Nikon's D5100 impresses, captures children's birthday parties with incredible clarity
We're not the only site to put Nikon's new mid-range DSLR through its paces. Plenty of others have taken the D5100 for a spin and we thought you might like to know: they're all pretty impressed. The new 1080p30 video mode was much appreciated as was the larger, higher resolution swivel screen around back. The biggest props generally went to the improved high-ISO performance (which was already quite respectable on the D5000 it's replacing) and the boost in autofocus speed, especially when using the LCD as a view finder in Live View mode. RIM to launch 6.1 update as BlackBerry 7 OS at BlackBerry World next week?
CrackBerry has just dropped word via "numerous sources" that RIM will be revealing the next iteration of its mobile OS at the fast approaching BlackBerry World conference -- and no, it's still not QNX. Despite consistent rumblings that upcoming devices like the Bold Touch, and Monaco would be launching with OS 6.1, it seems that RIM has decided to re-brand the update completely as BlackBerry 7, perhaps to increase the value proposition and differentiate new devices being announced along with it. Verizon has 'determined the cause' of LTE outage, working to restore service
Yeah, we know, 3G data is so last year. If you've already made the jump to LTE and are totally bummed about today's outage, know that there's a fix coming. We have an official statement from Jeffrey Nelson from VZW Corporate Communications, who indicates that the company has "determined the cause of our issue" and is "working with our major vendors to restore connections." We're guessing that doesn't actually mean plugging something back in, but maybe it does. The full statement is after the break, but what you won't find is an ETA on when things will be live again.

Pioneer registers with the FCC for AppRadio
It seems like just the other day we were chatting with Pioneer about its interfaces for iPhones in the car, and sure enough, it seems the company has plans for even more integration between its in-car units and Apple's smartphone. A filing with the FCC has revealed something Pioneer is calling the AppRadio, which appears to be an in-dash unit that will hook up with apps on the iPhone, essentially turning your smartphone into the backend of your car's radio system.
Details on what the device does are slim, but presumably this will do what Pioneer's other devices have done and hook into iPhone app

Square Enix working on two followups to Chaos Rings, Imaginary Range comic
Square Enix has announced three different iOS products in the pipeline for later on this year in both Japan and eventually the US. First up, original iOS title Chaos Rings is apparently getting not one but two different followup titles. The first will be called Chaos Rings Omega, and it will apparently be a prequel (shouldn't it be called Alpha, then?), with the story set before the first game begins. Square Enix has also placed ads in a Japanese gaming magazine for a full-fledged "Chaos Rings II" sequel, though information on that is slim so far. Video: GarageBand auf dem iPhone
Apple’s GarageBand, das ursprünglich für den Mac entwickelt wurde und mit dem iPad 2 auch für jenes vorgestellt wurde, war bisher noch nie auf einem iPhone ausgeführt worden. Nun aber hat ein Leser von 9to5Mac ein Video eingesendet, in dem er eine gehackte Version von GarageBand auf seinem gejailbreakten iPhone 4 zeigt. Klar, die Skalierung ist nicht allzu optimal, immerhin wurde dieses GarageBand für ein Seitenverhältnis von 4:3 und eine Auflösung von 1024 zu 768 Pixeln entwickelt, beides ist beim iPhone nicht vorhanden. Dennoch läuft die App verhältnismäßig gut, allerdings läuft nicht alles. Das Video gibt’s hier:

Apple hardware VP sells 99% of AAPL holdings
Apple's senior vice president of Mac and iPhone hardware engineering, Bob Mansfield, has sold 99% of his Apple holdings, leaving him with only 501 shares left. The news comes from a recent SEC Form 4 filing which lists Mansfield selling 38,863 shares of AAPL at $351.89 each; total proceeds from the sale are in excess of $13.6 million.
There are two things to take away from Mansfield's sale:

The saga of the Notion Ink Adam is a tale like many we could name -- it's the story of a tiny company struggling to bring a vision to market, facing friction from investors, factories and the march of time itself. The difference is that the Adam captured the imaginations of gadget fiends like ourselves with ideas that were fantastic from day one and are still novel now that it's finally been released, including a paneled UI, full USB host functionality, and of course that Pixel Qi screen. MacLegion bundle focuses on utility, value

LG Optimus Big brings a 4.3-inch NOVA display and 1GHz dual-core to the superphone party
What's big, mostly white, and set for a Korean launch tomorrow? That's right, the LG Optimus Big! This 4.3-inch whopper, LG's largest handset to date, touts a 1GHz dual-core processor, a slightly skinned Android 2.2 as its OS, HDMI output, a 5 megapixel camera, and 16GB of bult-in storage. YouTube seals deals with major studios to compete with iTunes
Google-owned YouTube plans to expand the premium on-demand video rental services offered through its website.
Earlier this week, Google and YouTube reportedly closed deals with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Brothers, Universal, and Lionsgate to offer filmed content from these studios as streaming rentals -- including access to new releases the same day as competing movie-on-demand services. YouTube's new service is expected to compete with market leaders in the online video rental market: Apple and Amazon.

Apple: iPad 2 ab dieser Woche in Japan, Korea, Hongkong & 9 weiteren Ländern erhältlich
Apple hat heute mittels einer Pressemitteilung bekannt gegeben, dass die zweite Generation des iPads ab dieser Woche in zwölf weiteren Ländern erhältlich sein wird. So wird man es ab morgen in Japan und ab übermorgen in Hongkong, Korea und neun weiteren Ländern kaufen können. Weiterhin wird zumindest die WiFi-Variante ab dem 6. Mai in China erhältlich sein. Zusammen mit dem Tablet kommen vermutlich auch das Smart Cover in allen Farben und beiden Varianten und der neue Apple Digital AV Adapter in den dortigen Verkauf.

Rogers announces 150Mbps LTE launch in four Canadian cities this year
Rogers has announced it's lighting up 150Mbps LTE in four Canadian cities this year. Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver are setting the stage for an additional 21 market rollout in 2012. Apple could survive on current cash alone until 2018
During the 2Q 2011 Apple Results Call last Wednesday, we listened with rapt attention as the number for "Cash and Cash Equivalents" figure was announced. The number, as you may recall, was US$65.8 Billion. One question that many of us always ask is "What could Apple do with that money?"
Asymco analyst Horace Dediu always provides fascinating insights, and in a post yesterday he not only did a breakdown of the sources of that cash, but did some comparisons just to show how huge the cash stash is. The pile of simoleons is made of "only" $15 Billion in cash, about $14 Billion in short-term marketable securities, and the rest -- about $37 Billion -- in long-term marketable securities.

Comcast is first with VOD from all four major networks, still negotiating for early release movies
Starting Thursday, Comcast will add TV shows from ABC and Fox to its video on-demand library, making it the only provider that offers shows from all four broadcast networks (including NBC and CBS) as soon as the day after they air. White iPhone delay partly due to UV protection
In an interview with Ina Fried at AllThingsD, Phil Schiller and Steve Jobs gave a little insight into what made the white iPhone 4 so tough to produce. Actually, it wasn't really the manufacturing itself, but the materials science needed to make sure the white iPhone was in every way as capable and durable as the black-painted iPhone 4.

Square gets the backing of credit card giant Visa
Mobile payment startup Square confirmed it received a strategic investment from Visa. Square produces a credit card reader that connects to the headphone jack of an iPhone, iPad or other mobile platform. The Square application on the device accepts the credit card information from the reader and processes the payment on the fly. Apple building 'crowd-sourced traffic' service for iPhone users
An interesting bit of information has come out from Apple's announcement today addressing the location-tracking controversy. Apparently Apple is working on a crowd-sourced traffic service for iPhone users. From the press release:

TomTom user data sold to Dutch police, used to determine ideal locations for speed traps
We like it when the accumulated speed data from GPS devices helps us avoid traffic incidents and school zones. As it turns out, though, there are some other uses for the same stats. Dutch news outlet AD is reporting that such data captured by TomTom navigation devices has been purchased by the country's police force and is being used to determine where speed traps and cameras should be placed. Lethal Pro v2 review
A name like "Lethal Pro" invariably creates a certain set of expectations. Namely, that the product in question is suitable for professional use, and that it least looks like it's potentially lethal. White iPhone proximity sensor, death grip tested on video
You don't have to watch the two videos after the break if you don't want to -- we'll just tell you that Italy's iSpazio blog tested the white iPhone's proximity sensor and "death grip" antenna seam issue, and that, surprise, they're both fine. The proximity sensor seems to work a little better than that on my black iPhone 4 (based on observations of this video), and while the "death grip" on the iPhone 4's antenna does make it lose a bar, reception is unaffected. So don't worry.
The bigger question is why the white iPhone 4 took so long to arrive. We've heard Apple was working to improve the proximity sensor and antenna. Also, there may have

ARM steigert erneut Umsatz und Gewinn
ARM hat seine Unternehmensergebnis für das vergangene Quartal bekannt gegeben. Aus den Zahlen wird deutlich, dass sich der Markt für Smartphones und Tablets weiter im Aufwind befindet. Google Docs gets an Android app, lets you capture text with your phone's camera
Google's had a mobile-friendly version of Google Docs available for some time now, but it's now finally gone the extra step and released a dedicated Android app. That will of course let you access and edit your documents on your smartphone, but the real standout feature is the ability to capture text with your phone's camera and have it instantly made editable thanks to some optical character recognition. Dieser Tweet eines angeblichen Samsung-Mitarbeiters befeuert die Gerüchteküche, denn er scheint mit seinem Nexus S auf dem schon Gingerbread 2.3.4 läuft native Videotelefonie machen zu können, noch dazu in "beeindruckender Qualität". Eigentlich wäre es ja auch mal an der Zeit, dass Android Videotelefonie lernt, und Google I/O 2011 steht ja nun auch im Mai an, passt also alles irgendwie ganz gut zusammen.

This wouldn't be the first time a company repackages old routers for the new year, but to be fair, there haven't been many technological advances recently for them to do much else. Mit ein bisschen gutem Willen kann man dabei mitgehen, obwohl natürlich ein Schnabel irgendwie noch keinen Angry Bird macht Nett ist die Idee trotzdem, insbesondere wenn man sich vor Augen führt, dass die Shang-Dynastie vom 16. Der Designer John Greg Ball hat seinen Subsonic Chair bereits vor 6 Jahren entworfen, fertig ist das Lärmmöbel allerdings immer noch nicht wirklich - wenn es das denn jemals werden soll. Ball tüftelt jedenfalls noch immer an Verbesserungen des Konzepts, inzwischen gemeinsam mit seinen Studenten der polytechnischen Hochschule in Calgary. The sordid affair blew up when a pair of researchers published a report that revealed Apple was storing months worth of location data on the iPhone and 3G iPad. Firefox 4 received quite a bit of fanfare when it finally rolled out of beta. Die meisten Hacker-Attacken kommen aus Russland
Russland hat die USA im letzten Quartal 2010 als Ursprungsland von Hackerattacken überholt. Das ist im Bericht "State of the Internet" von Akamai Technologies, einem Anbieter von Webbeschleunigungsdiensten, nachzulesen. Für den Bericht hat Akamai die Daten von Hunderten Millionen Webverbindungen ausgewertet, die über die Server des Unternehmens hergestellt werden. Danach kamen 12 Prozent des von Akamai beobachteten Angriffs-Traffics aus Russland, 7,3 Prozent aus den USA. Die Vereinigten Staaten fielen damit auf Platz fünf weltweit zurück. Vor den USA liegen Taiwan mit 7,6 Prozent des Angriffs-Traffics, Brasilien mit 7,5 Prozent und China mit 7,4 Prozent.

Com2Us is a Korean publisher that's produced some quality iPhone titles, and its latest release, Third Blade, keeps that trend going. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of original iPhone gameplay here (it's a traditional beat-em-up, though there are some nice RPG elements as you go), but while the actual game style is pretty well traveled, the action is well-done anyway. With an on-screen analog control and three different blade types that you can use to hack and slash through the well-rendered enemies, there's plenty of fun to be had, especially if you're up for a relatively hardcore action experience.

iTunes Cloud-Service nimmt allmählich Form an
Schon seit über einem Jahr wird über einen Cloud-Service zum Verwalten der iTunes-Library spekuliert. Wie CNET nun berichtet, hat Apple die Arbeiten an einem entsprechenden Dienst bereits vollendet, befindet sich aber noch in Vertragsverhandlungen mit den Musiklabels.
Der Cloud-Dienst soll es ermöglichen, die eigene Musiksammlung online zu speichern und von überall her darauf Zugriff zu haben. Damit wäre es künftig nicht mehr nötig, seine Musik vom Mac auf ein iPhone, iPad oder einen iPod zu kopieren. Angeblich hatte Apple ursprünglich vor, den Dienst kostenlos anzubieten (oder als Bestandteil von MobileMe), damit scheinen die Labels jedoch nicht einverstanden gewesen zu sein. Der AppStore für das iPhone und Co umfasst mittlerweile 350.000 Applikationen. Nokia's already done quite a bit to cut ties with last year's big push for Symbian and Qt development, though this is perhaps the biggest step yet. Amazon verpasst Gewinnerwartungen trotz steigendem Umsatz
Amazon hat im ersten Quartal 2011 9,86 Milliarden Dollar (6,7 Milliarden Euro) umgesetzt. Gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum erhöhten sich die Einnahmen um 38 Prozent. Google: Smartphones are pervasive, effective ad platforms
A new study from Google and Ipsos/OTX shows that smartphones have become ubiquitous and indispensable to those who use them, with web activity and shopping assistance being two of the primary uses. The study also found that ads plus the always-connected, always-present smartphones make an effective marketing team: 71 percent of web searches on smartphones come from exposure to an ad of some kind, with 82 percent saying they notice mobile display ads and half saying they take some kind of action (either visiting a website or making a purchase) as a result of the ads.

Amazon responds to Apple's 'App Store' lawsuit
In March Apple filed a lawsuit against Amazon ,alleging the Internet giant had violated Apple's trademark by using the term "App Store" in its Android-based Amazon Appstore. "Amazon has unlawfully used the App Store mark to solicit software developers throughout the United States," Apple said in a statement, and noted that they tried contacting Amazon several times about the infringement but Amazon repeatedly failed to "provide a substantive response."

Academy members get screeners through iTunes
Here's an interesting note that's not exactly new, but might be news to a lot of movie fans anyway: Apple apparently has been passing out movie screeners for Oscar voters via iTunes. That fact came to light in an FBI raid earlier this week chasing down a man who allegedly uploaded illegal copies of movies like The King's Speech and Black Swan to pirate filesharing services. Among the documents in the case were a few comments on bittorrent site The Pirate Bay, where the suspect allegedly identified himself as an Academy member, and said that "SAG now sends out iTunes download codes for screens." Apple lays out $11 billion in purchase commitments
Many out there think Apple should go on an acquisition spree with its $65.8 billion in cash. Others think that Apple should issue a dividend to its shareholders. ReQuest claims it owns patents for media sync
Media server maker ReQuest is hoping to profit off of the work media device makers with threats of a possible patent lawsuit over media syncing, one company revealed after getting a notice letter. A copy obtained this week shows that the Ballston Spa, New York-based firm has been reaching out to companies claiming that they may be using two patents for automatically syncing music, photos, and videos. Survey: Developer interest in iOS highest and growing
Nielsen may be reporting that Android is growing in desire among consumers, but for developers, iOS is still the platform of choice. A survey by Appcelerator with help from IDC says that developers still favor iOS for making their mobile apps. 91% of devs surveyed said that they were "very interested" in making apps for iPhone, and 86% of those surveyed would like to make apps for iPad. Dell's new powerhouse Precision M4600 and M6600 workstation laptops on sale May 10
We got a dose of details on Dell's new Precision M4600 and M6600 workstations yesterday, and though impressed by their specs, we were left without answers to two very important questions: when can we get them, and how much will they cost? There must be some mind readers in Round Rock, because today Dell revealed that the machines will make their debut on May 10 with prices starting at $1,678 for the M4600 and $2,158 for its 17-inch big brother, though prices surely escalate quickly from there. Homer Simpson comes to the Tom Tom app
The voice of cartoon character Homer Simpson, as performed by actor Dan Castellaneta, is now available as an in-app purchase in Tom Tom's US-based GPS apps for the iPhone right now. For $5.99, you too can have Homer say "[Annoyed Grunt]" when you make a wrong turn, or "Woo hoo!" when you reach your destination. Pricey? Maybe so, but considering the apps already cost about $50 (not to mention a subscription charge for other services), you're all-in anyway, right?

Rogers, Virgin Mobile show white iPhone 4 imminent
Canadian carriers joined in revealing plans for the white iPhone 4 this week as a pair of discoveries have pointed to the new color coming in. At least one Virgin Mobile store was already getting a "box load," while Rogers was sending an internal memo that was letting stores make orders but couldn't yet sell them, MobileSyrup said.

TapJoy alters marking strategy to comply with App Store changes
Down but not out, TapJoy confirmed to AllThingsD that it is modifying its incentivized purchases to work within Apple's new ranking system and to ensure its apps will make their way into the App Store.
Last week, Apple made changes in its app store ranking system that downplayed the ranking of apps, and reviewers even rejected some apps that include cross-application marketing programs. The largest company affected by these changes was TapJoy, a social and mobile game distribution network that offers these "incentivized purchases."

Apple reportedly selects Sharp for next-gen LCDs
The iPhone 5 hasn't even made it into the hands of the Apple faithful, and already we're hearing hints of what the display of the iPhone 6 could be like.
Apple has chosen Sharp to supply low-temperature poly-silicon (p-Si) LCDs for the displays, and the Japanese manufacturer will reportedly begin production of the screens in the Spring of 2012. The displays are to be built in the Sharp Kameyama Plant No. 1, which is currently used to build LCD TVs.

Windows Phone and BlackBerry struggle to attract developer attention
We're taking this with a grain of salt, since it applies only to users of the cross-platform Appcelerator Titanium development environment, but it appears that Windows Phone 7 is facing an increasingly uphill battle for mobile mind-share. At this point it should go without saying that a platform lives and dies by its developers and, according to Appcelerator, they're growing less and less interested in creating apps for Microsoft's smartphone OS. Only 29-percent of devs responded to the company's quarterly survey that they were "very interested" in putting their wares on WP7, a fall of 7 points

Rumor: Apple's cloud service comes with subscription fee
CNET has heard from "music industry insiders" that Apple's long-rumored cloud service is indeed coming, but with a subscription fee. When it first launches, the service, which supposedly will act as a "music locker," allowing you to store and access a music collection in the cloud, may be available free of charge. But the plan is to eventually charge for it, and most estimations (also known as guesses) are falling in the $20 a year range.
We'll have to see how this all plays out -- Google also reportedly is working on a service like this, but of course the details are still up in the air. And it remains
