Schiller, developer trade barbs over Airfoil Speakers Touch
Developer Rogue Amoeba and Apple's senior VP for worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, are leveling accusations at each other in the wake of Airfoil Speakers Touch returning to the App Store without iOS-to-iOS streaming, reports say. iBook Lessons: Style sheets
One of the challenges Steve Sande and I face, when building our ebooks, is to present our manuscripts with reasonable typographic flair. That's harder than you might first think because readers can customize many ebook features, including fonts. In iBooks, they may choose sans-serif Seravek over, say, serif'ed Palatino.
Instead of worrying about particular font mixes, we found we needed to concentrate more on the layout geometry. These issues included relative font sizes (e.g. how the heading font size compared to the text font), indentations for lists and notes, in-paragraph spacing that controlled how dense each paragraph was wrapped together and between-paragraph spacing.
Over time, we've evolved our in-house style sheet to define how each of these elements are laid out in our ebooks. Our late

Well, it was a pretty safe bet that there was going to be some iOS news, and now we can pretty much confirm that iOS 6 will be unveiled at Cupertino's big developer event. What exactly we might see from the self proclaimed "world's most advanced mobile operating system" is anybody's guess, but it's probably safe to assume the power of flight or teleportation is not on the feature list. Greetings from -- actually, scratch that, we're all back home now, but we had a blast spending the week in sunny, smoggy downtown Los Angeles -- even if this year's Electronics Entertainment Expo wasn't exactly the most exciting in recent memory. FTC urges ITC not to ban iPhone, iPad and Xbox
The Federal Trade Commission took on the growing problem of injunctions in a letter addressed to the US International Trade Commission, according to a report by CNET. The letter was meant to dissuade the federal agency from approving import bans in patent and trademark infringement cases that involve industry standards like 3G. The FTC warns such injunctions against products like the iPhone, iPad and Xbox could harm consumers and stifle innovation.

Apple is planning to announce an SDK for the Apple TV at next week's WWDC in San Francisco, a Boy Genius Report source claims. No other details have been shared, but the change would allow third-party developers to create apps for the Apple TV. T-Mobile "coincidence" covers WWDC attendees with iPhone-compatible HSPA+
T-Mobile confirmed to 9to5Mac that its 4G HSPA+ coverage will be available to WWDC attendees next week in San Francisco. The carrier said it upgraded its coverage inside the West side of the Moscone Center and now deploys HSPA+ on the 1900MHz band. The timing and location of this update is a coincidence, according to the carrier, and has nothing to do with any large crowd of iPhone users arriving in Moscone. (Ahem.)

Chitika reports that features entice iOS users to update, not security
Do you rush to install each new version of iOS or do you only jump at those versions that include significant features? If you chose the latter, then you are like many iOS users, says a report by Chitika.
The analytics firm looked at iOS adoption rates and found that 12.5 percent of users installed iOS 5.1.1 within the first week. This compares to 20 percent who grabbed the feature-laden iOS 5 in the first seven days. "Users of Apple mobile devices are, as a group, much quicker to upgrade their software when a new release touts new features, rather than security fixes," says Chitika.

Barnes & Noble complains to DOJ about e-book fixing case
Bookseller Barnes & Noble has sent a complaint to the US Department of Justice regarding a proposed settlement in the latter's case against e-book price fixing, says paidContent. The DOJ has proposed a settlement with publishers HarperCollins, Hachette, and Simon & Schuster, who were all accused of colluding to keep e-book prices artificially high by moving to an agency model. News: Apple hit with penalty over iPad ‘4G’ moniker

If you're here in London next week, feel free to drop on by the Wood Pub in Marylebone this coming Monday to follow Apple's 2012 WWDC keynote. The London Mac User Group is hosting the get together, which begins at 17:45 (GMT) on June 11th. Fuji Xerox has showcased its latest e-paper model at SID in Boston. The 5-inch 600 x 800 display adjusts the electric field for each color, swinging them between the two layers of the screen. NYC may let iPhones hail taxis
Soon, New Yorkers may be puling out their smartphones instead of waving their hands when they need to hail a cab. According to an ABC News report, the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) of NYC is looking for developers to help bring access to its taxi fleet to mobile phones.
The Commission put out a call for developers who can implement a system that would let customers schedule a cab and pay for the ride using their smartphone. One such solution, Taxi Magic, is being used in 45 US cities to schedule over 30,000 taxicabs.

Apple's MacBook Air has a characteristic slim design that's immediately recognizable by both Apple fans and Windows users. According to The Verge, Apple now owns a design patent that covers this distinctive tapered design.
In their analysis, The Verge points out that the patent's drawings focus on the sloping edges and the overall shape of the lid and base of the laptop, not the placement of extras like the ports and rubber feet. Retina apps start to appear on Mac App Store ahead of WWDC
Rumors of Retina Display-equipped Macs circulating ahead of Appleís WWDC scheduled for next week have gained further momentum with the appearance of apps getting prepared for the anticipated launch or launches. A well-known utility made by Brothers Roloff called FolderWatch Mac App Store has surfaced on the Mac App Store newly updated to support ëRetina graphics.í Whether or not this can be taken as confirmation or pure speculation on the part of the developers will likely only become fully evident when Tim Cook takes the stage next week.

Apple to pay A$2.25 million fine in Australia for iPad 4G name
Apple may have to pay a stiff penalty in Australia over the use of "4G" in the new iPad's model name. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Apple has agreed to pay a A$2.25 million (US$2.2 million) fine to settle a legal battle it has been fighting with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Apple will also pay the ACCC costs of A$300,000 (US$295,000).
Though Apple has said it will pay a fine, the court must still approve the settlement terms before Apple can put this issue behind them. As a result of this case and other similar ones in the UK and Sweden, Apple changed the model name of the mobile

Firefox demotes Yandex, makes Google the default search engine in Russia
It looks like you can chalk up one more win for Google in its bid to be the number one search engine in as many places as possible. When the next version of Firefox rolls out in Russia, Google will be the default search engine, ousting local site Yandex from its long-held spot (though it will still be the second listed in the search bar). In a bit of a preemptive move, though, Yandex has also put out a press release to remind folks that it will continue to offer its own customized version of Firefox, in which it will remain front and center.

Brandheiß: Die erste Mac App mit Retina-Feature aufgetaucht
Ich habe ja selbst nicht dran gedacht, aber nun sehen wir eine erste App die Retina graphics im Funktionsumfang enthält.
(Wie im Screenshot zu sehen: Die App heißt FolderWatch)
Ob die Entwickler nur Geld machen wollen, sich vorsichtshalber auf neue Displays einstellen oder ob sie tatsächlich nähere Informationen von Apple erhalten haben…wer weiß.
Jedoch wird Apple wohl kaum Displays vorstellen, ohne nicht passende Anwendungen parat zu haben.
Wird Apple tatsächlich die mobilen Macs noch flacher machen, neue Prozessoren und mit einem Retina Display dürfte das wohl die Verkaufszahlen ordentlich nach oben treiben.

DICE+: Digitale Würfelspiele noch bunter (Hands-On)
Wer den digitalen Würfeln auf dem Screen nicht vertraut soll mit DICE+ eine mit dem Tablet oder ähnlichem verbundene physikalische Alternative bekommen. Über Bluetooth verbindet sich das Ding mit dem Spiel und sendet die Ergebnisse des Würfelns direkt. Honda Fit EV rated at 118 MPGe, will get you 82 of those on one charge
Honda's perky little Fit EV has just been marked and measured by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA has rated the dinky 'lectro-wagon at 118 MPGe, which Honda claims is the best ever score. Our friends over at Autoblog aren't so sure, noting that the Tesla Roadster eked out 119 MPGe in its testing. That said, the Fit does best the Roadster on its city rating (132 over 124 MPGe) so perhaps there's some gentle number massaging going on. T-Mobile to offer HSPA+ '4G' network to WWDC attendees
By a 'coincidence' according to the company, T-Mobile will be upgrading network coverage inside the Moscone Center in San Francisco to test a 1900MHz HSPA+ "4G" network during the time that Apple's WWDC convention will be there, thus making it possible for unlocked iPhones and other smartphones to utilize the service. Judge puts the kibosh on one Apple vs. Motorola patent trial (maybe, tune in next week)
In an (all too rare, if you ask us) occurrence, US Circuit Judge Richard A. Posner has tentatively decided to dismiss an Apple patent infringement case against Motorola. Both sides were seeking damages in the case, and the decision to dismiss it "with prejudice" would mean neither side could refile these claims again. According to his ruling in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois, neither side had enough admissible claims to avoid dismissal so he's putting a stop to things before it ever goes in front of a jury. 30/30 app asks you to pay what you want
Well, this is clever! There's a nifty app called 30/30 that allows you to pay 3 different prices for it. How? All are in-app purchases, but don't really unlock anything. It's not a donation, which isn't allowed, because the developer isn't a non-profit and you are paying them for the shareware. It's just a clever way of using the App Store for an honor system.
The app itself is a timer app, used to set timers for activities. Similar to the minutes prescribed in the Pomodoro technique, except 30/30 allows a range of timing. The app is free to download, as the payment is up to you.

FTC tells ITC that bans over standards-based patents aren't kosher, looks warily at Motorola and Samsung

Vodafone, Telefonica pooling network resources in UK
Mobile carriers Vodafone UK and Telefonica UK (known as O2) are going to work together to create a shared network grid, the two companies have announced. The combined efforts of the two networks will see an increased coverage area for both companies in the short term, and a smoother national rollout of LTE services, currently aimed for the year 2015. Corsair setzt bei Neutron SSD erstmals auf LAMD-Controller
Corsair hat bereits diverse SSD-Controller verschiedener Hersteller – wie anfangs Indilinx und später SandForce sowie Marvell – in seinen Produkten verbaut. Nun stellt der Speicherspezialist die erste SSD-Serie mit einem Steuerungschip aus dem Hause Link_A_Media Devices (LAMD) vor, der somit im Endkundensegment Premiere feiert.

3M, Nanosys using quantum dots to improve LCD color
Nanosys and the Optical Systems division of 3M are collaborating on a way to improve LCD screens. The Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF) uses the light emitting properties of quantum dots to enhance the backlight for LCDs, improving color by a claimed 50 percent compared to normal methodologies.
