Magnetic Tape Data: Future Looks Bright

With the recent increase of storage space of our 3.5" HD, many users were questioning the future of Magnetic tape as a long term storage device. Fujitsu and IBM have demoed a new linear magnetic tape technology allowing to reach a new world record: 29.5 billion bits per square inch with magnetic tape media developed using the barium-ferrite (BaFe)) particle. Employing its NANOCUBIC technology, Fujifilm succeeded in produce a media uniformly coated with dispersed BaFe particles. In summary, this support allows storage of 35 TB of uncompressed data, in other words 44x more than the amount of data hold on current cartridge. If this coating technology could be applied to 3.5" HD, we would then be able to get HD with storage space toping around 20 TB. So, there is still room for improvement, for sure 128 GB SSD looks then very small.
