iTunes 7.4.1: Block Ringtones Creator
Couple of hours after the release of iTunes 7.4, Apple announced iTunes 7.4.1 with no further information than those provided for the previous version. We suspect this update to prevent the procedure preventing users to easily generate ringtones from their music tracks in iTunes. One only needed to duplicated the file, then rename its extension from .m4a to .m4r. Then, you could synchronize your iPhone, and ringtones will be accepted.
Indeed, after installing iTunes 7.4.1, such trick does not work anymore; and we suspect Apple to act on purpose to limit such procedure for creating ringtones, in order to keep selling ringtones. We would be interested to know according to EU regulations, how a company could prevent a user to create a ringtone from a music track purchased legally. If a lawyer read those lines, he/she can drop me an email (linathael at macbidouille dot com)

Hands-on with Alienware's Hangar18:HD media server
Filed under: Desktops, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Media PCs
The only notable machine from Alienware that made the trip to Denver was the Hangar18:HD, and yes, this thing looks just as swank in person as it does in the press shots. Of course, you may have to reinforce your AV cabinet before plopping this hefty

How would you change the Segway?
Believe it or not, it's been almost six years since Dean Kamen's highly-anticipated, mysterious "IT" project was revealed to be the Segway personal transporter, yet far from fundamentally revolutionizing the way we get from here to there as the pre-release hype would have had us believe, you'd be hard-pressed to spot one of these pricey gadgets anywhere outside of a few golf courses or in a certain Apple founder's garage. Alienware's CEDIA booth tour
Filed under: Desktops, Home Entertainment, Laptops, Media PCs
Alienware was just barely at CEDIA, but it did a respectable job with the ridiculously small amount of square footage it was granted. So if you're craving a look at the firm's Hangar18 (and the Hangar18:HD), hit up the gallery right over here.

RIM experiencing another BlackBerry outage?
Filed under: CellphonesRuh roh, is RIM having another widespread BlackBerry outage? Reports are popping up all across the internets that since as early as this morning BlackBerry users have been unable to get their email on T-Mobile or AT&T, possibly other carriers. We've yet to hear anything solid either way, but we're sure Jim Basille is praying to the fair and equitable Gods of Push Email that this doesn't happen yet again. And we're sure many a young, connected couple's relationships are now standing in h

GeStream Technology's new robot challenges i-SOBOT's title
Filed under: Robots
i-SOBOT, long the holder of the "world's smallest bipedal robot," finally has a proper rival, in the form of GeStream Technology's 15-centimeter-tall gold-colored bot. The latest tiny robotic overlord has 16 degrees of "freedom," which computes to something like 65,536 possible movements, and will be sold in unassembled so that owners can customize the look and functionality of the miniscule bot. With the price rumored at around $185 to $200, the company is laying claim to the "smallest, lightest, and cheapest in the world," though it wouldn't be surprising to see those titles usurped by some like-mind

Two Samsung executives arrested for fraud in Thailand
Filed under: Misc. GadgetsWell, it's not as sexy as wrapping a Ferrari around a pole, but it's been a little quiet in the world of white-collar tech exec crime, so we'll take what we can get -- and what we've got is two Samsung executives getting arrested in Thailand for allegedly defrauding two different suppliers out of a total of $19M. Park Kwang-kee and Kim Chung-jun, Samsung's managing director and general manager in Thailand, got put in cuffs last night over what Samsung is characterizing as a "restructuring" that will "maybe [cause] some of our b

Hey, everyone getting amped about the Centro -- all seven of you (and yes, there are at least a couple Engadget staffers in that tight group) -- your wait might be a little longer than expected. Contrary to previous suggestions that Palm's European announcement on the 12th of September would be for that bizarre little beast with the tiny keyboard, Palm's Stephanie Richardson has posted a brief note on the official Palm blog to let everyone know th
