UN communications chief predicts four billion mobile phone subs by year's end
Filed under: Cellphones
No need to adjust your set -- the United Nations communications chief has boldly predicted that half of planet Earth's population will be hooked on some sort of mobile phone before 2009 dawns. Granted, the numbers he's talking about do look strictly at subscriptions, so a small percentage will be skewed by those with multiple accounts (and thus, multiple numbers), but really, the forecast isn't all that outlandish. After all, we already hit 3.3 billion mobile phone subscriptions back in November of last year (and

Apple TV replacement looms?
The weekend Apple rumour machine has clipped across to the Apple TV, with venerable website TUAW reporting insider sources who claim existing versions of that product are set to be removed from sale by September 30.
The report adds "Additionally, the e-mail says that there will be a webcast "kick off" on September 30". A Tuesday. Is this an Apple-Tuesday?
Naturally, the report then speculates the move could see the introduction of a new model Apple TV, perhaps even a combined machine expressing elements of both the Mac mini and Apple's "in your den" 'hobby' produc

T-Mobile G1 pre-orders sell out
If you're a T-Mobile customer who's been dozing off for the past few days, you've already missed your chance to pre-order yourself a G1. With any luck, that won't be a problem and you'll just be able to march into a store on or around October 22 and pick one up the old-fashioned way, but the window of opportunity for an utterly stress-free Android buying experience is closed. We don't have hard numbers on just how many units were being offered through the pre-order program, but 60,000 is get

DARPA's Super-Resolution Vision System uses heatwaves to magnify targets
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
DARPA's Super-Resolution Vision System (SRVS) may not be as cool as the threat-sensing binoculars we saw a while back, but it may prove a little more practical. The prototype scope takes advantage of something called "atmospheric turbulence-generated micro-lensing" to provide three times the resolution of current diffraction-based scopes. In other words, if soldiers can see you more clearly, they can make an informed decision on whether or not to shoot you.[Via

Einstein's eco-friendly refrigerator concept dusted off, put to good use
Filed under: HouseholdGiven how large the green bandwagon has become, it's no real shock to see an energy-saving concept from the 1930s being exhumed and investigated further. Scientists at Oxford University have begun to take a closer look at an early invention from the great Albert Einstein in order to hopefully create refrigerators (and appliances in general) that could be used completely without electricity. Back in the day, Sir Albert created a mechanism that had no moving parts and used only pressurized gases to keep things chilly. Once compressors became more efficient in the

Leaps and bounds have been made with Sylvain Calinon's robotic portrait artist since we first caught a glimpse of this amazing AI being -- and no, we're not just referring to the stylish beret and mustache. Now dubbed "Salvador DaBot", the portraitist has developed far more advanced conversation skills, along with a voice that sounds a lot less like Steven Hawking. We kinda miss that feather pen he was sporting before, but his movement's a lot more natural now and his new marker seems

Video: ASUS N10 netbook gets hands-on treatment, plays COD4
Filed under: Laptops
We knew the ASUS N10 was a burly fellow when we took some street corner shots of it earlier this month, but we never even thought to toss Call of Duty 4 on there and waste away a solid 12 hours in online war zones. Thankfully, the blokes over at Mobile Computer did think to try that, and the results weren't half bad. 'Course, that discrete NVIDIA GeForce 9300M graphics set didn't hurt, and if you're sick enough to really buy a netbook for gaming, this one should probably be atop your list. At any rat

MacBook Pro upgrade - latest info/speculation
Yet more claims as to what to expect from Apple's future MacBook range.
This new set of claims tally with those we've been picking up, but news of the brick remains small. (Image here is not of the new device, by the way)
- New MacBook Pro won't have the tapered edges of the MacBook Air, but will keep the current basic shape.
- MacBook Pro will be thinner and "as much as a half-inch narrower than the current model with less bezel around the screen".
- Glossy screens.
- New black keyboard keys as used in MacBook Air.
- Glass trackpad will offer MultiTouch
- Split trackpad? (Good for contextual menus and Windows virtualisation)

UK artist Banksy on Apple...
Here's an image found on Banksy's website
Banksy is a UK street artist who made his name through a series of high-class garffittoids. His work commands ever-increasing value in the art collector's market, but despite his success no one really knows who the artist is. This image - originally taken from his site and first found by one Steve Clayton - confounds the Adam and Eve myth with Apple Inc. - and, by association - The Beatles and their Apple imprint. Well, Banksy is nothing if not a pop culture icon.
There's numerous samples of the artist's work available both on his website and also in an extensive col

Apple headed to top ten handset makers
Pacific Crest analysts believe Apple to have reduced its planned iPhone production targets by up to four million units, though reasons for this have not been given. Some speculation exists suggesting the production reduction is a response to continues stale mate in plans to launch the device in China, for example.
Apple will now build a total of 14 million to 15 million iPhones in the second half of the year, the analysts said. Pacific Crest also raised its second half iPhone unit sales projection to 11 million from 8 million.
Despite the reduction in production, these figures still put Apple in seventh place for sales in the global smartphone market, prompting Forward Conc

Thrustmaster thrusts Wii Glow Saber, Dual Trigger Gun accessories in our direction
