The Japanese iPad 3G is not being locked exclusively to Softbank, an Apple spokeswoman clarifies. Softbank is the country's only official carrier of the device, as was revealed when rival NTT DoCoMo declared that it would abandon iPad plans. The situation is unexpected in that unlike the US, there is no basic technical barrier for other providers, and Apple has shown a growing preference for multiple device carriers per country.
