Lenovo's new Thinkstations look pretty sharp

We got all the specs on Lenovo's new Thinkstation line earlier today, but pics of the new S10 and D10 case design just landed in our inbox and we've got to say, it looks pretty slick. Sure, that handle doesn't seem like it'll be all too useful, but compared to Lenovo's last attempt at advanced design, this thing is positively restrained. Tablet Mac in the works?
Everybody and their brother is talking about ASUS and their supposed new Tablet Mac contract. While it is entirely possible that they are making a device for Apple. - they would be in DEEP DODO for leaking that information. So, more than likely, they aren't. Well at least the guy from C|Net doesn't know if they are.
The number one rule about making products for Apple is you don't talk about making products for Apple. Steve Jobs has pulled whole product lines for much much less. That reputation is well known from Cupertino to Shanghai. And if you've been building stuff for Apple for more than a few years (Like ASUS has), you know - even if it has to be translated to Mandarin - that

WiebeTech HotPlug lets cops move desktops without shutting them down
We've seen some interesting computer forensics gear from WiebeTech before, like the Mouse Jiggler USB key that prevents a system from locking the screen or going to sleep by subtly shaking the mouse cursor, and the company's latest addition to the investigator's toolkit, the HotPlug LT, solves an equally basic problem: how to move a desktop without powering it down. The HotPlug allows cops to seize machines without powering them down by switching power to a UPS, using some interesting power-management voodoo. The investigator simply plugs the HotPlug into the computer's powerstrip, and then unplugs the strip and plugs it into the UPS -- and takes the whole system away. If the machine is plugged directly into the wall, WiebeTech also has options for directly piercing th

Sure, a Google-sponsored phone OS in the way of Android is pretty great news for mobile phone land, but what if your really had your heart set on some Google hardware this Monday morning? Well take heart, because Forbes has the skinny on an HTC device labeled "Dream," (most likely not pictured above) which could very well be oft-rumored hardware of legend, and could also be hitting the market as early as next year. Apparently the phone is one of roughly five prototypes that Google had built to demonstrate the Open Handset Alliance software to potential members, and HTC's Peter Chou says in the two years it's b

Palm: assimilate with Android or die

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/tech_news/Engadget_to_Palm_assimilate_with_Android_or_die'; Make no mistake, Google dropped a bombshell all over the mobile industry today with today's Android announcement. Those following every twist and turn of the Optimus Maximus keyboard have plenty to sink their teeth into on the always dependable optimus_project LiveJournal today, including the tantalizing detail of a soon-to-be-announced sub-$500 model. More details on that (and a sub-$1,000 model) will apparently be coming next week, when each will also supposedly be available for pre-order. E-TEN announces the Glofiish X600
We'd heard rumors about the Glofiish X600 last month, and now E-TEN's made it official. The red and black WinMo 6 handset isn't going to blow anyone's mind, but it's a solid addition to the Glofiish lineup: 2.8-inch QVGA screen, 2 megapixel cam, quad-band GSM (no 3G, though), GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth. No word on price, but E-TEN says we'll be seeing these hit in mid-November -- just enough time for us to get settled in with the now-shipping X800.[Via Slashp

NewEgg mistakenly ships out five Eee PCs for the price of one
Filed under: Laptops
Apparently, Asus' Eee PC is so small, even NewEgg's atypically quick fulfillment crew couldn't believe that five of these things could fit into a single cardboard shipping box, so they just decided to slap labels on entire cases and let 'em rip. Truth be told, there's no telling how nor why a number of users on the EeeUser.com forums were initially sent five machines for the price of one, but judging by a list of reports and even an accompanying picture, 'tis true. Supposedly, NewEgg caught on to what was happening and began turning shipments around befo

Google's Android platform and the Open Handset Alliance: a quick round-up
Filed under: Cellphones, HandheldsCarefully orchestrated announcements for broad, sweeping initiatives like the one staged by Google today don't always do a great job of diving straight into the meat and telling it like it is, so we thought we'd boil down the Android and Open Handset Alliance sitch as best we could into a tight, easy to digest series of bullets. Boy hires hitman to kill parents after grounding denies PlayStation, TV
Filed under: GamingWe've certainly gotten cranky after being denied some quality gaming time, but 16-year-old Cory Ryder took it to the next level by attempting to hire a hitman to kill his parents after they took away his PlayStation and denied him television. Seems young Cory had been making threats around the house, so his mom hired a cop to pose as a hitter -- and Cory took the bait, offering up his dad's truck as payment. After a couple rounds of "negotiations," the officer revealed himself and arrested Cory for attempted murder, for which he's now awaiting trial. Of course, you'd think that having a hitman conveniently show up after you'd been threatening to kill your parents might set off an alarm or two, but Cory's apparently not the brightest bulb around -- his PlayStation was

New iTunes hints at iPhone disk use and voice memos?
Filed under: CellphonesIf you hadn't heard, iTunes 7.5 hit today, and while we were all busy yawning at the seemingly insignificant update, MacRumors Forums user "FreeState" was checking out some localized strings and tracked down a few gems. While 4320.073 teases that "Enabling the iPhone for disk use requires manually ejecting the iPhone before each disconnect, even when automatically syncing music." We can live with those demands. Mr. 4320.075 is a bit more generic, but 4320.082 is the sexiest of the bunch: "The iPhone "^1" contains new voice memos. Would you like to move these voice memos

Apple to be bigger than Google?
We really haven't thought about it much but Google is in a bit of a slump lately. The GPhone? Nonexistant and just an SDK. OpenSocial is more like a Facebook fighter. And Search/Advertising is maturing fast. Google Docs are great but not really being updated with features businesses need and monetized properly.
Meanwhile Apple is hitting all of its numbers and coming out with hit after hit -out innovating and out business modeling its competition.
Jordan Golson at Valleywag is thinking that exact thing. Except he did it first.
Well, one thing that is a known is that poor Eric Schmidt is going to be rich no matter what.

Fairly significant data loss bug found and illustrated in Leopard
Slashdot sends us to Tom Karpik who illustrates very plainly a significant bug in Leopard. It turns out that if you are moving data to an SMB (Windows) Share and the connection to that share is lost, the data you are moving which hasn't already been copied is gone forever. It isn't on the Mac and isn't on the Share. (Update - it turns out that this is true for a lot of shares - USB/Firewire etc - and has been the case in previous Mac OS's)
Tom does an excellent job of demonstrating why this happens - which is basically that Apple deletes the data as it is being copied.
It is possible that this is due to the last minute changes in Time Machine which originally allowed user

Especially with 5.0 Ghz (which used to be used in 802.11A) 802.11N only mode for its cutting through the household devices interference and Gigabit Ethernet for wired devices.

Scientists develop sticky tape inspired by insect feet
Filed under: Misc. GadgetsBlack gaffer tape might be about to get a run for its money as our fix-it of choice -- researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, in collaboration with a team at Carnegie Mellon, are working on a new type of tape that gets its stick from a pattern of microscopic ridges modeled after insect feet. The two teams studied over 300 insects to develop the tape, which can be reused hundreds of times before losing its stickiness then simply washed in soapy water to regain its initial grip. Tests of the tape have enabled a 4-ounce robot to climb walls, and the team says that although it'll never be as cheap or as strong as regular old Scotch, the product they've nicknamed "insect tape" will be reasonably cheap to

iTunes 7.5, QuickTime 7.3 erschienen
It is possible that this is due to the last minute changes in Time Machine which originally allowed user

iPod-Spiel: Phase - Your Music Is The Game

Text-Bausteine für Fehlermeldungen und Hinweise deuten die vom iPod her bekannte Nutzung als Festplatte ("Enabling the iPhone for disk use requires manually ejecting the iPhone before each disconnect, even when automatically syncing music.") oder die Funktion als Diktiergerät ("The iPhone ^1 contains new voice memos. Would you like to move these voice memos to your iTunes library?") an. (via MacRumors: Forums)

The SCPH-90000 with integrated power adapter hits Japan on November 22nd for ¥16,000 or about $140 -- that's the same price as the SCPH-79000 model already available. ¥1,500 (about $13) will buy you the optional vertical stand. Besides that internal power supply, we're not seeing anything new. Hurting for gaming profits are we Sony? Oh, right. [Via I4U]

Microsoft says goodbye to the social
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video
AdAge has a piece profiling the "180" Microsoft made in marketing the Zune; many have already seen this year's far less, shall we say, esoteric ads, but few (including us) realized the new hardware's marketing onslaught was the result of Microsoft's doubling -- even quadrupling -- its Zune ad budget, switching advertising firms (which resulted in those trippy Flash sites), and, oh yeah, killing off "the social". Sorry obsessive Zune guy, we hate to be the bearers of bad news but the truth can be hidden

Number 4320.069 asks if you're "sure you want to manually manage your music on your iPhone?" Yeah, we're sure.

Boy hires hitman to kill parents after being denied PlayStation

If this list is still wider than your attention span, though, just know this: you can pick up your Google-powered phone in the latter half of 2008.
