Earlier this year, Inventec was raided as prosecutors began looking for evidence to support charges of alleged insider trading, and now it looks like nine of the firm's employees could be headed to the slammer. Taiwan's Banciao District Prosecutors Office "alleged that nine executives and one lower level employee failed to publi

Corsair releases "Flash Padlock" PIN-based flash drive
Filed under: Storage
Innovation in the flash drive sphere seems to be limited to bringing the price down, and adding on new security features. Corsair's new "Flash Padlock" flash drive seemingly does both, by retailing at $29.99 and $39.99 in 1GB and 2GB variants, and tacking on a PIN based security system that limits who can access the drive. The benefit to the Flash Padlock is that its security solution is entirely hardware based, so it's supposedly impervious to hackers and crackers and other deviant folk: the downside is that if your computer's USB ports are out of reach, then t

Windows Home Server coming August 27th?
C'mon, don't act surprised -- it's not like you didn't know Windows Home Server was on the home stretch. Nevertheless, if a date promimently listed on Microsoft's own Support Lifecycle website is to be believed, WHS will be "generaly available" on August 27, 2007, and it also lists the mainstream support retirement date as September 10, 2012. Of course, we wouldn't place our bets on pre-fabricated boxes to star

eKey's biometric entry system converts your fingers into keys
Filed under: HouseholdBiometric door locks are far from new, but eKey's Biometric Entry System ups the ante over traditional iterations by putting more than just one of your digits to work. The Bio-View biometric access system enables your various fingers to control different tasks, meaning that swiping your index finger could open or lock a door, while your middle finger controls the

The noise-canceling headphones rock the classic DJ style and feature a frequency response of 20Hz - 20kHz, as well side-mounted controls for the X-Fi modes, which Creative claims restores audio information lost during digital compression. No word on pricing or availability, but Creative isn't shy about getting its products

Watashi-chan sound-activated inflatable clothing lets you simulate a blowfish
Filed under: Wearables
We're not going to claim to understand this, but you know how we love inflatable clothes -- which means we can't help but be intrigued by this entry into the Ima-karada art show in Japan, the Watashi-chan sound-activated inflatable shirt. Designed by Tomoko Ueyama, the outfit responds to six frequency bands of sound -- including one inaudible by human ears -- by inflating a corresponding balloon for one second. Since this is purely an art project, it's not meant to be useful, but that doesn't mean we don't want one.[Via

New search engine "listens" to music to help you find new tunes
Filed under: Misc. GadgetsPeer-recommendation services like Last.fm and Pandora are pretty good at leveraging the power of the community to help you discover new music, but a recent grant from the National Science Foundation to the College of Charleston aims to take the concept to the next level, by creating a search engine that "listens" to music and creates critical comparisons between works. The system, as described by Ars Technica, involves a neural network that is trained to recognized the composer and style of music, an evaluation engine that's supposed to simulate human taste, and a set o

Baka RoboCup competition pits robotic comedians against each other
Filed under: RobotsAlthough RoboCup 2007 provided a number of thrills, there's certainly more trash talking going on than chuckling during the heated competitions. Thankfully, a new contest reportedly rigged up by entertainment giant Yoshimoto Kogyo will look to give the comedians in the mechanical crowd a chance to compete, too. After judges whittle down the entries, the Baka RoboCup will apparently give eight robotic comedians the chance to make an audience laugh this November, with the winner (er, winner's creator) taking home a modest ¥500,000

Researchers using pulses of light to quickly decipher codes

The crew has apparently discovered that by "using pulses of light to dramatically accelerate quantum computers," these systems could not only crack "highly encrypted codes" in moments versus years, but it could also "lead to tougher protection of [sensitive] information."
