The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced its annual Costume Institute exhibition and gala and Apple again will be one of the sponsors for the event, according to Vogue. WSJ: AT&T agrees to acquire Time Warner for >$80 billion, deal to be announced shortly
After a few days of deliberations, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the deal is done. AT&T has agreed to buy Time Warner for more than $80 billion. This values Time Warner shares at around $105 each, a significant premium over the closing price of $89 on Friday. The deal will entrench the carrier further into the entertainment business; AT&T and Time Warner are expected to announce the acquisition as soon as later today.

IBM: Umstieg auf Macs hat sich gelohnt

Developer finds unused one-handed iPhone keyboard in iOS system code, activated by edge swipes
Prolific Apple hacker/developer Steve Troughton-Smith last night posted on Twitter that he has found a one-handed mode for the iPhone keyboard, hacking the iOS Simulator to demo the unreleased feature as shown above. The code has apparently been in the system since iOS 8 but is yet to be released as a public-facing feature.
The one-handed keyboard mode is activated by an edge swipe on the keys, revealing a sidebar of cut/copy/paste controls and squishing the other keys down to the side. This would make it much easier for the user to stretch their thumb across the entire width of the alphabet keys, improving one-handed use on larger iPhones.

As Apple explores dynamic keyboards, patent describes variable keyboard travel
We’ve been hearing reports that Apple is planning to adopt hardware keyboard with e-ink displays in future MacBooks, the most recent of which suggested that the technology will be incorporated into 2018 models.

Comment: IBM’s Apple deployment stats should be a lesson to enterprise companies everywhere
IBM reported some pretty impressive stats this week. Not least among them the fact that 73% of IBM employees – the company whose personal computer division was once almost synonymous with Microsoft – want a Mac as their next PC. The company is currently equipping its employees with Macs at the rate of 1300 people per week.
Indeed, IBM Japan has gone as far as making Macs standard-issue: any employee wanting a Windows machine instead has to make a special request justifying their need.

Report: iPhone 7 models w/ Qualcomm modem feature better cellular performance versus Intel
In this latest iPhone generation, Apple has brought to market two iPhone 7 variants: the GSM/WCDMA/LTE with Intel modem version, and the GSM/CDMA/WCDMA/TD-SCDMA/LTE version with Qualcomm hardware. A new report is highlighting the first performance differences between the iPhone 7 featuring Intel’s modem hardware compared to the iPhone 7 featuring Qualcomm modem hardware.
The report from Cellular Insights finds that iPhone 7’s equipped with Qualcomm’s MDM9645M modem, which powers the (A1660, A1661) Verizon, Sprint, and SIM-free models, features better cellular performance than the (A1778, A1784) Intel version. Report: AT&T and Time Warner holding early discussions about possible merger [Update]
[Update 10/21: WSJ now reports that the talks are further along than previously reported, adding that a deal could be announced this weekend.]
While Apple was once rumored to have an interest in acquiring Time Warner, Bloomberg now reports that AT&T has recently held discussions with the company to talk about a possible merger. The report cites “people familiar with the matter” and claims that, while the talks at this stage are informal, the two companies have focused on “building relations.”

Apple investigating iPhone 7 that set car on fire, spurious comparisons with Note 7 being made
An Australian surfing instructor has told 7 News that an iPhone 7 left in a car caught fire, destroying the vehicle.
Mat Jones says he had left the phone under clothes in his car while taking a surf lesson. When he returned, he was shocked to discover the vehicle filled with smoke.
It hasn’t yet been confirmed that the phone was the cause of the fire: Apple says that it is aware of the incident and is investigating.
Some commentators are drawing the inevitable but spurious comparisons with Samsung’s Note 7 fires …

China now Apple’s largest software market, overtaking U.S. for first time – App Annie
There have been predictions for years that China would eventually be a larger market for Apple than the USA. The weak Chinese economy means that it hasn’t yet happened in hardware, but the latest App Annie data says that it’s already got there on the software side.
The highlight of this report is certainly China overtaking the U.S to become the largest market in the world for iOS App Store revenue — earning over $1.7 billion in Q3 2016. We predicted in Q1 that China’s rapid iOS revenue growth would drive it right past the U.S well before year’s end — China is now leading the U.S by over 15%.
The rapid growth in Chinese spending – a 500% increase in two years – is in line with earlier predictions. The stats also illustrate the importance of games in driving App Store sales …

Apple launches new Facebook page for Beats 1, its free worldwide internet radio station
Apple has launched a dedicated Facebook page for Beats 1, the free worldwide Apple Music radio station run by human hosts, unlike other Apple Music stations which are generated by computer algorithms and require an Apple Music streaming subscription.
The new Beats 1 account is currently highlighting Zane Lowe’s exclusive interview with Lady Gaga, featuring video snippets and quotes. Although the page is not yet verified on Facebook, the account’s legitimacy is confirmed as the verified Apple Music account shared a post from the Beats 1 page.

Apple’s campus store has always sold exclusive collectables like T-shirts and pens, and the Jony Ive-designed retail store adds Apple products just like traditional Apple Stores.

WSJ: Apple has approached Time Warner in recent months, closely monitoring AT&T’s acquisition talks
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple isn’t totally ruling out a Time Warner acquisition as talks between the network and AT&T appear to be moving forward. Yesterday it was reported that AT&T is looking at the possibility of a merger with Time Warner, then today it was separately reported that the talks could be much further along than previously reported. Now the WSJ is adding that Apple is once again monitoring the situation closely and has even approached the company in the last few months…
