Samsung is Going to Sell its Memory Direct
Source : DigitimesIn August, Samsung provoked an outcry from its clients when it decided to raise the price of its memory chips 20%, selling them at a higher cost than the rest of the market. A new decision has come about which will further delicate the situation with its clients.
After having sold a flash music player and SSD drives, the company has decided to commercialise its memory cards, USB thumb drives, and other products based on flash under its own brand.
At the same time, in order to assure adequate supply and certainly to raise the price of flash memory, Samsung will be substantially decreasing the quantity of memory that it will sell to OEMs and other companies who have now become competitors.
They are giving themselves priority over the other manufactures to ensure their supply. It is unknown whether Apple will also be affected

iPhone Calls home
Digging into the iPhone applications, Uneasysilence has discovered that the "Stocks" and "Weather" applications communicate with an Apple server and that they send the IMEI number of the device. As this number is unique for every phone, Apple can easily trace every device.
Of course, this information has created quite an outcry and everyone is seeing Apple as a "Big Brother" without yet knowing the goal of this maneuver.
While waiting to know more, it is difficult to get an idea of the motivations which have lead to this initiative. But they could be valid. For instance, Apple could block web access to devices which have been stolen.

First Looks: DLO UrbanShell for iPod classic
If DLO's new UrbanShell for iPod classic ($20) hadn't broken within seconds of its removal from packaging, we would have a lot of nice things to say about this new case design. Employing a mix of soft-feeling rubber, a hard plastic shell, and a chrome plastic video viewing stand, UrbanShell includes protective screen film and a plastic insert that resizes the 160GB iPod classic-friendly body for the thinner 80GB classic model. We're really looking forward to testing HybridShell…

Dragon lets loose cheapo DuoShock 3 PS3 controller
Filed under: Gaming
Dragon's new DuoShock 3 may not be anything more than a pale imitation of Sony's own PS3 controller, but at least it's a dirt cheap pale imitation, with it setting you back just $17. For that price you will get 2.4GHz wireless capabilities, but it seems that you'll have to make do without the SIXAXIS' motion sensing capabilities, which could pose quite a problem depending on the games you plan to play with it. On the upside, you'll also be able to use the controller with your PC, as well as your PS2 with the included adapter. The controller does also boast a vibration function, although it seems pretty safe to assume that i

FIFA to trial chipped soccer ball in Japan

The referees at the upcoming Club World Cup in Japan will likely be taking a little less flack from the fans if a ball manages to come dangerously close to slipping into the net, as FIFA is deploying a type of "goal-line" technology that more precisely indicates whether debatable shots really crossed the line. At the heart of the system are four sensors that are placed around the goal and a single microchip within the so-called smart-ball; if the ball does indeed cross over the goal line, an encrypted message is instantly beamed out to a referee's watch, leaving no doubt as to whether or not a point should be awarded. Apparently, the system will be widely used at the 2010 World Cup

Filed under: CellphonesA follow-up to our earlier story regarding Verizon's patent lawsuit against Vonage: the latter company has lost its appeal against the former, and is now looking at having to pay the full $117.5 million settlement, plus $2.5 million to charity. It's been a bad few days for Vonage indeed, with the company's shares dropping 87 percent since IPO, and a tenth of its workforce out of a job. When you've hit rock bottom, the only way is up, right?[Via Slashdot]

Audi's Cross Cabriolet Quattro concept touts internet radio, B&O system
Filed under: Portable Audio, Transportation Granted, Audi's Cross Cabriolet Quattro is still a concept for now, but the proposed infotainment setup is quite swanky, indeed. Reportedly, the vehicle would include a Bang & Olufsen sound system that could stream internet radio thanks to its built-in internet link. Additionally, motorists could "judge" the tracks as they were played, enabling the system to "build up a picture of their preferences and offer individual play lists." The whip also boasts a built-in intercom system with noise cancelling capabilities, and What HiFi even has it that the int

Transcend joins the 16GB SDHC Class 6 party
Filed under: Storage
We already saw A-DATA unveil what it claimed was the "world's first" 16GB SDHC card in the Class 6 family, and now Transcend is hitting us all up with a very viable alternative. The card guarantees a minimum write speed of 6MB/second, includes ECC to automatically detect and fix errors and sports a lifetime warranty, too. Not a lot to say beyond that -- especially considering the glaring lack of a price or ship date -- but we doubt you'll be waiting too much longer before seeing this on store shelves.[Via

Sanyo's Xacti VPC-HD1000 camcorder gets reviewed
Filed under: Digital Cameras
Sanyo's line of Xacti camcorders have traditionally looked mighty fine on paper, but for one reason or another, expectations haven't exactly been met on the previous iterations. The firm's latest pistol-grip device yet again looked superb at a glance, but TrustedReviews found that the VPC-HD1000 still wasn't able to live up to its claims. On the upside, reviewers found the design to be "much improved," and the Full HD recording abilities were drooled over as well. Still, the crew couldn't help but be disappointed in the paltry four-megapixel CMOS sensor, and while it did perform "bette

Earthlink considers "strategically" withdrawing MuniFi investments

Translation? Earthlink ain't making a big enough return on its investments in MuniFi projects, and the shareholders are getting antsy. AIBO gets another shot at life, thanks to Wiimotes
Filed under: Robots
Just when you think the world has seen its fill of questionably-useful Wiimote hacks, some pranksters have to go and get AIBO involved. Disguised as a research project on human device interaction, the Wiibot hails from University of Calgary and involves a pair of Wiimotes and nunchucks -- the nunchucks are naturally strapped to the user's biceps -- for bending the AIBO to their will. In the video after the break you can see this interface method pitted against archaic keyboard input, or you can check out the read link to see these nerds try to justify these kinds of shenanigans.

Either way, you'll have to head to Japan to pick up the set of 85mm cones and cherry wood cabinets: yeah, it's get-it-yourself too.[Via Gadget Lab]

Is Apple collecting your iPhone usage data?
It looks like Apple is tracking iPhone users data including IMEI number, IP address and stock quote preferences (amongst other things) through a hidden string in the Weather.app and Stocks.app iPhone applications. This information is sent to "http://iphone-wu.apple.com/dgw?imei=%@&apptype=finance" (IP resolved "17.254.32.16"). See screenshot below for details.
From this information, Apple could build a profile on users. Where they travel, where they spend their free time, where they work, where they invest their money, what they browse, etc etc. Obviously most users would like to be able to control who has access to this information. If they connect this data with the credit card that you used to purchase the iPhone (r

Many details about the Kindle
Ok, we've got tons more kindle info! Here are most of the missing pieces on Amazon's Kindle.
It doesn't use a generic RSS aggregator -- it's Amazon-selected blogs only (and they "want every blog they can get"). Blogs that are aggregated by the Kindle get a revenue share with Amazon, since it costs money to get those publications.
The side scroller is, as we expected, a polarized PNLCD (pneumatic LCD). It looks amazing.
It's SD only, not SDHC.
It uses the Kindle file format (which is a variant of structured HTML), but also accepts Word and PDF files (but only via email since they need to be converted by Amazon),

Most significantly, they say the image quality is "severely hampered by noise," a problem that apparently crops up even at ISO 200, and beco

Unfortunately the device came out of box with too little juice to get on the EV-DO network, but the e-ink display looks great (as we'd expect). Rock Band gets reviewed, Guitar Hero trembles

We're pretty certain that quite a few of you have been (not so) patiently waiting for Rock Band to finally land at your doorstep for months now, but for those still wary about dropping 170 bones in one fell swoop for a video game, here's the critique you've been waiting for. ArsTechnica managed to get ahold of the beastly package and give everything from the build quality to the multiplayer modes a full run-through, and the long and short of it is that Rock Band, well, rocks.
GDDR5 around the Corner
Hynix introduced the first 1 Gigabit (128MB) GDDR5 DRAM chips.
Each 32-bits chip is able to operate at 5Gbps bandwidth and to process up to 20 GB/s of data. Depending on the graphic memory bus, data speed will evolve, from 160GB/s on a 256-bits bus, to 320GB/s on a 512-bits bus. With the latest memory bus, such chips will allow 2GB of VRAM to be managed on graphic cards.
If some users might think that this is a lot of memory for nothing, they should although consider that GPUs are currently used by OS X as well as Vista to boost display and rendering of both OSes. In addition, as the size of LCD panels will not keep increasing at a steady state, the future evolution in this field will be driven by higher resolution, always more

FB-DIMM Memory: Need for Low Voltage Modules
Source : TGdailyAll Mac Pro owners can confirm that when FB-DIMM memories are fully loaded with processes, they rapidly become very hot, despite the huge integrated heat sink and the dedicated air flow designed to cool them down. The problem is mostly linked to the FB-DIMM architecture, each module featuring both memory chips as well as a dedicated CPU to manage exchange between the memory bus and the chips.
Overheating events leading to Kernel panics usually take place when large capacity modules are installed. To avoid such problem, hereafter are some tricks:
- avoid working in a warm environment
- leave some space between the back panel of the Mac Pro and the wall or any surface
- think of cleaning regularly the dust trapped in the air flow system, or on the components located in the Mac Pro.

So, with a Capital Risk company controlled by Abu Dhabi signing a check of US$608 millions to acquire 8.1% of AMD, the Texan founder should be able to strengthen its R&D and improve its CPU manufacturing yields. This is true not only for CPUs, but also for ATI/AMD GPUs, in order to maintain the pressure on both Intel and nVidia.

AMD launches quad-core Phenom -- Intel shrugs
Filed under: Desktops
Just like we heard, AMD has gone live with Phenom. With it, we've got an entire new platform, codenamed "Spider." The Spider PC platform combines AMD Phenom quad-core processors, ATI Radeon HD 3800 series graphics, and AMD 7-series chipsets with CrossFireX and AMD OverDrive software for what AMD calls the "Ultimate visual Experience." That's the hype. Early reviews, however, are pretty much "underwhelmed" by the launch. Oh, the HD 3800 cards are ok (for mid-range graphics) and the 7-series chipset "is in good shape," but AMD needs to roll-

iPhone-Fassade in Berlin

Wholesaling of D block spectrum okayed by FCC
Filed under: Cellphones, WirelessLanding an agreement to create a worldwide mobile broadband standard with the freed up 700MHz band isn't the only good news going on in the spectrum world, as the FCC has also waived a previous regulation that would require winners of the D block segment to not wholesale more than 50-percent of its capacity. Now, the winner will be able to wholesale up to 100-percent of the capacity so long as it abides by the other guidelines surrounding D block, most notable of which is the provision that requires the victorious bidder to "build out a nationwide wireless network that is good enough to meet public safety

Again Google is Showing Interest in Mobile Telephony
Where will Google stop?
This is a question that everyone has asked for many years during which time the search giant has not ceased to grow larger and to consolidate its position and the revenue associated with it.
Since then, the company has begun diversifying it's activities, offering more and more internet services, although it remains dependent on internet service providers.
Its first real step towards other mediums than the computer is its Android project: an operating system for mobile phones. And it seems that Google hopes to launch it to the front of this market. The company will be willing to pay $4.6 million to purchase a part of the 700Mhz frequency band that the United States government is going to auction off in 2008.
The stakes are high as these frequencies are interesting. Indeed, they have the advantage of offering an excellent range and permitting speeds interesting enough to imagine the emergence of a great number of communication products, which will most certainl

Smart closet tells clueless geeks what to wear

If you count yourself as one of a legion of the "clothes clueless," then this smart closet could be the end of your troubles. It sounds as if you'll need a wardrobe full of RFID tagged clothes for it to work -- although the specific technology isn't clear -- but once your clothes are wired sown up, your wardrobe will inform you when you "accidentally" choose the same clothes the second time you meet the same person, and will give you advice on the correct shoes to go with your outfit, among other hints. Of course, the inventors have overlooked an array of paradoxes here (if you're

It would make sense because while you can put SATA drives on an SAS controller, but you cannot put those insanely fast 15,000 RPM drives on the inputs on the current MacPro motherboard.
