Richard Branson launches Virgin Oceanic to explore the ocean's depths
Richard Branson may have already branded his Necker Nymph aero submarine with the "Virgin Oceanic" moniker, but he's now finally taken things to the next logical (and ambitious) step. He's just announced a new, full-fledged venture of the same name, which promises to do to nothing short of dive to the deepest part of each of the Earth's five oceans -- all within the next two years, no less. That will be done with the one-manned sub pictured above, which was designed by Graham Hawkes and will be piloted by Chris Welsh on its first dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench later this year -- those two are Branson's partner

Apple introduces iAd Gallery app four days late
When next someone asks you, "Hey, what is the top app I should put on my new iPhone? Can you recommend something that will be insanely useful, offer lots of long-term functionality, and really show off my device?"
Consider how much you dislike this person. Then, if they really deserve it, recommend Apple's new iAd Gallery app.
This free application offers "Great ads. On-demand. In your pocket." The application allows users to view and interact with Apple's stable of paid advertisements, as if nothing less would be sufficient to demonstrate our complete lack of a life.

Congress makes token vote to overturn FCC net neutrality
Republicans on Tuesday made a largely symbolic Congressional vote to nullify the FCC's net neutrality order. Voting 241-178 for a resolution of disapproval along party lines, the House said the rules banning app blocking and in some cases unfair network management should have "no force or effect." Georgia Congressman Rob Woodall claimed that the FCC needed permission to regulate the Internet but also that the House needed to automatically "reject any rules" that came from the FCC.

RFID-enabled vending machine ditches coinage, gets Mario Bros. tone (video)
A Twitter-enabled kitty door it is not, but this RFID-equipped soda machine is by far one of the most practical DIY projects we've seen in sometime. Apple publishes iAd Gallery app to promote ad network
Apple has released iAd Gallery, a free iPhone app it describes as a "celebration of advertising." The app highlights a selection of currently-running iAds, through which people can browse using a wheel interface, or alternately search according to advertiser, category or ad feature. Ads can be "Loved" for later access, and different sections of the app provide more information on the featured advertisers, ad agencies or iAd itself.

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak store advertising
Well, that was quick. No sooner than word got out about Toyota's advertising on the unofficial ModMyi jailbreak store for iOS, Apple has reportedly stepped in and asked Toyota to back down. Apparently the advertising company responsible for the theme and buy called up to remove it, and said that Apple had contacted Toyota directly, resulting in Toyota deciding against the promotion to "maintain their good relationship with Apple."

Fring ramps up group video calling beta for Android, iPhone
Fring on Tuesday hoped to one-up other mobile video chat options by starting a semi-public beta for group video calling. The test lets Android and iPhone users speak to three other users in real time. It should work cross-platform and won't carry charges, a slight dig at Skype's charging for group video calls on the desktop.

New York Yankees object to Cablevision iPad app
New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets broadcaster YES Network in a remark disputed the presence of its shows on the Cablevision iPad app. Despite Cablevision tapping directly into its existing cable network, YES told the TV provider it "does not have the right" to stream the live games. It didn't say in comments to Multichannel whether it had threatened a lawsuit.

Apple pressure forces Toyota Scion promo off of Cydia
Toyota's Scion theme for jailbroken iOS devices has been pulled from Cydia as a result of pressure from Apple, according to a report. The theme was created by Velti, an ad agency working on behalf of Toyota. In asking for the Scion theme to be pulled, a contact from Velti is said to have explained that the order came from Toyota, which in turn had been pushed by Apple to remove the theme and end the campaign. Toyota complied so as to "maintain their good relationship with Apple," says the Velti contact.

SpaceX reveals plans for world's most powerful rocket, the Falcon Heavy
SpaceX promised something big, and it's now delivered. The company today revealed its plans for the Falcon Heavy, which promises to be the "world's most powerful rocket." Just how powerful is that? SpaceX says the 22-story rocket will be able to carry satellites or spacecraft weighing over 53 metric tons (or 117,000 pounds) into low earth orbit, which is nearly twice what the Space Shuttle is able to carry. Nasdaq to diminish Apple's portion of the Nasdaq-100
The Wall Street Journal reports that Nasdaq will drop Apple's profile in its Nasdaq-100 stock index, lowering Apple's share from 20.5% to around 12.3%, more in line with the number of actual Apple shares out there. Apple is one of 81 companies who are seeing their shares lowered by the rebalance, while 19 other companies, including Google and Microsoft, will have their shares increased. The index was last adjusted in this way back in 1998, but back then Apple obviously wasn't nearly as big a company financially as it is now, so Nasdaq is simply adjusting things to bring shares more in line with the actual market.
The changes should take effect on May 2, and Nasdaq does

Epic: Android too inconsistent, slow for gaming versus iOS
Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney in an interview on Tuesday ruled out game development on Android in favor of the iPhone and iPad. Games like Infinity Blade couldn't come to Android because Epic "can't guarantee" a baseline experience on every device. Even if a fast quad-core device like the Sony NGP were underneath, Sweeney told Gizmodo, the free rein hardware makers and carriers have to impose apps and custom interfaces meant you would get a different experience that could slow it down.

Google Books for iOS adds landscape reading, speed boost
Google Books for iOS was introduced late last year and opened the world of Google's two million digital books to iOS owners. The application competed with Apple's iBooks and Amazon's Kindle application but lacked the polish and finesse of these two applications.
This latest version released today kicks it up a notch by adding a landscape mode for eBook reading on your iPad and a find feature that shows specific keyword and phrase matches as you scroll through a book. Consumer Reports ranks iPad top among tablets
Apple's iPad 2 is king of the tablets according to a comparative review released by Consumer Reports (CR) today. The publication's lab evaluated ten of the "most-promising" tablet devices from Apple, Archos, Dell, Motorola, Samsung, and ViewSonic. iPhone 5 still delayed beyond June, sources claim
The iPhone 5 will indeed miss a normal June launch date, contrary to recent rumors, sources for The Loop claim. Stemming from a South Korean site, the rumors not only indicated an unusual post-WWDC Apple event, but that Korean carriers KT and SK Telecom would be some of the first in the world to get the device. In the past Korea has only received new iPhones several months after the initial launch.

Verizon iPhone 4 owners report fewer dropped calls than AT&T customers
ChangeWave conducted a survey of 4,068 wireless customers to determine the difference between Verizon iPhone owners and AT&T iPhone owners. The survey was completed on March 28th and takes into account Verizon owners' initial response to the iPhone's performance on the CDMA network.
The results show that overall, Verizon iPhone owners are as equally as satisfied as their AT&T counterparts with 82% of Verizon owners and 80% of AT&T owners reporting they are very satisfied with their current service. Dropped calls on the two carriers differed greatly with AT&T customers reporting up to 4.6 percent of dropped calls and Verizon customers coming in with a much lower 1.4 percent.

App review: SPB Shell 3D for Android
As we all know, the beauty of Android stems from the fact that you get a wide variety of choices when it comes to devices and interface, though the latter can sometimes be a double-edged sword. Luckily, users who are fed up with their bloated Android UI but don't want to (or can't) mess around with ROMs now have another easy solution. Heat, battery problems persist for iPhone 4s on iOS 4.3.1
The iOS 4.3.1 update has done nothing to fix battery and overheating problems on the iPhone 4, and may even be triggering new ones, according to complaints on Apple's support forums. Affected phones will see unusually rapid battery drain, for instance dropping from 14 to 5 percent power in as little as 10 minutes. The issue appears to occur regardless of whether or not an app is in use.

Martin Jetpack flies again, sees IPO on horizon but no commercial sales yet (video)
We were all aflutter this time last year when it was announced that the Martin Jetpack was finally available commercially and would be heading out to eager buyers in exchange for $86,000. Analyst: Atrix, Xoom sales 'disappointing'
Motorola may be facing serious trouble with sales of the Atrix 4G and the Xoom, Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette said Tuesday. An investigation of the supply chain showed that sales of both Android devices had been "disappointing." Atrix sales were unusually undermined not by the iPhone 4 but, unusually, the $49 iPhone 3GS.

Google Books iOS app gains new search, landscape modes
Google has updated the iOS version of its free Books app with two main additions plus an assortment of smaller changes. AMD launches Radeon HD 6790 without fanfare
AMD in an uncharacteristically unannounced launch officially released the Radeon HD 6790. The chipset tackles the low- to mid-range segment at $150 and is the spiritual successor to the 5770. Die Spielzeugkamera Fuuvi kommt in sechs Farben und ist mit ihren Bildchen (1280 x 1024 Pixel) gerade noch so als Schnappschuss-Gadget zu bezeichnen, das mit fast schon beachtlichen 720 x 480 Pixeln bei 30 fps filmt. Das niedliche Gerätchen (5 x 70 x 15 Millimeter) wiegt luftige 24 Gramm und kann auch als USB-Stick genutzt werden, auch wenn es ohne integrierten Speicher kommt, dafür gibt es aber einen Micro-SD-Slot für bis zu 16 GB. GE may have mirrorless interchangeable camera by late 2011
GE's General Imaging said in remarks that the company is branching out into the semi-pro segment with mirrorless, interchangeable lens cameras. AMD on Tuesday said it had started shipping its first batch of Llano processors. The 32 nanometer A-series chips are the first destined for both small nettops and netbooks but to scale up to performance levels that would be competitive in some full-size notebooks. Displayausgabe auch auf altem iPad möglich
Nachdem bereits seit Monaten per Jailbreak die Möglichkeit bestand, sein iOS-Display über VGA-Adapter auszugeben, kam nun Apple mit dem Digital AV-Adapter und einer offiziellen Implementierung im neuen iPad. Klar, dass die Jailbreaker da nicht lange zu schauen: Nach einigen Tagen fand man raus, dass man durch eine kleine Änderung in der Property List, in der die Fähigkeiten des entsprechenden Gerätes gelistet werden, wie zum Beispiel FaceTime beim oder HDR-Fotografie beim iPhone 4, dieses Feature auch auf dem alten iPad einschalten kann.

Texas Instruments to acquire National Semiconductor for $6.5 billion in cash money
As the saying goes, everything's bigger in Texas, and that includes Texas Instruments' (TI) share of the semiconductor market. iPhone 4 overheating continues to plague some users
Reports are coming in of iPhone 4s overheating and experiencing severe battery problems after updating to iOS 4.3.1.
Some users started having problems with the iOS 4.3 update, and it hasn't been resolved with the 4.3.1 update. The problem has been resolved for a few users by removing stale sync threads in Mail or by tracking down other apps, including Ping, which are sending or receiving large quantities of data while the iPhone is in standby.
Apple issued a warning about iPhones overheating due to external temperatures back in 2009, although this time no users report seeing the famous "iPhone needs to cool down" image yet.

Possible iPod touch 5 shows capacitive home button, 128GB
A purported leak may have given away either Apple's recent or future plans for the iPod touch. An engineering sample with a DVT-1 (Design Verification Test) badge has a design similar to that of the current iPod touch but with what appears to be a capacitive, touch-sensitive home button instead of the usual physical model. The CrunchGear photos also show it with firmware lit carrying 128GB of total storage, which hasn't been seen before in an iPod touch model.

AT&T, Verizon iPhone owners equally satisified, says survey
AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4 owners are so far about equally satisfied, a new ChangeWave survey suggests. Taken from a group of 4,068 people, the survey's results show 82 percent of Verizon subscribers being "very satisfied" versus 80 percent for AT&T. Those only "somewhat satisfied" accounted for 16 percent at Verizon and 18 percent at AT&T.

AT&T bumps early-upgrade prices for all smartphones, reminds that patience is a virtue
The two year contract is a blessing and a curse, but looking at these updated prices from AT&T we're thinking those upgrading early and doing so to a one year contract are quite simply doomed. AT&T has upped the price on all early-upgrade one year commitment smartphones by a whopping $150. That's painful, but the iPhone is, at least, getting off a little easier. It's jumping by a relatively meager $50, meaning a new 32GB iPhone 4 will cost you $549 vs the previous $449. Or you could, you know, just suck it up for another 12 months.

Seagate ships pencil-sized GoFlex Slim drive
Seagate fulfilled one of its CES promises on Tuesday and shipped the GoFlex Slim. The 320GB disk earns its name from an extremely minimalist shell that leads to a 9mm (0.35in) height about as thick as a pencil. In spite of the size, speed is a major factor and is helped along by a 7,200RPM spin speed and out-of-the-box USB 3.0 support, the combination of which can transfer at up to 40MB per second.

Apples Gewicht im Nasdaq-100 wird erheblich gedrosselt
Die Nasdaq OMX Group gab bekannt, dass Apples Einfluss auf den Index Nasdaq-100 gedrosselt werden sollen. Momentan trägt Apple mit 20,49 Prozent bei, ab dem 2. Radio reporter uses iPhone 4 for all of his work
There's a very cool story over on the MediaShift pages of the PBS website about how a radio reporter has replaced almost all of his bulky radio equipment and with an iPhone 4.
Neal Augenstein started working for WTOP in Washington 14 years ago, when just his mobile phone weighed as much as a bowling bag, he says. Fujifilm in a rare out-of-cycle introduction put out a new flagship camera for its Z-series designer line. The Z900 EXR has a new CMOS-based, 16-megapixel sensor with EXR that should be much better at capturing shots in low light. As an EXR unit, it can focus on resolution or drop the resolution to either reduce noise or improve the dynamic range for the multi-shot HDR mode.

News: Court reverses $625 million verdict against Apple
Apple has won a reversal in a patent infringement case that saw the iPod-maker hit with $625.5 million in damages. Bloomberg reports that U.S. District Judge Leonard Davis ruled that Apple didn’t infringe on patents owned by Mirror Worlds LLC, and closed the case in Apple’s favor. BlueStacks offering Android virtualization within Windows, harmony for one and all
It'd be too easy to simply describe BlueStack's suddenly titillating software as Android's Parallels for Windows, but really -- why try to complicate things? Currently available only in test form, the program is designed to run a virtualized copy of Android atop a not-at-all-virtualized copy of Windows, and the implications could be far-reaching. Graphene transistors may self-cool, lead to greener tech
Researchers from the University of Illinois may have found a way of creating transistors from graphene that have a unique self-cooling property. Current limitations of computer chips made from silicon revolve around the way they generate heat which often require an external cooling source. This affects the size of the chips and how efficient they can be. The new technique using graphene could deliver smaller, more powerful chips that could require little or no cooling at all.

As the App Store has matured, so have the apps on it -- many iOS games today are complicated, deep affairs that require strategy and finesse. But sometimes you just want to kill zombies, and that's what Van Pershing is all about. The title is a straight-up side-scrolling shooter. All you have to do in the game is move along, shoot a variety of weapons forward or backwards at different monsters and collect the loot that drops without dying. That's it. The action's simple, but the graphics are well-done, and there's enough variety and upgrades to the weapons to keep it interesting as a simple arcade game.
There is one major issue: later in the game, the upgrades don't quite come fast enough to stay alive, and unfortunately, there's no default weapo

NASDAQ OMX said Tuesday it would rebalance its NASDAQ-100 stock index to reduce Apple's weight on the market. As of May 2, AAPL will move from its large 20.5 percent of the index to 12.3 percent while other companies will get more influence, including Google (5.8 percent), Intel (4.2 percent), Microsoft (8.3 percent), and Oracle (6.7 percent). The aim is to give Apple a ratio relative to its size and not simply the number of shares.

Netzneutralität: Mobilfunkprovider scheitern mit Klage gegen FCC
Ein US-Berufungsgericht hat eine Klage Verizon und MetroPCS gegen die TelekommunikationsbehördeFCC zurückgewiesen. Cisco today revamped the rest of its E-series routers and SE-series switches to match the design aesthetic of the E4200. The E1200 and E1500 make up the baseline and provide 300Mbps 802.11n Wi-Fi only on the 2.4GHz band along with four 100Mbps Ethernet ports. While the US government hasn't issued an outright ban against the use of 'conflict minerals' coming from the Congo, it has passed a law that will require companies who use them to tell all of us when our gadgets have been paid for (in part) with blood. Dass das iPhone 5 und damit auch iOS 5 wahrscheinlich nicht auf der WWDC diesen Jahres kommen hatten wir schon berichtet, aber es sieht so aus, als ob es trotzdem Ende Juni erscheinen wird. Das berichtet die koreanische Seite ETNews.co.kr, ebenso dass es wohl einen Launch-Event mit Steve Jobs geben wird. Ein wenig Skepsis bleibt aber angebracht, denn als Quelle wird Apple direkt angegeben und die Nachricht wurde am 1. Impressionen Eröffnung Letec Winterthur; Joint-Venture zwischen Letec & DataQuest
Am vergangenen Samstag erhielt Winterthur ein Apple Premium Reseller (macprime.ch berichtete). Die Letec zog es aus dem seit Oktober 2007 bestehenden Shop-in-Shop im Büro Schoch neu an das obere Ende des Untertors. Am Untertor 2 steht nun seit Samstag mit der neuen Letec-Filiale auch in Winterthur ein Apple Premium Reseller. Die Verkaufsfläche erstreckt sich über zwei Stockwerke auf denen künftig täglich vier bis sechs Mitarbeiter Kunden beraten werden. Im dritten Stockwerk befindet sich ein Apple authorisiertes Service-Center mit täglich ein bis zwei Service Technikern.

Irgendwie scheinen sie es bei Rolls Royce jetzt doch ernster zu nehmen mit ihrer Luxuskarosse Rolls Royce 102EX mit Elektroantrieb und haben sie nun erstmals auch in externe Hände gegeben. Ben Oliver von Automobile durfte mit dem E-Schlitten einmal um den Genfer See fahren und dabei fast die Reichweite von knapp 200 Kilometern ausfahren. Nikon makes D5100 official with ISO 102,400 night video
Nikon tonight brought out its long planned D5100. The camera has a brand new, 180 degree variable swiveling LCD with a sharp 921,000-pixel output and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Video is the same 1080p30 as on the D3100 and D7000, but a sensor tweak gives it a new Night Vision mode for very low light: it can record in ISO 102,400 to get the moment when seeing the shot is more important than the amount of noise.

Federal prosecutors investigating Pandora, other smartphone apps over privacy concerns

Mirror World patent-infringement against Apple thrown out
Apple turned a rare court loss into a victory today with news that a federal judge in the Eastern District of Texas has thrown out a $625.5 million patent-infringement judgement against Apple won by Mirror Worlds LLC and closed the case. The judge ruled that Mirror Worlds' three patents were valid, but that Apple did not infringe them -- and that even if they had, the damage originally awarded by a jury was too high.

Pandora says grand jury looking into Apple and Android apps
One of the most popular music services, Pandora, has revealed that a federal grand jury is examining information sharing by mobile apps.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Pandora was served with a subpoena to produce documents relating to "information sharing processes of certain applications that run on the Apple and Android mobile platforms." A Pandora spokesperson says it does not "believe the company is a target of the investigation", and added "we believe that similar subpoenas were issued on an industry-wide basis to the publishers of numerous other smartphone applications." Indie band kicks out whole album made on GarageBand for iPad
Relative newcomer indie band The Ultramods reached an inevitable milestone on Monday by becoming the first known band to record entirely using GarageBand for iPad. Their new release Underwear Party ($10, iTunes) was composed and recorded entirely on the Apple tablet by the duo, Max Sparber and Coco Mault, over the course of two weeks. Facebook updates iPhone app, adds check-in, unfriending
Facebook today updated their iPhone/iPod Touch app (free) to version 3.4, adding Google maps to a new Places map view, the ability to check-in to events, an improved news feed and notifications interface, and a much-requested feature -- the ability to "unfriend" someone directly from the app. There are, however, still some missing abilities.

Toyota puts up theme, ads on ModMyi jailbreak repository
This is kind of a weird story, but definitely an interesting one. Word is going around that Toyota, of all brands, might be advertising on the ModMyi repository. Supposedly there's an official Scion interface theme on sale in the jailbreak store, and there are ads for the car manufacturer running throughout. That's fascinating -- traditionally, the jailbreak scene has been extremely independent, sitting as it does in a relatively gray legal area, but Toyota is a serious client to have when it comes to advertising.

MPAA sues Zediva for streaming DVDs, no one is surprised
We told you to get through that 10 pack of rentals quickly didn't we? As pretty much anyone could have predicted, the Motion Picture Association of America (in case you've forgotten, that's these guys) doesn't think Zediva has the right to rent access to DVDs for streaming across the internet. Specifically, the MPAA calls Zediva for not being the traditional rental service it claims to be, and claims streaming the output of a DVD player across the internet to even to one user

Hynix entwickelt DDR4-Speicher mit 2.400 MHz
