Google TV revamp said getting better UI, speed
Allusions to an upcoming Google TV revamp were supported Friday afternoon by a rumor of what the refresh entails. The at times slow platform should get faster with a new chipset, presumably a newer Atom. SAI also understood from its source it would involve the long-delayed third-party app support and a better experience, although the definition of this wasn't given.

Square to add encryption to mobile card reader, skimmers put on notice
It's only been a couple days since we first heard about Visa's involvement with Square, but the credit card giant is already making its mark on the mobile payment startup. At the Visa Global Security Summit on Wednesday, Square Security Lead Sam Quigley revealed that the company will distribute an encrypted card reader this summer, which will work exclusively with its mobile payment app. The current reader theoretically scans credit card data to any app, but the encrypted version will only work with Square, which should alleviate

Panasonic app uses AR to place your new big screen dreams
Just in time for the weekend, this is about the wackiest use of augmented reality that we've seen yet. The Panasonic Viera AR Setup Simulator is a brand new free app in the App Store that uses AR to put a virtual big screen television right in your living room, so you can see what it looks like in place before you actually buy and "install" it. The idea is that you download and print the AR market from Panasonic's site, and then install the app, and use your iPhone to "see" the TV in place.

Intel's Cedar Trail gets some specs, combines CPU and GPU on a single chip
That new processor smell has barely started to fade from Oak Trail and we're already getting some tantalizing details about the next generation of Atom chips -- Cedar Trail. As expected, Intel has moved to 32nm, which allows it to cram the GPU and the CPU onto the same sliver of silicon. Apple seeds third build of Lion Developer Preview 2
Apple has seeded a new build of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion to developers today. The build, labeled version number 11A444d, can be downloaded through Software Update for those of you running previous Lion builds. The update weighs in at 1.22 GB.
This is the third release of Lion Developer Preview 2, and as Apple doesn't list any details about the latest fixes and changes incorporated into it, it is likely that there are no major changes since the release of the second build of of Lion Developer Preview 2 two weeks ago. Verizon document suggests LG Revolution will have Netflix pre-installed
We didn't exactly need any more evidence that the LG Revolution would be the first Android phone to support Netflix, but a new, seemingly authentic Verizon document posted by an Android Central forum member has now all but confirmed that fact. What's more, considering that Verizon touts Netflix as one of the phone's main features, it seems safe to assume that the app will also come pre-installed for your convenience. Apple seeds new dev builds of Mac OS X Lion, Xcode 4.1
Apple is now seeding two important software updates to developers. The first is a new build of Mac OS X Lion, identified as 11A444d. Although the file measures approximately 1.22GB, the code is not marked under a "Preview 3" header, implying that it is instead a third build of Preview 2. Apple Store thieves descend from roof in San Francisco
ifoAppleStore.com is reporting that thieves broke into the Chestnut Street Apple Store in San Francisco last night, apparently entering the store through the roof straight into the inventory area in back of the store, and making off with an undisclosed amount of Apple devices. Unfortunately, I can't find any other reports of the crime online, but since it's apparently a recent happening, we'll have to take the blog's word for it.
They also say that the building in San Francisco is surrounded by other buildings of the same height, so it wouldn't have been too hard for thieves to climb over and drop in on the Apple establishment. The police of course have acce

Microsoft posts iPhone to Windows Phone 7 app migration tool
Microsoft has quietly sought to lure over more iPhone developers to Windows Phone 7with a freshly published API Mapping tool. The utility helps iOS coders take a programming call from an app written for Apple's platform and translate it to the equivalent in WP7. The focus so far centers on porting interface, networking, and raw data controls.

IDC claims iPhone marketshare has grown 115%
The International Data Corporation reports that Apple has been taking over the smartphone market in the past few years, with its market share growing by almost 115% over the past year. Apple's still not on top of the list (as there are much more established manufacturers on there, and as we've heard, Apple has some competitors for market share as well), but the company's growth is phenomenal, and has earned it a number four spot on the top five list worldwide, with 5% of the global market.
Even more phenomenal, of course, is the fact that Apple has basically done this with one phone, rather than competitors' multiple lines and flavors of smartphones and operating systems. When the

Amazon hopes to one-up iTunes with 69-cent hit songs
Amazon possibly raised the stakes in US music on Friday with a major shift in its 69-cent section in Amazon MP3. Instead of selling mostly older or niche songs, the store is currently selling songs that are or were very recently hits, including singles from Dr. Dre and Talib Kweli. HBO Go app now officially out in App Store, Android Market
The teased HBO Go app that will allow for streaming cable TV content to portable devices has now gone live, and ahead of its initially promised May 2 launch date. ABI: iPhone could kick Nokia to third place by end of 2011
Nokia's fall and Apple's rise could be quick enough that the iPhone pushes Nokia to third place in smartphones by the end of the year, ABI Research predicted Friday. Having already slipped behind Android, Nokia's plunge from 40 percent of the smartphone space a year ago to 25 percent in in early 2011 was seen as a sign Nokia would continue to drop just as Apple was climbing. iPhone shipments were up by 15 percent, helped in part by the Verizon iPhone, and at the current rate was growing just as quickly as Nokia was shrinking.

Ecco nennt sich dieser Rallye-Tropfen, der natürlich voll elektrisch ist und vor allem auch als Caravan zu überzeugen weiß. Digitale Nomaden anders interpretiert sozusagen. HBO Go for iOS hands-on
HBO Go has been live on the iTunes App Store and Android Market for just a few short hours, but we've already put it through the paces, poking and prodding on our iPad and iPhone, to see what all the hubbub's about. We're pleased with the hefty amount of video that HBO's offering up here, and the interface is pretty intuitive as well. Still, browsing through the myriad content on the iPad's larger screen is definitely a bit more leisurely than on the iPhone's 3.5-inch counterpart. Both apps sport the same feature set, so searching for content, saving things to watch later, and blasting updates to Facebook and Twitter will work well on whichever device you choose. Argus boosts Apple stock target to $415 on iPhone, iPad
Argus Research analyst Jim Keheller has raised his price target for Apple stock from $375 to $415. The company's strong Q2 results are not reflected in its current share price, Keheller claims. As of midday Friday Apple shares are valued at about $351.

Apple planning huge Brisbane, Australia Apple Store
Apple is set to open its largest Australian Apple store in the historic MacArthur Chambers according to papers filed with Brisbane City Council. While the plans don't mention Apple by name, and in fact were filed on behalf of the MacArthur Central Shopping Centre, the details of the plans all point to an Apple store.
Among the plan highlights that suggest an Apple store are "feature stairs" ala the staircase in the 5th Avenue New York Store and "new colour scheme of shades of white." SLG 3000 macht alte Konsole auf HD Fernsehern wieder spielbar
Das Problem könnten einige kennen. Man hat noch alte Konsolen aber einen relativ neuen Fernseher mit 720p bzw. 1080p Auflösung. Das Spielen auf diesen TVs nervt aufgrund der Auflösungsdiskrepanz und schlechtem Bild. Abhilfe könnte diese kleine Kiste namens SLG 3000 bieten, die für 70 Dollar (ca. 47 Euro) zu haben ist. VoxOx releases iPhone app
I wrote about VoxOx earlier this year when I saw the Mac app at CES, and the company has now released an iPhone version that connects up to all of the various chat protocols and connections straight from your iPhone. Just like the Mac version, the iPhone app features a unified contact list, and offers access to all kinds of services, from IM and SMS to voice calls and even faxes straight in and out of the app. There's a video demo of the app online, and it's a free download, though you'll need a VoxOx account to use it.

Verizon to require location warning stickers on phones
Verizon in a response (PDF) to Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey's call for answers on phone location data said it would start putting a sticker on every phone warning that they tracked location. The removable screen notice would tell users that it could track the real world location and "associate this location data with other customer information." Subscribers would be asked to check location settings if they're concerned and to be "cautious" with apps and services.

Square encryption hinders Visa deal
Square is running into some problems with its new investment partner Visa. An executive at the mobile payments company confirmed it is re-working its system to encrypt credit card data on the fly. Square now uses a dongle that plugs into a headphone jack and an iOS application to process credit card transactions. While this system complies with industry regulations, it does not take the extra step to encrypt the credit card data.

HTC meldet im ersten Quartal 2011 erneut Rekordzahlen
HTC hat seine Geschäftszahlen für das erste Quartal 2011 (PDF) vorgelegt. Der Gewinn nach Steuern schoss demnach im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal um 196,8 Prozent auf 14,83 Milliarden Taiwan-Dollar (348 Millionen Euro). Das entspricht einem Gewinn je Aktie von 18,36 Taiwan-Dollar (43 Cent). Mit einem Plus von 174,5 Prozent erreichte der Umsatz 104,16 Milliarden Taiwan-Dollar (2,44 Milliarden Euro).

Sources claimed Friday that the iCloud name was likely what it would call its upgraded cloud services and wasn't just confined to a media locker. Android phone owners sue Google for $50m over location data
Google faced some of the backlash from the iPhone location data debate this week after a lawsuit was filed against the company over Android's location tracking. The Michigan complaint from Julie Brown and partner, a possible class action, accused Google of excessively detailed tracking. Android 2.2 on their HTC Inspire 4G phones was tracking with the level of frequency and precision of a "tracking device for which a court-ordered warrant would ordinarily be required," Brown said.

Asian iPad 2 launches greeted with long lineups
Asian launches of the iPad 2 were met with long lines on Friday, reports say. The most significant of these may be in Japan, which was first slated to get the tablet on March 25th, but had the introduction delayed because of the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit the north on March 11th. By the time Apple Japan's flagship Ginza store opened at 9AM on Friday, the iPad 2 lineup was reportedly three blocks long.

Langfristiger Umsatzrückgang durch E-Books
Wie iSuppli errechnet hat, wird der Umsatz mit klassischen Büchern langfristig sinken. Seit 2008 erfreuen sich E-Books wachsender Beliebtheit, was aber zu Kosten herkömmlicher Druckerzeugnisse geht. Jedoch werden Verlage damit wahrscheinlich auch einen Umsatzrückgang verzeichnen, denn E-Books sind bis zu 40 Prozent günstiger als ein klassisches Buch. Die Analysten rechnen daher bis 2014 mit einem jährlichen Umsatzrückgang von 3 Prozent.

Apple, Google to testify at Congressional hearing on location tracking
Senator Al Franken released a statement today thanking Apple and Google for agreeing to attend a hearing on mobile technology and privacy. According to Franken, the goal of the hearing is to "serve as a first step in investigating if federal law protecting consumer privacy-particularly when it relates to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets-is keeping pace with advances in technology."
The hearing is set for May 10 in Washington, D.C. and has the catchy title "Protecting Mobile Privacy: Your Smartphones, Tablets, Cell Phones and Your Privacy." IDC: Apple past ZTE to be 4th-largest phone maker worldwide
IDC in a roundup of final phone market share saw Apple move faster than its rivals. Its 18.65 million iPhones shipped in the winter nearly doubled its market share form year to year to give it five percent of the total cellphone market. The growth was enough to push it past ZTE, which even with fast growth from low-end Android phones in China was overtaken at 15.1 million phones and 4.1 percent share.

Sources 'confirm' Apple purchase of iCloud
Apple did in fact buy the iCloud.com domain name from Xcerion, say sources quoted by All Things Digital. Although initial word of the deal came in Thursday, its state was described as uncertain at the time, and iCloud.com is still technically registered under Xcerion's name. The ATD sources have declined to say whether or not the alleged $4.5 million pricetag is accurate.

Second source suggests Apple purchased icloud domain
Earlier this week, we reported on a circulating rumor that suggested Apple bought the icloud.com domain name. Today, All Things Digital added to that rumor with a report of its own. According to AllThingsD, "sources in position to know" have confirmed to them that Apple did buy the icloud.com domain name from Xcerion, a cloud computing company based in Sweden.
The original rumor suggested Apple paid up to $4.5 million for the domain name, but AllThingsD was unable to corroborate that figure with its source. Presumably, Apple will use this domain name for the rumored

Apple kicked off sales of the white iPhone 4 yesterday and the launch in China was marked by long lines and steady sales. Sprint reports Q1 2011 results, adds 1.1 million subscribers
It's financials time and the word hasn't always been rosy for Sprint of late, but this time the company has some good news to share. In this, the first quarter of 2011, Sprint added 1.1 million total subscribers, 846,000 of those were prepaid, the other 310,000 postpaid. Churn was down too, 4.36 for prepaid and 1.81 percent for postpaid, lowest in five years for the former and lowest ever for the latter. Operating income was $259 million on $8.3 billion in revenue, which is up three percent from this time last year, but factor in taxes, lunar landing rights, and all the other fun stuff and the company posted a net loss of $439 million.

Sean Ohlenkamp put a folder on the desktop of his wife's Mac as the gateway to expressing his sentiments on their third wedding anniversary. EarPlanes: Druckfilter für Vielflieger
Es gibt sie anscheinend schon eine ganze Weile, aber gesehen haben wir sie noch nie. EarPlanes sind kleine Ohr-Stöpsel, die versprechen den Druckausgleich in Flugzeugkabinen um einiges erträglicher zu machen, da sie den Druck filtern und eine Gleichgewicht der Verhältnisse im Ohr und im Flugzeug erzeugen. A lot of publications are adding iPads and other portable devices to their distribution chains. As a result, we're beginning to see some solutions for small- and medium-sized companies that are starting to approach the idea of offering a self-publishing solution. You can always send people a PDF, but that's really not a magazine, and it won't show up in the App Store.
One interesting product is from some former Apple employees who have started MagAppZine. You submit a PDF, and the company quickly converts it to a magazine and submits it to the App Store for you. You can see some customer examples in the App Store here.

White iPhone 4 thickness creates issue for case makers, owners
By now you've probably seen the latest spectacle to consume the white iPhone 4: it's thicker than the black model. The image above illustrates the point using a piece of lead from a mechanical pencil. So what, you say, in righteous indignation to a device that shipped ten months late. Well, the size difference creates a potential consumer issue since cases (at least the good ones) are manufactured against the tight tolerances supplied by Apple. We've confirmed ourselves, that an Incase slider that fits a black iPhone 4 just fine has to be forced into place on the new white model. TSMC vermeldet mehr Umsatz und Gewinn

Motorola verkauft 250.000 Xoom-Tablets im ersten Quartal
Motorola Mobility hat seit der Markteinführung 250.000 Exemplare seines Android-Tablets Xoom verkauft. Damit übertrifft das Unternehmen die Erwartungen von Analysten, die von 200.000 verkauften Exemplaren ausgegangen waren. Office-Sparte beschert Microsoft Gewinn- und Umsatzsteigerung
Microsoft hat im dritten Fiskalquartal (bis 31. März) einen Nettogewinn von 5,23 Milliarden Dollar (3,54 Milliarden Euro) erwirtschaftet, 31 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahresquartal. Der Überschuss je Aktie erhöhte sich von 0,36 Dollar auf 0,61 Dollar. Darin sind 0,05 Dollar aus einer Steuerrückzahlung für die Jahre 2004 bis 2006 enthalten. Die Einnahmen des Unternehmens kletterten um 13 Prozent auf 16,43 Milliarden Dollar (11,07 Milliarden Euro). Die Office-Sparte trug - nicht zuletzt durch den Start von Office 2010 - 5,25 Milliarden Dollar zum Gesamtumsatz bei.

Microsoft erstmals mit weniger Umsatz & Gewinn als Apple
Apple hat erstmals in der jüngeren Geschichte in einem Quartal mehr Umsatz und mehr Gewinn erzielt als Erz-Konkurrent Microsoft. Während Apple bereits letzte Woche die Quartalszahlen bekannt gab, folgten gestern Abend jene aus Redmond: Microsoft erwirtschaftete sich im Frühjahrsquartal 2011 (Januar bis März; für Microsoft das dritte Fiskalquartal) 5.232 Milliarden US-Dollar Gewinn, dies bei 16.428 Milliarden US-Dollar Umsatz. Tapose (Tap-o-SAY) is a project to bring the best ideas of Microsoft's defunct but intriguing dual-screen Courier project and incorporate them into an app for the iPad (and perhaps later for Android tablets) that mimics both the Courier's free-form writing support as well as its two-pane interface. Logitech's 'disappointing' Q4 results not helped by poor Revue sales; will cut price to $249

White iPhone 4 slightly thicker than black model
The extra UV coating -- or possibly other factors -- have made the white model of the iPhone 4 ever so slightly thicker than the black model, several sources have found. Today Microsoft announced their net profit for the first calendar quarter of 2011. That net profit was $5.23 billion, or $760 million dollars less than Apple's $5.99 billion net profit over the same period. Zynga buys Wonderland Software, makers of GodFinger
Zynga has added another iOS developer to its growing stable -- Wonderland Software, makers of GodFinger, the Ngmoco-published freemium title, has been purchased and rebranded as Zynga Mobile UK. Wonderland made GodFinger for Ngmoco, so that game isn't part of the buyout, but Zynga will of course use the company and its resources to build up a developer presence in the UK for both mobile and social games.

Apple rejects iOS 'Smuggle Truck' illegal immigration game
Owlchemy Labs, having had their physics-based game "Smuggle Truck" rejected by Apple, have made sufficient changes to the app for it to win approval as Snuggle Truck. The original's premise put players as the driver of a truck bringing illegal immigrants across the border; the object was to keep the immigrants from falling out of the truck as it jumped, back-flipped and bounced across the desert. The new game replaces the immigrants with animals who are being transported from the wilderness to a zoo.

Shocker! Free Android apps outnumber free iPhone apps
Good news for Android users who hate paying for stuff: according to new numbers from Netherlands-based mobile analytics group Distimo, there are now more free apps available for Google's mobile OS than the iPhone, at 134,342 to 121,845. There are a few things to consider here: first, when one adds free iPad-only apps, the total number of gratis iOS apps increases to a more competitive 132,239. Samsung broadens patent-infringement complaint against Apple
Samsung has now filed in U.S. court a countersuit against Apple similar to claims it had previously filed in Korea, Japan and Germany in reaction to an original patent-infringement suit filed by Apple, Bloomberg reports. The company claims Apple is infringing a total of 10 patents related to mobile phones. Apple had stated in its April 15th suit that Samsung's Galaxy products "slavishly" copied iPad and iPhone technology, design and even packaging. Samsung's response says it is Apple who are copying Samsung's technology without a license.

Researchers build a robot inspired by caterpillars, nightmares (video)

Logitech makes just $5m from Google TV, hints future models
Logitech was herald of wider problems with Google TV on Thursday after its winter fiscal results (PDF) revealed very low numbers. The peripheral maker made just $5 million in sales from the Revue and all its accessories. At $300 per device, the figure would have seen it ship fewer than 16,700 of the Android-based media hubs.

AKVIS retoucher 5.0 update adds Spot Remover, RAW support
AKVIS has launched an update to its photo-retouching software, releasing AKVIS Retoucher 5.0 today. It restores photos by removing dust, scratches and stains, and can reconstruct the missing parts of a photo automatically. Apple more profitable than Microsoft as netbooks plunge 40%
Microsoft on Thursday night suffered a symbolic loss as its results confirmed that Apple had beaten it for the first time in pure profit. Although Apple had already outgrown it in market cap last May and through revenue in October, its $5.99 billion net income was enough to outpace Microsoft's $5.23 billion. Apple's revenue lead was also noticeably wider, at $24.67 billion to Microsoft's $16.43 billion.

RIM warns of BlackBerry shipment, profit crash in spring
RIM signaled deep trouble with its smartphone business Thursday night with lowered guidance for its spring quarter end this May. It now expected its BlackBerry shipments to be at the "lower end" of the 13.5 million to 14.5 million it predicted March. Profit would be much lower at $1.30 to $1.37 per share instead of the expected $1.47 to $1.55 it mentioned just last month.

Ryan Cash had an opportunity to compare the new white iPhone with the more traditional black model that many of us know and love. NFL Mobile apps bring the draft to you live tonight on iPhone, iPad and Android
The first round of the 2011 NFL Draft kicks off around 8 p.m. at Radio City Music Hall but if you're not one of the players collecting racks on racks of cash (assuming there is a 2011 season of course) you can still get live updates via the NFL's apps for iOS and Android devices. The NFL GameCenter apps that have been kicking around for iPhone/iPod touch and Android phones have been updated for the 2011 season in Lite (free) and Premium ($1.99) forms, and should be able to ply on the go users with live updates and information on each pick. Instapaper's free version goes on extended hiatus, dev explains why
Marco Arment has an interesting writeup on his blog about his iOS app Instapaper (and of course the web service that runs behind it). Arment says on his blog that he's quietly been removing the free version of the app from the App Store, and that's resulted in a surprising effect: Sales of the full app have actually increased.
