Sony Computer Entertainment hat endlich bekannt geben können, was der oder die Hacker im Playstation Network (PSN) und in Qriocity angerichtet haben. Auch für die Kunden ist der Einbruch in die Server ein Desaster - es wurden alle angegebeben persönlichen Daten kopiert, wahrscheinlich auch die für Kreditkarten. (Security, Internet)

iPhoto 9.1.2 released
Along with the Snow Leopard Font Upgrade, iPhoto 9.1.2 has just shown up in Software Update. Outside of the usual bug squashing, it brings a few new features and tweaks including new card themes and some enhancements to making photo books. Here's what you'll find in this sizable update:
o. Addresses an issue that prevented the Zoom slider from being accessible in Magnify (1-Up) view
o. Fixes an issue where Toolbars were not auto-hiding in Full Screen view

Nikon D5100 gets the iFixit teardown treatment, camera status confirmed
We've seen plenty of tablets go under the spudger at the iFixit teardown labs, but seldom has a DSLR been gently gutted and photographed for all to see. Today's victim is the $900 Nikon D5100, which just hit stores last week. DARPA's new Space Surveillance Telescope will keep our satellites safe from interstellar debris
What's that in the sky? A bird? A plane? Oh, it's just some junk floating around in space, posing major threats to our military's spy satellites. To help keep an eye on it, engineers at DARPA, MIT and the Air Force have unleashed a new $110 million telescope that's been in the works for nine years now. The new Space Surveillance Telescope (SST) is capable of delivering wide-angle views of the Earth's firmament thanks to a curved CCD. This allows for a massive 3.5m aperture and f/1.0 exposure settings, capturing more light in a day that your average scope can in a week. Apple posts iPhoto 9.1.2, Snow Leopard font update
Apple has released a pair of software updates, most notably iPhoto 9.1.2. The patch adds new card themes, but primarily makes a number of bugfixes as well as some interface improvements. Apple just released the Snow Leopard Font Update. This fix addresses bugs encountered with OpenType fonts when displaying and printing documents. According to Apple, the bug fix will
Address an issue in which some OpenType fonts don't display correctly in certain applications
Resolve issues printing from Preview
Address an issue with PDF files not opening in third-party PDF viewing applications
Resolve invalid font errors when printing to PostScript printers

Fox, Paramount may skip YouTube due to lack of piracy curbs
Fox and Paramount have supposedly backed out of YouTube's imminent major movie service in an attempt to force action on piracy. Unofficial comments from the two claim that they won't get onboard as long as Google is indexing pirate video sites in its search engine and allowing them AdSense placement. News: Amazon responds in ‘App Store’ lawsuit, requests dismissal

I saw that you posted (in your secret other identity) that you've ordered a Region 4 DVD of "The Almighty Johnsons" from Mighty Ape in New Zealand and will be watching it on your Mac.
Last time I checked, I read that Macintoshes locked themselves to whatever DVD region you first inserted. How are you planning to watch Region 4? Do you use a region-free DVD player? Or is another way to override Apple's region restrictions?

Amazon asks for dismissal in Apple App Store lawsuit
Amazon has filed a formal response to Apple's App Store lawsuit, reports say. The online retailer is requesting that a federal judge in San Francisco throw out the case, on the basis that the term "app store" is generic, and therefore not something Apple can claim as exclusive. Apple's own CEO, Steve Jobs, has undermined attempts to make the term proprietary, the filing points out.

iFixIt releases transparent iPhone 4 rear panel
If you like to see the innards of your handset, then you have to check out this latest offering from iFixit. The repair company known for its detailed teardown analyses has released a transparent rear panel for the GSM/AT&T iPhone 4. Unfortunately, the Verizon iPhone 4 has a slightly different shape and these panels will not fit the Verizon model.
The clear panel lets you peer into the logic board and gawk at the large battery that dominates the back of the handset. Apple's iTunes cloud locker may eventualy carry a fee
Apple's iTunes cloud music plans might not necessarily be free to use, contacts in the music business hinted Tuesday. They stopped short of claiming to know the pricing but heard it could be free to use at first and incur a fee later. Windows Phone 7 nears 15,000 apps, accelerates
New statistics have suggested that Windows Phone 7 is near crossing the 15,000 app mark but is also seeing its catalog accelerate quickly. WP7applist as of Tuesday afternoon showed 14,946 apps having been added in the half-year since WP7's October 2010 launch, about 955 of which were no longer active. The rate could see it reach 15,000 active apps by the end of the month.

Nielsen says Android is "most desired smartphone"
Nielsen released its early 2011 survey numbers and the results suggest Android popularity is on the rise and iOS is declining in the US. In this latest consumer survey, Android edges out the iPhone as the most desired smartphone platform.
When asking respondents about the next handset they intend to buy, 31.1% said they would purchase an Android device, while 30% said they wanted an iPhone. This is a 5.6 percentage point increase for Android which climbed from 25.5% and a 2.7 percentage point decline for iOS which was previously at 32.7%. This earlier survey was taken between July 2010 to September 2010.
Interestingly enough, this decline in iOS occurred even though Apple expanded its presence in the US by launching the Verizon iPhone. This early result sugg

We already knew HP had a home run on its hands with the Pavilion dm1z, the first notebook to hit the market with AMD's long-awaited Fusion platform. Well, it looks like consumers agreed, and the company's chomping at the bit to duplicate that winning formula for the business crowd. HP's quietly taken the veil off the 3105m, another 11.6-inch laptop packing AMD's dual-core 1.6GHz E-350 Zacate CPU and Radeon HD 6310 graphics. Apple seeks 'Startup' trademark, plans Galleria store move
Apple has filed for a US trademark on the term "Startup," a report notes. A Jamaican trademark was actually filed in October 2010, most likely as a way of claiming priority when applying in the US. As the trademark would cover several categories -- retail stores, maintenance and installation of hardware and software, educational services and technical support -- the name is thought to be related to expanded training and setup services that have been in play at Apple Stores since earlier this year.

Debian-Nutzerin erhält offenbar gefälschte Filesharing-Abmahnung
Offenbar erhalten Personen, die sich in den vergangenen Wochen die freie Software Debian 5 über Bittorrent heruntergeladen haben, derzeit Abmahnungen wegen illegalen Filesharings. Handy-Konzept Ensemble ist mächtig Sci-Fi

Der Jungdesigner Jerome Olivet hat ein Handy-Konzept entworfen, das - tscha - irgendwie anders aussieht. Am ehesten vielleicht noch wie ein High-End-Lautsprecher von der Sorte, die sich kein Mensch leisten kann. Nur eben kleiner. Bedient wird das Ensemble getaufte Gerät in erster Linie per Spracherkennung, das Mini-Display soll wohl nur als Fallback-Variante dienen, wenn der Nutzer zu arg ins Nuscheln kommt. Wir sind trotzdem erstmal beeindruckt, auch wenn wir nicht sagen können warum.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 leaks, takes second stab at MacBook Air
Lenovo's decision to back out on the ThinkPad X301 may have just been a temporary measure as a pair of Swiss stores have prematurely shown a sequel built more consciously to take on the new MacBook Air. Billed as the ThinkPad X1, it would switch to a 160GB solid-state state drive to slim down to about 0.85 inches at its thickest point. The system would try to bring over Lenovo's reputation for strong designs by making its 13.3-inch display cover out of jab- and scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass.

Sony chairman and CD pioneer Norio Ohga dies
Instrumental former Sony chairman and president Norio Ohga died on Saturday of multiple organ failure at the age of 81. The executive, initially trained as an opera singer, was best known for having led the team that along with Philips helped develop the CD in 1980. Its 74-minute running time was famously developed to meet Ohga's goal of putting all of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on a single disc and helped grow a market for long albums.

Lenovo's plans for Android tablets beyond the Le Pad should take it into professional models based on a leaked presentation from Sunday. Called the ThinkPad Tablet, it would be the first known Lenovo slate with Android 3.0 and would make software customizations beyond just including the PC builder's already known Family UI interface. Acer allegedly replacing netbook orders with 500,000 tablets
Acer's shift to mobile may have taken an immediate effect on its production, part supplier insiders said Monday. Orders for its Aspire One netbooks are supposedly being gradually replaced with its Iconia Tab models this month, with the A500 now on sale at Best Buy. South Korea adds to governments investigating iOS security
The Korea Communications Commission is now probing for possible legal violations by Apple in regard to iOS 4, says Bloomberg. Concern revolves around the location history file recently made public at Where 2.0. The KCC has requested that Apple explain how often location data is collected and saved, and whether or not the public has a choice to save or delete it. Acer may trump Apple with very thin LG Shuriken notebook LCD
LCD display makers claimed Monday that Acer was planning to claim an edge in the ultraportable space by using the same display technology behind the LG Xnote P210. An unnamed notebook from the company would use LG Display's new ultra-compact Shuriken LCD to get a 14-inch screen into a 13.3-inch frame. The design identified to Digitimes would cut the bezel thickness by a third, to 0.31 inches, and make the entire panel just 0.16 inches thick.

RealNetworks' Rinse cleans up iTunes libraries [U]
[Updated: Program officially announced] A new program called Rinse, developed by RealNetworks, claims to be able to automatically correct song titles, add album art, and remove duplicate tracks from an iTunes library. Apple posts unprecedented $11B in Q2 purchase committments
Apple has made its largest-ever sequential increase in purchase commitments for a March quarter, notes Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. A rumor Monday has suggested Apple might have a truly universal iPhone model for its 2011 update. An admittedly uncertain but atypical set of photos Monday have given possible support to the idea of an iPhone with a larger screen. Two shots show a design with the same overall dimensions as the iPhone 4 but with a screen running much closer to the edge. New WebM license group tries to safeguard against lawsuits
The WebM Project took a defensive measure on Monday with the creation of the WebM Community Cross-License. The approach will see 17 companies and groups give licenses to any WebM-related patents they have to other CCL members. Google, Matroska, and Xiph.org form the core but are joined by AMD, Cisco, Huawei, LG, Logitech, MIPS, Mozilla, Opera, Pantech, Quanta, Samsung, STMicro, TI, and Verisilicon.

The next-generation MacBook Pro will use a substantially different case design, according to "reliable confirmation" received by MacRumors. Externally the notebook has remained mostly unchanged since 2008, when the first aluminum unibody models were released. Netflix ties with Comcast for largest US subcription service
Netflix reached a milestone in its winter 2011 results (PDF) as it tied with Comcast to become the largest subscription service in the US. The movie rental and streaming firm added 3.3 million new customers between January and March to hit 22.8 million users, or exactly as many customers as the cable TV giant. Its expansion gave it a 63 percent leap in total subscribers just over the same period last year and nearly double the growth rate.

Lawsuit challenges Apple over iOS location tracking
A lawsuit has been filed against Apple regarding location tracking on iPhones and 3G iPads, according to Bloomberg. Two customers have reportedly filed a federal complaint in Tampa, Florida, alleging privacy invasion and computer fraud. More details of the case should emerge in the near future.

iFixit crafts ready-made transparent iPhone 4 back
iFixit introduced a still-rare product of its own on Monday through a transparent iPhone 4 case. The back, currently only for GSM models, gives those comfortable with voiding the warranty and replacing the back a way of showing the "sweet innards" of the phone without affecting its performance. The new material is also clear plastic rather than glass, making it less prone to shattering and cheaper to replace if it breaks without hurting the phone inside.

Apple releases fix for boot issues in current iMacs
Owners of the current model of iMac -- the "mid-2010" models featuring 21.5- and 27-inch screens -- will be getting a firmware update via Software Update to fix what Apple calls "a hard drive issue that may prevent some iMac (21.5-inch and 27-inch, Mid 2010) systems from booting properly." The issue is exclusive to the mid-2010 models, and the update requires the latest version of OS X, 10.6.7. The update is 767KB in size and can also be downloaded directly from here.

Yahoo buys IntoNow for as much as $30m?
Yahoo has just completed a deal to purchase relative software newcomer IntoNow for between $20 and $30 million, TechCrunch reported on Monday. The company has been around for just 12 weeks and was said to also be considered for purchase by Twitter and Facebook. The company's sole product so far is an app for Apple's iPhone devices that will listen to the TV program users are watching, identify it, and share the update with other users.

Best Buy tip shows white AT&T, Verizon iPhone 4 due April 27
One more source on Monday night has helped back suspicions that the white iPhone 4 would reach Best Buy on April 27. The inventory system shows both AT&T and Verizon models in either capacity by using placeholder names such as "BBY63LD" but putting them in the "iPhone hardware" category. BGR lacked pricing, though it's broadly assumed the color won't change the pricing.

Kodak has just debuted a new All-In-One inkjet printer, the ESP Office 2170 AiO. Illinois Attorney General sends letter to Apple, Google
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has sent letters to both Apple and Google inquiring about the location data its mobile OSes are collecting, including how long the data is stored and for what purposes. Franken to hold hearing: Apple, Google confirmed
Democratic Senator Al Franken, in a follow-up to his letter to Apple asking about the recently-revealed log of general user locations cached on 3G-enabled iOS devices, will hold a hearing on May 10th looking into the overall practice of how mobile OS companies collect, store and handle consumer data, AppleInsider reports. Iximix offers iOS control of Traktor Pro DJ software
A company called Iximix has debuted an iOS app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch -- TrakPro DJ -- that allows DJs to control Native Instruments' Traktor Pro software in a much more tactile fashion than is possible on a computer. The software, compatible with both Mac and Windows versions, re-casts the Traktor controls as touch controls with extremely low latency (1-3ms) and connected via Coremidi networking technology to ensure an instantaneous response. YouTube may launch major movie service as soon as this week
YouTube's largely public plans for a major studio movie service could be realized as soon as this week or next, studio executives purportedly said Monday. The service would initially work through a video-on-demand rental system, presumably streaming, rather than permanent sales. Improviso acting game comes to Mac OS X
One month after the Windows release, the MIT Media Lab and the Singapore-based MIT Gambit Game Lab has released Improviso, a free online improv game that puts players into a low-budget sci-fi movie to help develop better artificial intelligence (AI) for future games. Nielsen: Android up to 37 percent in US, iPhone steady at 27
Android has reached a new high in US market share but almost entirely at the BlackBerry's expense, Nielsen said on Tuesday. Google was now up to 37 percent share from 29 percent just in the fall. All of that came from RIM supporters defecting to the platform, though, as BlackBerry use fell five points to 22 percent while the iPhone remained steady at 27 percent.

Developer interest stays high for iOS, declines for Android
Interest in iOS development remains high, while Android has lost some ground, according to a survey on the mobile app industry by IDC and Appcelerator. 91 percent of developers say they're "very interested" in iPhone/iPod development; 86 percent say they're very interested in the iPad. The attraction to Android smartphone development has meanwhile dropped two points to 85 percent. Android tablet interest is down three points, sitting at 71 percent.

A Belgian retailer, Van Roey, notes that it has received its first shipment, as evidenced by boxes with the white phone on the front. Sharp said making LTPS LCDs for 2012 iPhones
Rumors of Sharp's involvement in the long term for iPhone displays were revived again Tuesday with assertions in Japan's Nikkan paper that it would be making displays for the 2012 iPhone. Its design would use low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) LCDs that would use polycrystalline silicon to slim down by mounting the display driver hardware on the glass itself. The lower required temperature also improves the power consumption, AppleInsider noted, and the higher aperture ratio produces a richer image.

Nexus S 4G launch on Sprint now official: May 8th for $200
You've been able to pre-order the Sprint-ified version of the Nexus S for a good while now, but it's always good to add a concrete date for the end of the anticipation and the beginning of the Android 2.3 fun. That date has now been officially marked as May 8th. That's when your Pure Google device will be ready for use and abuse, though you'll have to accept the usual two-year commitment with Sprint and pay up the typical $200 entry fee. Apple entwickelt komplett neues MacBook Pro
Die aktuellen MacBook-Pro-Modelle könnten die letzten Apple-Notebooks im herkömmlichen Unibody-Gehäusedesign sein, welches Apple seit 2008 verwendet. Dies berichtet MacRumors mit Verweis auf zuverlässige Quellen. Demzufolge arbeitet Apple an einem komplett neuen Gehäusedesign für das MacBook Pro. Erwartet wird ein deutlich schlankeres und vermutlich auch leichteres Gehäuse. Ähnlich wie schon beim MacBook Air könnte Apple das optische Laufwerk streichen und die Festplatte durch ein Solid State Drive ersetzen. Denkbar wäre auch ein Verzicht auf austauschbare Speichermodule, lassen sich die Geräte ja ohnehin schon seit Jahren nur noch sehr begrenzt aufrüsten.
Bis zum Erscheinen einer neuen MacBook-Pro-Generation dürfte allerdings noch einige Zeit verstreichen, sind doch die aktuellen Modelle erst wenige Monate alt.

AMD verdoppelt Gewinn im ersten Quartal
AMD hat im ersten Geschäftsquartal 2011 (bis 2. April) seinen GAAP-Nettogewinn fast verdoppelt. Gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum erhöhte sich der Überschuss um 98 Prozent auf 510 Millionen Dollar (351 Millionen Euro). Der Umsatz kletterte lediglich um 2,5 Prozent auf 1,61 Milliarden Dollar (1,1 Milliarden Euro). Der Non-GAAP-Gewinn von 0,08 Dollar je Aktie liegt deutlich über der Prognose von Analysten, die mit 0,03 Dollar je Aktie gerechnet hatten.

iTunes versions older than 10.0 now incompatible with iTunes Store
A 9to5Mac tipster has discovered that Apple is apparently not officially supporting the iTunes Store for older G3 iMacs and any Macs that need to run older versions of iTunes. This isn't really surprising; if Apple won't support software for those older computers, it's unlikely that the company would bother to make sure its store was compatible with them. But what's interesting here is that it's only the store that's incompatible. As you can see from the screenshot above, the rest of the old iTunes 8.2.1 works as expected.

YouTube ready to start renting video on-demand movies from major studios?
According to entertainment website The Wrap, Google's YouTube has finally locked up all the studio deals to get itself fully into the online movie rental game. Researchers build synthetic synapse circuit, prosthetic brains still decades away
Building a franken-brain has long been a holy grail of sorts for scientists, but now a team of engineering researchers have made what they claim to be a significant breakthrough towards that goal. Alice Parker and Chongwu Zhou of USC used carbon nanotubes to create synthetic synapse circuits that mimic neurons, the basic building blocks of the brain. We're one day late on this one, but rather than brightly colored hidden eggs for Easter, in this case we're of course referring to "easter eggs," little secrets that programmers hide in their applications and code. Macworld has a great roundup of four easter eggs hidden in popular App Store apps, from a secret edition of the 1926 Kelly Blue Book in the official Kelly app to the funny result you get when searching for "tilt" in Mobile Safari.

Concept case would turn your iPhone into a Leica
OK, so yes, this Leica i9 case for the iPhone 4 is still just a concept. You can't actually buy a case yet that fits around your iPhone and turns it into a Leica camera (though you can buy some nice lenses or an audio tape case). But this idea is just too cool to pass up.
