Truphone demos VoIP for iPhone
Are you ready to have your brain go flying out of the back of your skull? If you said yes, be prepared to lose your mind repeatedly. One of the Holy Grails / Seven Wonders of the iPhone World has been loosed upon the Earth today, namely: VoIP. According to a company called Truphone, they have unlocked the secret of IP telephony on the iPhone, and demonstrated said ability today at DEMOfall 07 in San Diego. LaCie unveils 500GB silverscreen multimedia hard drive

Remember that measly 40GB silverscreen from years past? Thankfully, LaCie has finally found time to upgrade that thing to a much more stylish creation, complete with a half terabyte of built-in storage space (or 320GB if you're short on cash). The USB 2.0-based unit still features DivX compatibility and plug 'n plug operation with your television, and it even plays nice with JPEG / MP3 formats as well as offering up an optical digital audio output for Dolby Digital 5.1 support. Target offers up pink iPod shuffle Special Edition
Filed under: Portable Audio
With little fanfare a new iPod package has made its way onto Target shelves in the name of cancer. The pink shuffle -- which may or may not be different than the hot pink model from the last-gen shuffles -- comes packaged with a $15 iTunes Gift Card, courtesy of Target, who is donating a portion of the proceeds to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, totalling $25,000. Happily, the player maintains its $79 price tag, so barring an aversion to pink or cancer cures, you've really got no reason not to seek one of these out. They're

iPhone Hacking Roundup
So with the steep price drop and the hacking community going nuts on the iPhone, we thought it'd be a good idea to start getting into it. Rather than risk our day to day 8Gb iPhone (which was paid for by the day job), we took advantage of the $200 price cut and snapped up a 4Gb iPhone for $300.
Since I work WAAAY outside AT&T's coverage range (Paris) and don't feel like being one of those $3000/month AT&T customers who receive 500 page bills, I've decided to get a bit pirate on our little 4Gb beauty.
I wanted to go from end to end without touching AT&T. I was hoping to not have to pay for iPhoneSimFree but worst case scenario I will settle - it looks like it is going for $50 right now from the Australian carrier. We've found a good roundup

Hidden Feature Makes iPodtouch and iPhone Physical Storage Limitations (a bit) Obsolete
The iPodtouch's physical storage limitation of 16GB enraged a lot of people. Why? Most were worried that they wouldn't be able to store much of the video that they wanted to watch on their beautiful new 480x320 screens. However, Apple allows you to play movies over the net. Don't believe us? Point your iPhone/iPodtouch browser over to:http://www.apple.com/trailers/iphone
Yep. Links to Quicktime movies. Full 480x320. Full stereo sound and amazing video clarity. They also start up right away and play fully without having to catch up if you are on relatively speedy Wifi enabled Internet connection.

British iPhone on O2 Announcement Next Week
It looks all but certain that Apple will announce its first European iPhone carrier next week. And some bad news for y'all across the pond (or Channel as it were), it is not going to be carried by Vodafone who is currently launching an iTunes competitor (and whose CTO recently publicly dissed the iPhone). It will most likely be carried by O2 only.
It remains to be seen what effect, if any, the recent iPhone hacking will have on the selection of iPhone carriers. Apple will probably have to secure its iPhone OS from these hacks if it expects to keep ex

Europe Going iPhone...Soon.
With Apple set to announce it's European iPhone strategy later this week, a lot of questions still remain on the specifics of the deal. What we know:
The carriers will be O2 in the UK, Tmobile in Germany, and Orange in France. Spain's Telefonica might also pick up the device because of the O2 relationship.
Even with the rampant SIM hacking, the devices will be locked to the carriers initially. Different Laws in Europe REQUIRE that device manufacturers open up their devices after 6 months of use. This might not be a huge issue as the phones are likely to be sold with 2 year plans.
Apple's UK announcement will likely open the iPod Touch floodgates as the employees have been asked to stay late the day of the announcement.
What we'd like to know:

Freely Hacking the iPhone
There are a lot of things that you can buy for $299. None could possibly be as exciting as a 4Gb iPhones that are being sold clearance from Apple???s website. Apple was even offering $50 discounts for refurbished products. Not bad for the world's best iPod and phone combination that were going for about double the price a few weeks ago.
Add to that the news that iPhone hackers have found a way to not only activate the iPhones without buying a two year plan from AT&T, but also allowing you to use a SIM card from any GSM provider in the US and abroad. Since this sounded too good to be true and

Note to Apple: Europeans Have Internet, Have Seen This Before
Wow! I'm not European, but I play one on TV. I cannot imagine that Europeans are going to be too impressed by the "Event" at the Regent Street Apple Store today. What was announced comes down to this:
Announced the exact same iPhone announced 9 months ago in the US and rolled out 3 months ago
Will be out in 2 MORE months
Significant extra cost (blame the weak dollar and 17.5% VAT?)
Limited EDGE Internet
Limited Unlimited Bandwidth
EDGE coverage is at 30% of UK
Acknowledged that there are fewer hotspot options in Europe

VNC for iPhone, Now it is Getting Interesting
A very interesting application just hit my iPhone's installer.app repository. VNSea, the port of the venerable VNC Client that is used in many remote desktop installations, including Apple's own Remote Desktop. Although the application doesn't appear to be working too well - we got just a flash of the desktop before the application crashed - the possibilities are endless for VNC client like this.
Controlling a home computer or server from the road would give access to unlimited amounts of applications and data. This is definitely something to look out for.

iPhone Announced in Germany, No Surprises
Apple today announced their alliance with German (former) state telco Tmobile for the German market. Tmobile will have EDGE on 100% of its network by the end of 2007 (oh and probably some 3G too?) and of course it has a bazillion Wifi hotspots around the World. No mention of whether or not the iPhone plan with Tmobile will include access at any of them like the UK's O2's offering.
The price is a respectable ???399 which is about a 40% premium over the US model before taxes. We should hear the French model announced at this pricepoint on Orange shortly.
It is going to be hard to say Tmobile is the best network in Germany but not in the US or the UK where they got beat by other carriers - it looks like they've skirted the issue by not having a press conference and issuing the statement here an

Navizon iPhone GPS: the Amazing Hacker Development Continues
I feel like it is Christmas every time I open my iPhone installer.app lately. Along with VNSea, NES and MobileChat, here comes another AMAZING developer-hacker application. I don't see Apple having 1/2 of this stuff by the time the next release is out. AS a matter of fact, I don't see a lot of hacked iPhones going legit any time soon.
Back to Navizon: Using both cellular triangulation and a DB of Wifi hotspots and ISP IP addresses, Navizon is able to provide a semi-accurate view of where you are at a much faster rate than most GPS systems. Granted the accuracy of the device depends on a lot of factors, and your results may, of course vary.
The Navizon.app also just throws your coordinates into the Maps application and puts a little pin where it thinks you are. So, so clever. In my informal tests, i

Slim Aluminum MacBooks Coming Soon from Apple
We have received some information about the upcoming Apple laptops - we think they are MacBooks but aren't 100 percent sure they aren't the fabled Pro slim line. What we know:
Black aluminum and silver aluminum (like MacBook Pros) have been seen
They are considerably slimmer than current MacBook and even a bit more than MacBook Pros
The screen reaches much closer to the edges than current MacBooks but is the same size as current MacBooks - indicating a somewhat smaller footprint
The keyboards resemble Apple's new Bluetooth Keyboard
There is something strange about the touchpad (more on this to come)
They are set to be priced extremely aggressively
While they are dense, overall they are lighter than the current MacBooks

How Come No One Noticed There Was No Mention of DVD in the New MacBook?
So when we got the news from Cleve and his source about the new laptops, the first thing we asked ourselves was how is Apple going to squeeze all of the laptop internals into such a thin Package? Battery optimization? Couldn't hurt. Making the boot drive into NAND RAM? Possible but still very expensive. Motherboard optimization? Yeah sure but you can only save so much space doing that. Then it hit us: was the MacBook DVD going the way of the dodo?
When you consider the facts, it is a no-brainer. What is the largest part of the internals of a laptop and at the same time (as trends go) is used less and less - not to mention its status as a powerhog. What could the average laptop certainly do without&

Future iPhone/iPod Update to Allow Seamless Websurfing in Starbucks?

That is a lot of coverageand in very important, high trafficked areas like malls, city streets, and college campuses. You could almost call them a "wifi telecom"

Is Apple Forking the iPhone?
Apple today released an ominous statement that the iPhone updates "might" brick SIM unlocked phones. This wasn't wholey unexpected but now there are a few clearer roads down which unlocked iPhone users are going to have to navigate. There are different hacks to the iPhone, but we'll assume that Apple is addressing not just the SIM unlockers but the jailbreakers as well.
First of all, we have to consider the seriousness of this threat by Apple. The company conspicuously didn't release the threat on their own PR webpage but through other media outlets - if that is any indication. They also didn't promise one way or the other if it would break the software. &

Mobile Micro Wifi Router
Just a random observation here but I can't help myself. Why in the world doesn't some company come out with a PAN (Personal Area Network) device that turns 3G wireless to Wifi? Something that would take a mobile signal and turn it into a very low powered (enough for maybe 6 foot radius) Wifi zone for all of my devices.
It doesn't have to be 802.11G or N - it could be the incredibly low powered 802.11b electronics that are pervasive in super-small mobile phones like the iPhone. The bottleneck in speed isn't going to be the Wifi. At least not this year. Cost-wise, an unlimited data plan is about $80/month these days. I can handle that.
Think of it. You get to use all of your wifi devices, computer, cell phone, tablet etc anywhere you go. It is always on and is very small. It would only sign on when you tried to access the

Nokia's DVD-3800 player -- is this for real?

We know the rebadging / knockoff fiends have kicked out some seriously stupefying gear in the past, but we just find it (mighty) hard to believe that Nokia is actually venturing into the DVD player market. Nevertheless, a tipster reportedly snapped the above shot whilst out in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and while one may assume that the player was simply some other firm's "DVD-3800" with a Nokia emblem, both Denon a

A leisurely cruise took curious onlookers down the Chicago River while Moto demonstrated a variety of WiMAX-friendly goodies like VoIP and streaming video, with handoffs flawlessly (apparently) transitioning the signal from access point to access point amongst canyons of skyscrapers, steel, and cement. Apple Store Update
Last night, the European Apple Stores were closed for a while. The same transpired with the online stores in the American continents.
Although some hoped for a product freshening, there weren't any. Apple merely made some maintenance and modifications to its sites while arranging that the impact on their clients would be minimized as much as possible. One visible change is that the US store now sports a blue interface.

The Urballoon art installation has a message for you

What is it about art and technology? People just can't get enough of it, and yet, it hardly ever seems to be any good. Far be it from us to pass judgment, however, on the Urballoon -- an "urban media space" wherein a balloon hovers three stories in the air, equipped with a projector and a wireless connection. The balloon / projector is used to "broadcast" images or text sent to it via a website onto the ground below. Anyone can hop on the page and create a message for the balloon, so we'll assume they have very good profanity filters. The artist behind the project, Carlos J. Gómez de Llarena, says that the Urballoon, "Seeks to juxtapose emerging notions of mobility, P2P networking, syndication and

Amazon Store is Beginning of the End of iTunes Dominance
Yeah we said it. It needed to be said. iTunes, you've finally met your match. All of the iTunes competitors to this point have been extremely flawed in one way or another but one company that understands consumers as well, if not better, than Apple is doing it right. As Apple fans, we hope this rattles more than just a little bit the cage that is the iTunes music store. In fact, until things change at Apple, we are onto Amazon.
Amazon Music Store specs:

Apple is the Cat
"It's a constant cat and mouse game -- we have the same thing with the iPod with music." Steve looks at O2's CEO, "Are we the cat or mouse? We have to stay one step ahead of them." - Steve Jobs at the O2 iPhone unveiling in London
YEAH RIGHT. Apple today further solidified its position as the BIG FEROCIOUS CAT today by taking out the webserver where the iPod Touch software was to be placed. Exactly what is in there that is so secret is on everyone's mind. This latest move will only spark the curiosity of many more little mouse hackers.
Does anyone else see this ending the way every Tom and Jerry cartoon ended (no not the Hannah Barbara one's where they were friends)?

Neuestes Opfer: Steve Jobs. Kostprobe gefällig? Der Apple-Chef wird "beschuldigt", seit zwanzig Jahren O.J. Vivendi Universal - Apple: iTunes Contract is Indecent

"The split between Apple and (music) producers is indecent Our contracts give too good a share to Apple," In other words Vivendi thinks that 0.70 euro out of 0.99 euro price per track is not enough (more than 75%!), while Apple is responsible for promoting and distributing the digital music store, and of course maintaining the hardware and software infrastructure.
Vivendi is probably openly pressuring Apple to renegotiate iTunes contract terms. Of course, Apple will most likely try to keep Vivendi catalog on its iTunes Store, knowing that the same catalog is currently available as a DRM-free offer from almost all iTunes competitors. Apple Expo: The Missing iPhone
Many Mac users are happy to see and enjoy a Paris Apple Expo mostly dedicated to the Mac and hardware in general. Visitors are spending more time with application developers and testing software and hardware for home and/or business purpose.
On the other side, the iPod Touch, being demoed on Apple booth, attracts many customers; but the missing product is the iPhone. People never talked some much about a product not available, and according to our sources, relationship between Apple and Orange are as cold as ice, even though, Orange launched a massive and intensive training session for all its business task force to be ready right on time for the introduction of the iPhone by mid-November in France.

The acquisition, expected to be approved before the year is up, gives EchoStar access to more displays and more locations thanks to Sling's streaming solutions in and outside of the home. Sony's iMac-ish VAIO VGC-LT19U reviewed
Filed under: Desktops, HDTV, Home EntertainmentSure, Sony's been kickin' out iMac-like machines for some time now, but the firm's latest all-in-one desktop made a pit-stop by the PCMag labs in order to get critiqued. The sleek, stylish VAIO VGC-LT19U fared pretty well, and the built-in Blu-ray burner, dazzling 22-inch panel and satisfactory integrated speakers were all given a thumbs-up. Granted, you won't find any drool-worthy hardware on the CPU / GPU fronts, but the machine was s
