JVC TV responds to claps and waves for channel changes
Filed under: HDTV
JVC showed off a handclap and gesture recognition TV at CEATEC last week, designed to replace the bog standard remote control with hand movements and claps. Using a microphone and a video camera, the TV can pick up claps to change volume, and recognize a pointing finger to control elements on the screen (apparently you bend your finger to "click".) Frankly, the whole "having to lift your hand" element isn't the JVC TV's strongest suit: perhaps a better option would be to fit an accelerometer inside a standard remote. That way couch potatoes can sloppily jerk their arm to make changes.

Dell XPS M1530 and A2010 get nods and winks
Filed under: LaptopsOne rumor ends, and another one begins: now that the M1730 (pictured) is all out in the wild, rumors abound of a mid-range 15-inch M1530 to fit between the M1330 and its bigger brother. The evidence? An error message on a Creative webcam, and a potentially mistyped AC adapter listing on a cheap battery retailer's site. Not very compelling, but we've seen reality borne out of less. Also on the radar is an A2010, probably to replace the M20

"Artificial life" created as scientist makes sythetic chromosome
Filed under: Misc. GadgetsCraig Venter, a DNA researcher that had a part in deciphering the human genome, has stuck together 580,000 base pairs of genetic code to create an entirely new and alien chromosome. Based around the Mycoplasma genitalium bacterium (pictured in all its primordial glory), the new chromosome is then implanted into a living cell and renamed as Mycoplasma laboratorium -- don't you just love science jokes? The new "life form" is reliant on the host cell for replication and metabolism so it's not exactly entirely synthetic, but as the DNA is different, it is effectively an artificial form of life. Sounds like the human race's really d

Blu-Ray for MacBooks (finally)
No, Apple hasn't finally caved into their high end users' demands and offered a Blu-Ray option on their portable line. Aftermarket specialist Fastmac has, however, and is offering the 50Gb Optical Disc upgrade on all of Apple's recent laptops and consumer desktops:
iBook G4
iMac G5
iMac Intel
MacBook Pro (17-inch)
Mac mini
PowerBook G3 Pismo
PowerBook G4 Titanium (667 Mhz or higher)
PowerBook G4 Aluminum
The $1000 pricetag is hefty for the average Joe, but if you are in the making-movie biz and need to do work on a laptop, this is almost a no-brainer.
We are not sure we'd want to drop a G on Blu-Ray for an iBook but we can't wait to see the 17 inch HD screen enabled playback version of the device!

Norco DS-520 home NAS is probably more server than you need
Filed under: Storage
We're not certain what kind of home user needs a NAS solution this hardcore, but that's what Norco's targeting with the DS-520, a hot-swappable five-bay SATA II NAS that's actually a Celeron-M computer running your choice of Windows Home Server, XP, Linux, or "any other x86-based OS." The unit hits your network through the two Gigabit Ethernet ports, and you can configure the drives as RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 or JBOD arrays, and once you've maxed that out, the three eSATA ports and four USB 2.0 ports let you expand the system even farther. Those of you ready to max out your home networks are looking at dropping around $

iPhone delayed in France due to unlocking laws?
We're not exactly up on our French, let alone our French telecommunications law, but we're hearing that Apple's supposed launch of the iPhone in that country is being held up by two different regulations that prevent the iPhone from being the locked-down revenue-generating machine Apple wants it to be. The first, a law passed in 1998, requires that carriers unlock any phone upon customer request -- for a fee during the first six months of a contract and for free after that. Notably, all three major French carriers -- including Orange, which was

New Zunes support DVD quality video over TV-Out
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable VideoZune Insider has a little update about specifics of the new Zunes up on their site, with the rather minor -- but interesting -- tidbit that the new Zunes natively support video of up to 720x480 at 30fps, or 720x576 at 25fps. These formats will only play at full quality via TV-Out -- the Zune display is expected to be a regular 320 x 240 affair -- but it's nice to know that you'l

Animated WiFi detector shirt keeps you single with signal
Filed under: Wearables
Life's great priorities -- human interaction and network access -- seem to exist in perpetual tension, but those of you who know exactly where you stand might want to check out this WiFi-detector shirt, which will simultaneously inform passerby that a WiFi network is nearby and that they probably don't need to speak to you. The detachable detector / display combo runs off three AAA batteries for "hours" -- just long enough for you to alienate the locals before heading back to your parents' basement. Scarily enough, it's already out of stock, but ThinkGeek should have more in a couple weeks for $30.[Via

Gresso's new USB flash drives come adorned in wood and diamonds
Filed under: Storage
Love USB? Love wood? Love high fashion? It's okay if you lied about one of those, we swear. Regardless of the level of your honesty with us (which we now believe to be lower than expected), you'll want to get your grubby mitts all over these fancy pieces of technology / jewelry. Gresso's cross- and apple-shaped flash drives supposedly transmute the story of Adam & Eve into African mahogany, 18-karat gold, Swarovski crystals, and white diamonds. Inside the dolled-up necklaces, you'll find a 1GB USB drive, which will be perfect for holding all the pictures of yourself that you carry around, or video clips of you and your friends on the catwalk. The drives

Keepin' it real fake, part LXXXVII: "Manhattan" mobile not a T-Mobile Dash

Although this "Manhattan" Wide Screen GSM Dual Card Mobile phone doesn't rip-off any logos, it most certainly is more than "inspired" by T-Mobile's Dash. You probably won't want to pick up this $224.99 model, unless you don't mind living without any internet access at all (it doesn't even do GPRS), but if you need a phone that does two SIM cards -- we can't imagine what for -- then you're in luck. A company called Computer Choppers has put together a Gold-plated MacBook Pro, with an appropriately diamond studded Apple logo. Should go nicely with your gold plated

Seeqpod Hooks Up iPod Touch and iPhone Owners with Monster Music Library
Billed as he "World's Largest Index of Playable Internet Music", seeqpod has just unveiled an extremely user friendly interface for iPodTouch/iPhone users. The application will make Apple happy that it is using its "Web 2.0 SDK" but upset that it is using it for (what could be easily considered) piracy. Another negative for Cupertino is that it will also be competition for the iTunes Music Store in that when used from a desktop, users can download mp3s directly to your computer. The iTunes mobile store could also lose some impulse buyers..
The application goes out and searches the Internet for mp3s and then indexes them using the metadata in the files. A quick check of our favorite artists netted a wealth of good content. Video searches are also in the wings for seeqpod.

Add/Edit calendar functionality coming to the iPod touch?

With the evidence being a screengrab of an email from "sjobs@apple.com," David Jearly at the MacRumors forum claims to have definitive proof that the lack of user editing of calendars on the iPod touch is a "bug" that will be fixed in the next update. To us, the absence of an editing option is more than a simple

iPhone v1.1.1 exploits starting to surface
Filed under: CellphonesAs if anyone expected it to stay locked down forever, the layers of security surrounding v1.1.1 of the iPhone firmware are being peeled away. TUAW's Erica Sadun managed to get read / write access to the phone's directories during her liveblogging session, and the hackint0sh forums are abuzz about a new hacking method that uses buffer overflow via "carefully crafted" TIFFs that crash Mobile Safari. Neither of the new hacks approach the relative ease of use that we'd seen pre-v1.1.1, but it's still early days yet. Apple, throw us a bone here, will ya?

MIT student's Biocell creates electricity from biomass on the cheap
Filed under: Household
Five MIT students under the team name BioVolt have created a $2 gadget that uses biomass to generate electricity. The output of the device isn't particularly significant -- six months to charge your cell means you shouldn't throw away that charger just yet -- but the low cost of the components, the availability of "biomass," and the capability for chaining multiple devices together means this is the perfect solution for isolated areas or poor communities. It's good news for the researchers too, who happened to win $5,000 in a design competition for their efforts. Good show lads.

Yamaha's YSP-500 compact "Sound Projector"

As much as audiophiles may hate all-in-one "sound projection" boxes that simulate multiple speakers, as long as consumers have limited space in their apartments -- or remain unwilling to chuck cables all over the place -- there will be a market for such devices. The Yamaha YSP-500 has dimensions of 610 x 120 x 220mm, and pumps out a rather dismal 62W over sixteen (!) 28mm, and two 8mm loudspeakers. It supports a variety of different surround sound formats, but if you really care about them you probably shouldn't be looking at this set, which is launching late this month in Japan. No word yet on pricing, or a US launch.
