Hands-on with Panasonic's Strada CN-GP50N
Filed under: Features, GPS
We finally wrangled some Panasonic reps around midday, then promptly convinced them to let us take the Strada CN-GP50N GPS navigator for a spin in our hands. At a glance, the device comes off vaguely like a TomTom high-end model, or similarly-classed device, though we take a little issue with the kinda-sorta fugly UI, which produced violent 1997 flashbacks in the staff. Also, the interface seemed a bit slower than it should, with brief but noticeable pauses every now and again. Our word to Panasonic?Fix it up! Check out the gallery to see w

iPhone meltdown occurs during hardware hack
Filed under: Cellphones
Not that it doesn't completely go without saying, but whenever you start hacking any battery-powered portable device, you need to freaking be careful. Otherwise you might end up like dude here who was pulling a Geohot on his iPhone when short circuited and became red hot, releasing the magic smoke hither locked inside the device's electronics. Lesson learned: you take your phone, even your life, into your own hands when screwing with components, so be gentle and careful, will you?[Via

Philips's IFA booth tour
The word was white for Philips' showing at IFA. White, white, and more white. They also managed to throw just a few Aurea televisions up on the walls (to give it that colorful accent). Here's our walk-through of all the money-dripping action (including the off-limits-to-the-public press and dealer section, replete with sit-down cafe). Be sure to note the super-gigantic television, and the odd, colored block game that the company had people playing. Oh, and check out those swinging interpretive dancers showing you what the Philips product line feels like. Hit the gallery and take yourself on a magical journey.

First 25 RED ONE cameras ship
Alright HD enthusiasts and doubters, it seems the time has come: RED's finally shipping its first batch of RED ONE cameras (and lenses, and accessories, etc.). Ok, shipping isn't really the right term. The first group of RED ONE users all flew out to RED HQ in southern California to pick up their 4K cameras, and we can't say we're not jealous. We'll leave the rest to you to discover for yourself, once they start talking timecode and whatnot we tend to zone out.[Thanks, Jacob]

NBC hits back at Apple, claims it didn't want more money
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video
NBC, not content to let Apple have the last word, issued a counter-statement late yesterday clarifying that its departure from iTunes wasn't so much pricing related as, apparently, focused on an unwavering "request for flexibility in wholesale pricing, including the ability to package shows together in ways that could make our content even more attractive for consumers." That and tighter anti-piracy measures on Apple's part, "since it is estimated that the typical iPod contains a significant amount of illegally downloaded material." Right. This has exactly WHAT to do with legitimately selling shows to paying customers, NBC? We think this is the telling qu

IBM researchers get closer to nanotech hard drives

We're not going to front like we understand exactly how it works, but two IBM researchers in California have announced that they've gotten closer to controlling the orientation and magnetic spin of individual iron atoms on a copper surface, which would have huge implications for nanotech storage -- imagine the basic tech in your hard drive shrunk down the molecular level. At the same time, a different set of IBM researchers in Switzerland have discovered a way to make individual molecules act like "switches" without altering the framework of the molecule, which could lead to molecular logic circuits. IBM is reluctant to even hypothesize ways these discoveries could be appl

Uniea takes a gamble on iPod nano fatty, preemptively makes case for it

Let's get this out the way right here and now: to the best of our knowledge, Apple doesn't really provide pre-release units to accessories partners -- even the big ones -- to help them get their products out the door faster when new gear drops. Most cogent example? See the non-existent Made For iPhone accessories market -- accessories with their own electronics could have an 8-18 month lead time, so we still probably won't be seeing the first proper iPhone add-ons until closer to the holidays.Which is why it's so weird that Uniea

iPods: EOL - No More Units in Stocks
A report from Philippe:
We all know that the iPods are expected to be updated next week, and to confirm this expectation, the FNAC (Franch leader for consumer electronics shops) indicates that iPod nano, iPod 30 and 80GB are out of stock in France.
This comes to support expectation for seeing all iPod models renew, what remains unknown so far are specifications of the models to come.

iPhone SIM Unlocking Today?
Today, iphonesimfree should release its iPhone SIM unlocking application.
We could even have a free unlocking solution soon, as promised by a hackers group, "the Deathcorp team", on some forums.
In both cases, nothing is sure, only announcements, while it could also be the perfect timing for releasing a virus or any type of unfriendly trojan.

Sega Homestar Pro planetarium Winter Edition
Filed under: Household
We could think of quite a few things we'd rather be doing than gazing at stars projected on the ceilings of the Engadget HQ, but if your social life hasn't reached that higher plane, or perhaps has so far exceeded ours that planetariums are the hip new thing for your crowd, then by all means run out and pick up Sega Toys' Homestar Pro planetarium Winter Edition. The Homestar Pro Winter Edition squeezes together all the greatness that has been the Homestar series onto a sixe piece star disc set for a mere 36,540 yen ($315 US), and will be out on November 15th as a limited edition in Japan.

iToner makes adding iPhone ringtones ridiculously easy
Filed under: Cellphones
Want to add iPhone ringtones? iToner's your solution, it's the easiest (and most graphically purdy) method we've seen yet, and it works without even jailbreaking your iPhone. The down side (yeah, there's always a downside) is this simple utility could teach a course in Nagware 101, bugging you incessantly and imposing increasingly longer delays before carrying out its function until you buy the thing. Still, it's worth it if you've been waiting for an excuse not to use marimba anymore. We'd just suggest waiting until next Wednesday before making the buy, we hear Apple might just do this thing themselv

Third iPhone software SIM unlock team claims September 1st release
Filed under: CellphonesThe two big teams claiming iPhone software SIM unlock solutions (iPhoneSIMfree and UniquePhones) have been a bit mum of late, but while iPhoneSIMfree's hack is supposedly due by tomorrow, you just might have a free (as in beer) alternative -- if you're the type to believe the hype you read on internet forums. Hands-on with the Sony BDP-S500 Blu-ray player
Filed under: Features, Home Entertainment
It's not like it's too big of a deal, but we happened by this new Blu-ray player from Sony while we were on our mass-wanderings amongst the gadgetry at IFA, and we thought we'd share a few images. Really nothing to write home about, though it does have a snazzy sliding front panel (the one that appears mirrored) -- but we couldn't say what that panel's function actually is. Maybe you can figure it out, so have a look at the gallery.Gallery:

Hands-on with Sanyo's Xacti DMX-HD1000, the world's smallest 1080p camcorder
Filed under: Digital Cameras, Features
Ever wanted a full, 1080p camcorder that looked just like the Super-8 your dad used to shoot sun-soaked home movies with back in the 1970s? Well, you're in luck, because Sanyo seems to be sharing your nostalgic vibes this year, particularly in the case of the Xacti DMX-HD1000, the world's tiniest, full-HD video camera. We got our chance to manhandle this minuscule (yet powerful) camcorder at IFA today and honestly, it's like holding a gun a memory gun. Deep, right? Take a look at the totally ill photo gallery and let us know your thoughts on the matter.

Sony adds Bluetooth to fresh line of nav-u GPS units
Filed under: GPS
GPS without hands-free calling is hardly worth its weight in silicon these days, and Sony is getting in on the game in Europe with its new nav-u personal navigation devices. The 4.8-inch NV-U93T (pictured) and NV-U83 in particular are getting the new Bluetooth functionality. The U93T bests its peer with a broad selection of Europe maps, and live traffic info, the latter of which is optional with the U83. You can control either device with "Gesture Command," which allows you to scribble symbols on the screen and be presented with directions home or to the nearest gas station. If you're not quite ready to take the Bluetooth plunge, Sony also has the 4.3-inch NV-U73T and N

Know Your Rights: What to do when the RIAA comes calling

Disclaimer: Although this post was written by an attorney, it is not meant as legal advice or analysis and should not be taken as such.Preface: There's been a lot of discussion about the RIAA's, shall we say "controversial" (and we're being generous here) tactics in suing P2P users who download copyrighted content; especially this week, what with the EFF releasing its "RIAA v. The People: Four Years Later" report. But it's never been easy to find information about

Now with CEDIA coming up, a promo image of what could be the next evolution in this design has been leaked, the HR21 Pro. The DVR will reportedly handle 100 hours of high-def recording and output it at 1080p over optical HDMI, but lacks any over-the-air antenna inputs, probably due to DirecTV's
