Redsn0w 0.9.8b7 jailbreak tutorials available
Good news for jailbreakers running iOS 5 Beta 7, latest version of Redsn0w will let you jailbreak your newly updated iOS device. While Redsn0w 0.9.8b7 was released for iOS beta 6, it does suport beta 7. This jailbreak works with any iOS device, except the iPad 2.
There's a few points to keep in mind when jailbreaking iOS 5 beta 7. First, it's a tethered jailbreak so you'll have to connect your iOS device to your computer every time you restart your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Secondly, the Redsn0w utility was released right before iOS 5 beta 7 and is off by a version. To jailbreak, iOS 5 beta 7, you'll have to point Redsn0w to the IPSW for beta 6 if you want it to work. C

Starz breaks with Netflix, plans to pull content February 28
Netflix took a large hit on Thursday after Starz said it had broken off talks to renew a content deal. Under current conditions, the TV channel provider would pull the movies and other pay TV content it licenses out to Netflix on February 28, 2012. Its statement tried to portray Netflix as cheapening its service and that it was purportedly doing its content a service by shopping for deals elsewhere.

Samsung Galaxy Wi-Fi 3.6 arrives to face iPod touch
Hidden amidst some of Samsung's large launches at the IFA show Thursday was a new, smaller version of its Android-based media players. The Galaxy Wi-Fi 3.6 has a more moderate 3.65-inch LCD versus the large AMOLED displays of its Wi-Fi 4.0 and 5.0. Its central home button design, unique in Android, continues over from earlier models and gives it a look closer to the iPod touch.

Doodle Jump for iPad available later today
Doodle Jump, the wildly successful iPhone platforming game, is at last coming out with an iPad version. Doodle Jump for iPad should be launching on the App Store later today according to developer Lima Sky.
The game features the same addictive jumping and shooting gameplay as the iPhone original, but optimized for the iPad's much larger screen. The playing field is a great deal wider than that on the iPhone, both horizontally and vertically, which in my testing has meant I've been able to achieve much higher scores than anything I've gotten on the iPhone version.

OCZ RevoDrive Hybrid merges 100GB SSD with 1TB HDD for $499
We heard about OCZ's clever crossbreed a few months ago, but couldn't be sure about pricing for this premium model. Turns out, it's significantly less than we'd guessed: $499 for a 100GB SSD and 1TB HDD happily united on a single PCI Express card. Toshiba shows off three HD-capable Camileo camcorders
Toshiba UK is making more product debuts at IFA, this time with three new camcorders. They include the tiny Camileo Clip and the larger Camileo X200 and Camileo X400. All three shoot 1080p HD video and can take still images. There is no built-in memory, with all relying on SD cards (microSD in the Clip).

Apple issues Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.8
Apple has posted Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.8, a new add-on for OS X Lion and Snow Leopard. The download expands the number of native RAW formats supported by iPhoto '11 and Aperture 3. RAW files represent unprocessed photo data, unlike the JPEGs many cameras default to.

IFA 2011: HTC Radar und HTC Titan im Hands-On (Video)

HTC hat heute Abend zwei neue Windows Phones vorgestellt, das Radar (links) und das Titan (rechts). Die beiden neuen Modelle laufen mit dem lang erwarteten Mango-Update, also Windows Phone 7.5. Sowohl die Hardware als auch das Design bieten wenig Überraschungen. 1GHz-Prozessor, 800x480er-Displays (die allerdings beide einen sehr guten Eindruck machen), 8 bzw. 5 Megapixeln auf den rückseitigen Kameras, 512MB RAM. Mango läuft extrem flüssig, das INterface scheint uns noch einen Tick poppiger und hipper zu sein. Interessante Geräte. Wann beide bei uns in den Handel kommen, konnten wir noch nicht in Erfahrung bringen, ebenso die Preise. Unsere Videos warten hinter dem Klick.

Sprint-backed study says AT&T, T-Mobile deal would lose jobs
Sprint went on the offensive Thursday and endorsed a study (below) challenging AT&T's claims that buying T-Mobile would create jobs. The 'independent' study, handled by UC Irvine Economics professor and Center for Economics and Public Policy director David Neumark, rejected the idea that the capital investments made by AT&T would lead to more jobs after a merger. Navigon has announced the second generation of mobile navigation apps which include a major screen redesign and a host of new features.
The new versions of the apps will be free for current owners, but some features will involve in-app purchases. The new GUI supports multi-touch gestures and easy switching between pages. Points of interest can be added to a route with a tap.
Extra cost features will include quarterly map updates. Users who, for example, own the USA version can select the states they want immediately and download additional regions at a later time. It got a bit overshadowed by the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab 7.7 earlier today, but Samsung also quietly introduced a new basic handheld / PMP at IFA: the Galaxy S WiFi 3.6. Pirate Bay founders launch 'copyright respecting' BayFiles sharing site, still dream of a life on Sealand
It ain't often that the hated few have a genuine change of heart, but it sounds as if the folks who founded The Pirate Bay are tired of sailing the same seas. After years of turning a blind eye to content mavens across the globe, Fredrik Neij and co. have launched what appears to be a legitimate file-sharing site -- one that's "respectful of copyrights." iPhone 4 prototype theft suspects plead not guilty
The two remaining suspects in involved in the theft of an iPhone 4 prototype last year have plead not guilty, says CNET. Both Brian Hogan and Robert Sage Wallower are charged with misdemeanor theft; Wallower faces an additional accusation of possessing stolen property. Hogan is believed to have found the prototype in a Redwood City bar, left there accidentally by Apple engineer Robert Gray Powell.

For the third weekend in a row Apple opening three more stores
This weekend will mark the third time Apple has opened three stores in as many weeks. That's nine new stores in only three weeks -- quite an expansion and, you guessed it, almost a third of the 30 new Apple Store's the company plans to open this quarter.
The new stores opening this weekend are all international ones. The three stores all open this Saturday, September 3. The first is the Campania store in Naples, Italy. It's doors open at 10AM and will be the first of Apple's seven Italian stores to open south of Rome. Then at 9:30 AM in Augsburg, Germany the City-Galerie store opens. Rutgers makes iPad 2 core part of some management courses
Rutgers University has made the iPad 2 an integral part of its Digital Mini-MBA program. HTC unveils Titan, Radar in second go-round at Windows Phone
HTC launched itself back into Windows Phone support at its special event Thursday with two new models. Topping the group, the Titan (once codenamed the Eternity) is the biggest Windows Phone ever and has a 4.7-inch (albeit 480x800) touchscreen in a relatively slim 0.39-inch unibody frame. It confirms front camera support in the Mango update to the OS and has both a 1.3-megapixel front camera along with the rear eight-megapixel piece.

IFA 2011: LG Pentouch-TV

LG hat auf der IFA sein neues Pentouch-TV vorgestellt, ein Multimedia-Fernseher mit Touch-Modus, der sich mit einem Stylus bedienen lässt. Bis zu zwei Stifte werden unterstützt, neben Fernsehen und Malen mit der mitgelieferten Software lassen sich auch PC-Inhalte auf dem Bildschirm bearbeiten und man kann im Netz surfen. Lodsys starts targeting BlackBerry developers
Lodsys has widened the scope of its patent trolling to include BlackBerry developers, new accounts revealed late Wednesday. At least Lonely Turret developer Rotten Ogre has been targeted for selling apps in the US with in-app purchases. It hasn't been sued but has faced Lodsys' common strategy, where it offers a licensing deal knowing that the developer can't afford to challenge the legitimacy of the patents in question, the Globe and Mail said.

QuarkXPress 9.1 brings App Studio, App Factory
Quark has posted QuarkXPress 9.1, an update to the company's flagship publishing suite. The main addition is the App Studio, used to produce iPad publications and publish them to the App Store. The process begins with a new layout space inside QuarkXPress, which supports vertical and horizontal iPad orientations, and adding audio, images, slideshows and video. Meizu tablet case patent application hints at slate plans
Like most other mobile companies out there, it appears Meizu is looking to branch out from cellphones to tablets. It's a little too early to say for sure what the manufacturer's plans are, but a recent patent filing by Jo Young Soo, Meizu's lead designer, with China's SIPO (State Intellectual Property Office) gives a hint that a slate may be in the works. The application isn't for a tablet, per se, but for a protective case that holds a tablet and keyboard. Apple posts sample Twitter code for iOS 5 developers
Apple has made sample Twitter code available to iOS developers, checks show. Access is limited to registered Apple developers. The code should, however, ease support of iOS 5's native Twitter integration into third-party apps. iOS 5 is due to arrive sometime this fall, either later this month or by mid-October. Mosaid to manage 2,000 Nokia patents, may sue Apple and more
Mosaid signaled the likely start of a rash of new patent lawsuits after it reached a deal to manage 2,000 Nokia patents. The deal, which sees it take control of Core Wireless Licensing, will let Mosaid license out and sue over alleged infringements of 1,200 "standards-essential" patents for 2G, 3G, and 4G, as well as 800 general wireless implementation patents. Rather than pay for the patents directly, it was gambling that it could pay for the deal through royalties and lawsuit payouts in the future.

Toshiba announces Camileo Clip, X200 and X400 camcorders
Not surprisingly, Toshiba is covering all the bases at IFA today, with it now also announcing its latest batch of camcorders. That includes the Camileo Clip pictured above (which actually has a clip 'round back for hands-free shooting), as well as the more traditional Camileo X200 and X400, all three of which record 1080p video and rely exclusively on SD cards for storage. The X200 and X400 also, of course, steps things up quite a bit in terms of features, the standout ones being a 12x optical zoom on the X200 and a 23x zoom on the X400. Eddy Cue becomes Apple's senior VP of Internet Software
Eddy Cue has been promoted to the position of Senior VP of Internet Software and Services at Apple, an email memo from CEO Tim Cook reveals. "Eddy will report to me and will serve on Appleís executive management team," the message elaborates. Toshiba takes second shot at tablets with ultra-thin AT200
Toshiba confirmed plans on Thursday to make amends for a year of rough entries into tablets with a completely new model. The AT200, better known as the Excite, drops the thick rubberized shell of the Thrive to become the thinnest tablet of any type. At 0.3 inches thick, it's thinner than the iPad 2 or Galaxy Tab 10.1 and is even slimmer than the slightly thicker Galaxy Tab 7.7 unveiled the same day.

Yoink takes the drag out of file dragging
Lion users, have you ever tried to drag a file between full-screen apps? It's a bear to do, especially with a trackpad. Matthias Gansrigler at Eternal Storms (no stranger to TUAW) has solved this problem with an app called Yoink.
Yoink simply watches for you to start dragging a file and when the app notices this dragging motion, it opens a small drawer on the side of your screen. You can drag files to the drawer, and even stack multiple files in there, then switch spaces and drag them back out. It's simple, it's effective and it solves the problem quite elegantly.

Samsung has added two new point-and-shoot cameras to its range, the MV800 and the WB750. The center-piece of the MV800 is its large 3-inch capacitive touch screen flexible viewer. Samsung Galaxy Note tries phone, tablet mix with pen support
Samsung's most unique launch at IFA on Thursday was the Galaxy Note, an attempt to blur the lines between phones and tablets. Its centerpiece is a 5.3-inch, 1280x800 Super AMOLED screen that's both extremely crisp but also optionally takes pen input. Called the S Pen, the bundled stylus can be used to draw, handwrite notes, or to annotate screen captures.

Had enough Samsung this morning? Well, how about a little more Samsung, then. Also on the company's laundry list of new devices is the Wave, which was announced earlier this week. The Wave 3 is the highest end of the three new devices carrying that name, packing a zippy 1.4GHz processor, which seems to handle tasks with ease. Like most of the rest of the products introduced here at IFA, the screen is the centerpiece of the device, a brilliant 4-inch WVGA unit. Samsung met expectations with a slew of new Android hardware. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the direct sequel to Samsung's very first mobile tablet and is also the first to use a tablet-sized AMOLED screen, fitting its own 7.7-inch, 1280x800 Super AMOLED Plus screen. How excited is Samsung about the new Galaxy Note? The company is convinced that the device heralds a whole new space for the industry, something in between the smartphone and the tablet. And what's the space called? The Note, of course. At 5.3 inches, the thing does feel a lot more like a cell phone than a tablet -- albeit a really large one. It's still reasonably portable, certainly more so than the also recently announced Galaxy Tab 7.7, but the added screen real estate might not be worth the extra pocket space for those who don't use their portable devices to watch movies.

Auch beim ersten Smartphone von Medion sind die Informationen im Moment noch dürftig. Das 4.3"-Display wird uns Android 2.3 zur Verfügung stellen, soviel ist sicher. Das war es dann aber auch schon. The mount clips right around the iPad, and it also has two hotshoes for things like lights or microphones, a screw fitting for a place to mount a lens converter, and a kickstand on the back to hold the iPad up as usual. Samsung's NX200 camera: 20.3 megapixels, interchangeable lenses, full HD video
Samsung continues its camera announcements today with the NX200, a 20.3 megapixel interchangeable lens system using the company's proprietary APS-C CMOS sensor. It also features a high-speed continuous mode that shoots up to 7fps and full HD video recording, 1920x1080 at 30p. If those specs aren't enough, notice the wide ISO range, from 100 to 12800, covering seven stops. Availability hasn't been announced yet, but pricing should run about $900 with an 18mm-55mm zoom lens and on-camera flash -- a number of other lenses will roll out in the coming months. When you think of factors affecting Internet speed, domain name servers probably don't top your list. But a consortium including Google, OpenDNS and a number of content delivery networks believes otherwise, and wants to draw attention to DNS optimization. To that end they've proposed the Global Internet Speedup initiative. What's that, you ask? The group wants to append truncated IP addresses to typical webpage requests: that will provide geographic information, letting providers make better choices about how to serve their users.

Fujifilm makes X10 official with extra-large EXR sensor
As promised, Fujifilm on Thursday unveiled the X10. Its lower-cost counterpart to the X100 is a bridge between the SLR-grade flagship and point-and-shoots with a 2/3-inch, 12-megapixel sensor that represents its largest-ever EXR sensor. As with its ancestor, lens quality is the cornerstone: it has the same f2 aperture up close but now has a 4X (28-112mm equivalent) zoom and can still shoot at a wide f2.8 even at the longest distance.

Spotify offers API to iOS developers
Spotify has launched an API service that could have some really interesting results for both iOS developers and users of the music-sharing program. The API allows access by iOS developers to all of Spotify's 15 million music tracks, which can be played or used as they see fit.
There are some interesting ideas to play with here. Developers could make a game that uses Spotify tracks, do things like match up music tracks for recommendation, or hook them into any number of various app types out there. Hulu launches streaming in Japan for about $20 US monthly
Hulu may not have a new owner yet, but it does have an international presence now that it launched a subscription service in Japan today. Hulu.jp brings "hundreds of premium feature films and thousands of episodes of popular TV shows" to bear, for ¥1,480 per month ($19.19 US). Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi confirm plans for government-backed LCD joint venture
We had a pretty clear indication that some official word was coming soon, and Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi have now confirmed that they intend to pool their LCD manufacturing efforts and form a new joint venture (expected to be completed by the spring of 2012). That effort is getting a $2.6 billion shot in the arm courtesy of a Japanese government-backed investment fund, which itself will own 70 percent of the new company -- to be dubbed Japan Display -- while Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi will each get a 10 percent share.

Epson will be adding AirPrint support for wireless printing to major new models of Epson inkjet printers starting next month. A number of HDTV and Blu-Ray devices now sport Ethernet ports for connecting to a home network, but do not have built-in wireless capability. Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac: Faster, new features, better mobility
Parallels 7 has just been announced. The latest iteration of Parallels, the virtualization environment that currently has about 75% of the total market share for VM software, ships with more than 90 new and enhanced features.

Netflix price hike kicks in tomorrow, but you may not have to change right away
The time is running out on August, and with it goes the existence of Netflix's streaming and disc services as a single package for $7.99. AirPlay-compatible iHome iW1 to ship September 26
The rechargeable AirPlay speaker from iHome, the iW1 will be arriving in retailers and available through iHome starting September 26th. The long-anticipated system uses Airplay and either direct-from-device or an iOS app to control multiple units throughout a space to stream music from a Mac or iOS device. Apple has seeded its seventh beta version of iOS 5 for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch to registered developers. Apple at its Developer Center has posted iOS 5 beta 7 as well as corresponding iTunes 10.5 and Xcode 4.2 beta releases. The iOS update includes the expected bug fixes and improvements. The iOS 5 beta 7 SDK is now available for download by paid devs at the iOS developer site. As with previous betas, you'll also find all the other items that continue to be synchronously updated to support the beta. Sign in with your developer credentials to gain access to the updated SDK.
Because it cannot be said too often, make sure you read any release notes on-site. For everyone intoxicated by new technologies that might allow you to update using other means, I cannot strongly encourage you enough to go to the site and read the release notes. Maxim returns to iPad as Maxim+, revamps system

Facebook may show music service Sept. 22 with Rdio, Spotify
Facebook's f8 conference next month is now very likely to include its rumored major music initiative, tipsters disclosed Wednesday. I really loved iBlast Moki 2, and I feel like since it hit the App Store, the app hasn't quite gotten the recognition it's deserved. If you enjoy a good puzzle game, this one has you covered -- it's a really complex and interesting title that's wrapped up in a cute and easy-to-understand skin. If you want a time-wasting game for the Mac, consider Rail Maze. It's a free download from the Mac App Store that offers more than 100 puzzles. In fact, Rail Maze is a combination puzzle/action game, and the various levels highlight either a puzzle to solve or action to navigate. The puzzle game has you solving progressively harder obstacles as you navigate your train from one station to the next. The action levels are a railroad version of Pac Man, in that you must catch stars before a pirate train catches you.

Microsoft sued over location tracking in Windows Phone 7
Microsoft faced a lawsuit on Wednesday accusing it of violating privacy in Windows Phone 7. The federal Seattle suit claims that the phone's camera app marks the location over GPS even after the owner switches the feature off.
