The second issue was the tricky way Netpliance reversed each pair of pins in the IDE connection. D-Link DSB-H3ETX were folks selling these special reversed pin IDE cables, but I decided to have a go at making one myself, and enlisted a friend to help with the delicate task of stripping apart a ribbon cable and resoldering every pair of pins reversed.
