Cupertino company says it pays "an enormous amount of taxes which help our local, state and federal governments." Besides paying taxes, Apple also points out that its "among the top creators of American jobs in the past few years."

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft settle Android patent fight
Barnes & Noble and Microsoft on Monday settled an Android patent dispute through a union. An e-reading partnership, Newco, will see Microsoft take a $300 million, or 17.6 percent, stake in a project that should merge Barnes & Noble's Nook business and its college division. Consumer spending on movies increased in Q1 of 2012
The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) has reports that consumer spending on movies rose in the first quarter of the year, the first such rise in many years. Consumers spending increased by 2.5 percent for the quarter to $4.45 billion, which came on the back of a staggering 545.5 percent increase in subscription-based streaming over the same period. BBC's Planet Earth returns as a live simulcast next week -- but not in the US (video)

Your smartphone and / or tablet is just begging for an update. From time to time, these mobile devices are blessed with maintenance refreshes, bug fixes, custom ROMs and anything in between, and so many of them are floating around that it's easy for a sizable chunk to get lost in the mix. PhotoFunia creates seamless Special FX on your iPhone
PhotoFunia is a clever and free novelty app for iPhone camera buffs. It will allow you to create a variety of special effects that would take quite awhile in something like Photoshop.
Here are some examples: Using face detection, it can take a photo of a friend and cleanly insert the face over another body like an astronaut in a space suit or someone atop a motorcycle or a surf board.
Additionally, it can take any scene and matte it into an existing frame. Get your picture in lights in Times Square or get a scene in an art museum with everyone admiring your favorite pictures.
The app requires a data connection to work. PhotoFunia sports more than 250 different effects and more are added on a regular basis.

Review: HTC One X with LTE
For HTC, 2011 was sometimes considered a write-off: what looked to be a promising year with an early 4G lead saw the company overwhelmed by Apple and Samsung, and even by its own at times confusing lineup with problematic phones like the Thunderbolt. Another quarter, another blowout. While analysts and pundits imagined that domestic iPhone sales would signal an end to the gravy train, international demand pushed the handset past the 35 million mark and shot AAPL back above the $600 line. Even with the iPad refresh hitting at the end of the quarter, Apple sold almost 12 million of the tablets to get to 67 million total sales in just two years on the market.
