BlackBerry Storm's clickable screen (and the rest of it) dissected, exposed
So you've read our extensive BlackBerry Storm review and, despite feeling disappointment about it not living up to the hype, can't help but wonder just what makes the thing tick click . While we were a bit too squeamish to rip one of ours apart and find out, phoneWreck felt no qualms about turning this week's hottest handset into a pile of bits, exposing (among numerous other things) the Qualcomm MSM7600 processor that's blamed for the phone's sluggish performance. As to how the clicky screen works, it's rather simple: just a plate behind the display (pictured above) wit

Dell's Core i7-packin' Studio XPS hits the review bench
Dell's Studio XPS had "winner" written all over it from the get-go. With practically every other Core i7 rig on the market catering specifically to gamers who were willing to pay a premium for an equally cutting edge GPU, this machine directed itself to everyone who just wanted to do everything but game (and do so quickly). The kids over at DesktopReview were able to take the sub-$1,000 box for a spin, and while they weren't too fond of the relatively plain chassis, it was pretty much thumbs-up everywhere

MacBook slows down when you run without battery, rioting ensues
We're not sure exactly why this matters. We guess in two-three years when your battery is pretty much dead, this could be a concernbut apparently, running your MacBook/Pro without the battery will cause it to run one third slower. Who knew? Who cares? Why are you running your Macbook/Pro without the battery in it? Is this a common occurrence out there that we don't know about?
Possible reasons for this include:

Swedish provider hints at Multimedia Messaging service on iPhone
Lack of MMS support has been a complaint of iPhone users ever since the first versionThe iPhone may be the most advanced handheld computing device in the world, but you can flummox it pretty easily: for example, try to get a picture sent from your friend's cell phone via the Multimedia Messaging service (MMS).

BlackBerry Storm shipments delayed due to apparent version glitch
If you're one of the many, many BlackBerry Storm buyers who cleaned out inventories at Verizon stores on Friday, all that time spent waiting in the cold just became a bit more worthwhile. Online orders are being subject to shipping delays and, while you might think this is just another case of holiday supply versus demand, many are calling shenanigans. Supposedly the Storm was set to launch with OS version 4.7.0.82, but due to a last-minute security glitch every last handset had to be downgraded to .65 -- a surely time-consuming task that resulted in many fewer handsets in-store and online fo

Art Lebedev outthinks the room with square Luxofor traffic lights
We can only imagine that at least a few staffers over at Art Lebedev Studios get paid to do nothing but conjure up ideas, because this one is just marvelous. And marvelously simple, but that's beside the point. The Luxofor traffic light concept improves upon a nearly archaic design that still relies on spherical fixtures when there's really no need. Lebedev's team asserts that using square lights backed with bright laser diodes would make better use of the available space and provide a more noticeable signal to drowsy motorists. The roar of "why didn't I think of that?" being simultaneously stated is downright deafening.[Via Electronista]

Apple TV: The Recipe for Success
The iPhone and the Apple TV were born together. Sharing the same stage at Macworld 2007, both products were an attempt to extend the reach of products they already had, the iPhone growing on the iPod and the ROKR, and the Apple TV growing on the Mac Mini and iTunes. The spotlight at the event was primarily on the iPhone, as they were banking on it to extend their market reach and to bring multi-touch into the mainstream, but the Apple TV was a sleeper product that they hoped would take over the small but growing industry of Internet TV.
Two years later, the iPhone has exploded into the best selling phone of any cell phone, with high critical acclaim and an App Store that is revolutionizing application distribution, and the Apple TV has, well, been sleeping. Sales numbers haven't been revealed, and th

Court filing: Apple has no company-wide document retention policy
According to a court filing in the Psystar v. Apple lawsuit, Apple, Inc. has no corporate-wide policy on electronic document retention -- something one e-document expert told The Industry Standard was "negligent."
Employees could have emails from 5 years ago that become "potentially relevant", but because there was no policy in place regarding e-documents, those records could easily become destroyed -- making it potentially impossible for a plaintiff to make a case from internal documents.
One lawyer told me "that kind of crap could really get them in trouble."

Apple DisplayPort-Dual Link DVI adapter delayed until December 23. Bah! Humbug!
I don't know what to say. I am livid.
Not only has Apple charged me $100 to use my 30 inch screen with my Unibody MacBook, but the adapter is huge and takes a USB port for power. Oh, and there was a one month wait for these parts initially. Also, the way this technology works, I can't use a regular DVI adapter on a 30 inch monitor. If I try, I get the same resolution as on my MacBook's built-in display, not normal 1920x1200 resolution that the normal DVI supports. WTF.
OK, whatever. I am over it. It should come any day now right? Wrong! In a letter that could have been worded by the Grinch, Apple wrote to tell me and probably many others (below) that my Dual Link DVI Adapter wouldn't be shipping until Dec 23. That is over two months past when the MacBooks were shipped! Great news, we'll all be on Christmas vacation by then.

Is the 'legit' iPhone MMS just a Swedish redesign of jailbroken Swirly MMS?

Sweden! of course. But it is a rogue jailbroken application. Booo!

Lost in the news of iPhone Firmware 2.2 is another update from Apple that addresses the pro applications. A general update was released for all the apps, alongside updated versions of Final Cut Pro, Shake, Compressor, and Color.
While this is all fine and dandy, as a Final Cut user myself, I can't help but wondering when the next real update to Final Cut Studio will come. Apple dropped out of NAB this year, and there hasn't been any news at all regarding Final Cut Studio 3 for as long as I can remember. Hello Kitty C1 netbook packs a lotta 'tude into a small package
There's been a serious dearth of Hello Kitty-branded products these days, but the dry-spell is thankfully at an end, with the arrival of the Hello Kitty C1. The crazy cat's apparently first-ever netbook is (as you can see in the photo) quite a looker, and it's packing a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU with 1GB DDR2 SDRAM, a 945 GSE Express chipset and a 120GB hard drive. The 10.1-inch netbook's also got two USB ports, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and WiFi. Express Card 2.0 in 2010
Express Card 2.0 format was announced earlier this year. To evolve with other formats, it will adopt USB 3.0 and PCI-Express 2.0, both formats being backwards compatible, Express Card will be too.
So, current extension cards based on Express Card 1.x format will be fully functional when the Express Card 2.0 format will be launched in 2010. If current applications of Express Card format in such as DBT card or memory reader will not really benefit from faster transfer speed associated with the version 2.0 of this format, eSATA card might make good usage of higher performance level.
It is about time for Mac users that Apple update Mac OS X to let us start from external drives connected to Mac hardware via eSATA.

Apple approves third-party email client for the App Store, violates its own policies
Recently we were sent a PR email about an iPhone app called BdEmailer. No big deal, press releases about new iPhone applications show up in our box in large bundles every day -- but this one was different. According to the release, the program is the "the first wide email iPhone app that supports client SMTP." That means, in essence, that it duplicates an exact function of Apple's Mail application on the iPhone and touch. That's kind of a huge deal, because up until this point we've been led to believe that this duplication of functionality is one of the company's red flags when it comes to approval. Now mind you, we're not complaining. The idea of having more apps to choose from for doing things like sending email is a great idea, but Apple what the hell is going on? You refused Ma

T-Mobile G1s now shipping with 3.5mm headphone adapters included
It's not going to somehow magically conjure a jack where there's currently nothing more than a sad-looking ExtUSB port, but new G1 buyers can take some solace in the knowledge that they'll be able to plug in, turn it up, and tune out right out of the box. We've received official word from HTC that 3.5mm headphone adapters for the ExtUSB port are now being bundled with the phone, meaning you won't be stuck with that janky (no, seriously, it's insanely terrible) headset with the special connector that you get free of charge; after all, when we're blasting the Jonas Brothers at full tilt, we need the kind of fidelity that only high-end earbuds can provide. What, you got a problem with that?[Thanks to eve

How would you change Apple's unibody MacBook / MacBook Pro?
Now that you've had well over a month to toy with Apple's latest MacBook and MacBook Pro, we're just dying to know what your impressions are. Has the glass trackpad turned you off (or just turned you off to every other trackpad on the planet)? Is the inability to order the MBP with a matte display still grating your nerves? Are you happy with the performance? Is your "S" key randomly popping off at the most inopportune times? You just spent a load of cash on what essentially amounts to a first-generation product -- you've every right to make your voice heard. Do just that in comments below.Filed under: Laptops

NXE creating HDMI headaches for UK Xbox 360 owners?
The path to Netflix-enhanced glory hasn't been entirely trouble free for everyone, this time it's posters on AVForum noticing a distinct lack of audio on Xbox 360s connected to their HDTV by HDMI. So far suggested solutions for the afflicted include plugging in the hard drive while the system is on, or waiting several minutes before switching the monitor to HDMI, and repeating them every time the system is started. It's not the first time we've heard of UK-centric HDMI weirdness, any of you hearing a whole lot of nothing while gaming (that's not attributable to hard drive installs)?[Via

sWaP watch phone likely won't change your opinion of watch phones
While watch phones have gotten a tad more "wearable" in recent years, they still haven't exactly caught on like some folks may have thought they would in their younger, jetpack-filled visions of the future, and we're going to go out on a limb and speculate that this new so-called sWaP watch won't change that situation. As far as watch phones go, however, this one looks to be fairly capable, with it packing a SIM card slot to let you easily hop onto your cell network of choice, a 1.3 megapixel camera, 128MB of built-in memory, a T-Flash card slot to add up to 2GB more, and even an included Bluetooth headset to avoid the embarrassment of actually talking into your watch. You'll have to pay a bit of a pre
