Verizon 'never in the running' for 2007 iPhone, says CEO

Verizon didn't go through "the sort of mating dance" that AT&T did for the first-generation iPhone because it was "never in the running," says the company's CEO, Ivan Seidenberg. When Apple was approaching carriers about the device, according to Seidenberg, it wanted "one carrier in every major market." Because Apple was also strictly focused on GSM-based carriers, it ended up choosing AT&T in the US.
