iPhone dual-boot solution surfaces, not for the faint of heart

iPhone startet in Österreich mit zwei Tarifangeboten
T-Mobile bietet das iPhone ab dem 14. März 2008 zusammen mit zwei Tarifangeboten in der Östereich an. Während der Gerätepreis sich nicht von den Preisen in Deutschland unterscheidet, sind die angebotenen Tarife durchaus interessant. Für nur 39 Euro gibt es 1000 Freiminuten und eine auf drei Gigabyte limitierte Datenflat, allerdings ohne Frei-SMS.
Der größere Vertrag für 55 Euro beinhaltet dann neben mehreren Tausend Freiminuten (schaut selbst) auch 1000 kostenlose SMS-Nachrichten.
Wer ob des gravierenden Preisunterschieds erstaunt ist muss wissen, dass die Mobilfunktarife in der Alpenrepublik schon immer um einiges günstiger waren als die in Deutschland.

The 8800 GTS 512 and the Mac Pro (rev 2)
Having recovered our dead Mac Pro (it was well as we suspected: a motherboard break-down), we were able to try flashing a Gainward 8800 GTS 512 with 128 KB EEPROM. Once flashed, the card works fine under OS X. We even played around, overclocking at 740 MHz. GLView appears unable to exceed 800 fps.
We took a quick tour of Doom 3. The game remained perfectly fluid 2560x1600 at full settings However, while it is recognised under Windows pre-flash, it was not aferward. We are working to try to solve this problem which seems to be linked to the identification of this PCI card being 601 instead of 611 for a GT. EFI does not seem to want to activate it. With some highly motivated members of the forums, we will try to overcome this problem.

Refurb iPods price drop from Apple ...retail prices to follow?
We've seen this before. Apple, when they are about to do price drops start pushing the refurb prices way south. This month, the Apple Store started dropping the refurbished 4Gb Nanos to $129 and the 8Gb ones to $169.
The iPod Classics dropped even further to $209 for 80Gb and $299 for 160Gb.
iPod Touches? $229 for 8Gb and $329 for 16Gb.
Same is occurring in Britian.

Sony, Nokia shudder at iPhone games plan
Apple's iPhone will become one of the world's leading mobile gaming platforms, as games developers worldwide make plans to deliver titles for the platform, now the iPhone 2.0 SDK (beta) has been made available.
Like RIM with its Blackberry in the enterprise market, Sony, Nokia and other manufacturers creating mobile gaming devices (such as the PSP or Java-enabled mobile phones) face a tough battle as Apple makes its biggest move yet into the gaming market.

Apple US store offline and back again
Apple's US online store is out for lunch again this morning, with the customary "We'll be back soon" sign showing on the front page.
Apple's UK store and other European store fronts appear unaffected as the company seems set to bounce into another Apple Tuesday.
We call them Apple Tuesday because this is the day the company likes to introduce new products. However, merely because the store goes offline doesn't always mean new product releases.

Is Adobe Flash now crashing some Macintosh browsers? (Updated)
Update: I 'fixed' the problem by turning off the ability to view hidden files in the finder and restarting - or maybe it was just the restart? Or maybe it will break again. Does this work for any of you?
According to Apple's support forums, a lot of people have been having some issues with Flash lately. I know I am one of them. Is anyone else out there with Intel Macs with updated browsers and Flash Plugins having issues with sites like www.espn.com?

Over 100,000 download iPhone SDK
Apple has confirmed that in excess of 100,000 iPhone developers have downloaded the beta iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) in the first four days since its launch on March 6.
The iPhone SDK furnishes developers with the same set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools that Apple uses to create its native applications for the iPhone and iPod touch.
“Developer reaction to the iPhone SDK has been incredible with more than 100,000 downloads in the first four days,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing. Apple also revealed that over one million people have watched the launch video on Apple.com.

Crime spree ends thanks to GPS ankle bracelet

That's exactly what one Ohio resident got up to recently, though unfortunately for him, he was located by the GPS chip embedded in the aforementioned bracelet. 100,000 iPhone SDK already Downloaded
Apple announced that the iPhone SDK has already been downloaded 100,000 times. If the SDK is for sure a success among developers, one should not forget that many Mac users got their copy of the SDK simply to test it or watch the package made available by Cupertino.
To get a better idea of the iPhone SDK success, one will have to wait for June and/or the WWDC to quickly evaluate how many iPhone applications have been developed, as well as how many developers agreed to pay 100USD to get the coding key allowing the have their application available from the AppStore.

Still no GeForce 8800 GT for Mac Pro rev1 Owners
While the past months have been a mixed between hope and disappointment for Mac Pro rev1 owners, the GeForce 8800 GT to be compatible with the first Mac Pro generation is still not available. As a reminder, the reason is the EFI driver only available and compiled for 64-bits.
Even though a rumor from mid-January was reporting NVidia was working on a 32-bit driver, today it is not available; even though the company indicates it will need a couple of weeks. We think that developing a driver requires time, but if you really want to have done, it should not take months to get it ready, except if you decide (NVidia, NVidia+Apple, Apple) that such investment is not of financial interest.
Once more, even is Cupertino is not directly involved in this story, users will conclude that Apple is more interested about potential new customers than supporting or bringing satisfaction to Mac users. It Will Be Difficult to Upgrade MacBook Air HD
Since the MacBook Air was released, we have been watching the evolution of the 1.8" HD market more carefully. As you known the MacBook Air HD and SD uses the Zif PATA interface in order to gain space as well as the ability to use plate-based HD found in iPod classic.
But the PATA interface is an old format, and it slowly but surely loosing ground for all HD and even SSD format.
The last announcement made by Intel and Samsung about this topic is important. The future generation of SSD will be only available in SATA format. So, the strategy of purchasing a HD-based MacBook Air today, while expecting to install a SSD later on when prices will be lower, might simply prove to be not viable for a long time. One will probably not be able to install a 128GB SSD, but plate-based HDs should still be available for a longer time and with larger storage capacity than the current 80GB.
So, the next MacBook Air revision should quickly adopt the SATA interface.

Apple arbeitet an neuem iTunes-Update
Eigentlich wollte Apple mit dem aktuellen iTunes-Update 7.6.1 Probleme beheben, anstatt neue hinzufügen. Ein paar Tage nach dem Erscheinen der Aktualisierung tauchten aber schon die ersten Fehlerberichte einiger Nutzer auf. Die vor zwei Wochen aufgedeckten Probleme, scheinen dabei aber nicht die einzigen zu bleiben.

Beta des Iphone SDK bereits 100.000-mal heruntergeladen
Die Vorabversion von Apples Software Development Kit (SDK) für das Iphone ist nach Angaben von Produktmanager Philip Schiller seit ihrer Freigabe am 6. März bereits über 100.000-mal heruntergeladen worden. Damit können Entwickler auch Business-Anwendungen für das Smartphone erstellen. Die Final des SDK soll mit Version 2.0 der Iphone-Software im Juni erscheinen.

Erster Test: GeForce 9800 GX2 schlägt HD3870 X2
In den Zeiten, in denen sich nur bedingt an NDAs oder sonstige Absprachen gehalten wird, ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass wieder einmal ein kompletter Test einer GeForce 9800 GX2 im Internet aufgetaucht ist. Microsoft dementiert Blu-ray für die Xbox 360

Puzzle Quest für den Mac veröffentlicht
Das kanadische Software-Unternehmen TransGaming Technologies ist für Software bekannt, die das Ausführen von Windows-Spielen unter anderen Betriebssystemen erlaubt. Die Mac-Anwenderschaft bedachte TransGaming mit der Cider-Technologie, mit der unter anderem bereits Electronic Arts eine Reihe an Spielen an Mac OS X und Intel-Macs angepasst hat. Seit Beginn dieser Woche ist TransGaming aber auch selbst als Entwickler und im Bereich des Vertriebs von Mac-Spielen tätig.

AirPort-Update bringt keine AirDisk-Funktion
Gestern aktualisierte Apple die Software für seine AirPort-Basisstationen, in die auch Time Capsule miteinbezogen wurde. Kurz nach der Veröffentlichung zog man das Update wieder zurück, um es ein paar Stunden später wieder freizugeben. Was Apple zu diesem Schritt bewog, ist unklar. Die fehlenden Funktion, mittels einer an AirPort Extreme angeschlossenen USB-Festplatte Time-Machine-Backups auszuführen, integrierte man jedoch immer noch nicht.

SMash - sichere Mashups von IBM

N270 runs at 1,66 GHz with a 533 MHz bus and consumes only 2W will cost 44$.
To still lower the price, the foundery proposes the N230 which is identical however the consumptions rises to 4W and will cost 29$.
These two processors have only one core and use the Hyperthreading technology; this makes a return here after being abandoned with the Pentium 4.
With these processors at this price, we look forward in the next months to multimedia devices that are powerful yet having good battery life.

iPod-Defekt führt zur Untersuchung in Japan
Ein möglicher Defekt eines iPod nanos beschäftigt derzeit das japanische Wirtschaftsministerium. Funken soll das Gerät während des Aufladens gesprüht haben, ein Vertreter des Ministeriums glaubt an einen Defekt in dem Litium-Ionen-Akku des iPod nano. Der funkensprühende iPod wurde den offiziellen Stellen im März von Apple gemeldet, im Januar trat dieser auf. Verletzt wurde niemand.

Disney verkaufte bislang vier Millionen Filme

Taliban pressures Afghan cell networks into 5PM curfew
Filed under: CellphonesAfter a series of attacks on mobile phone towers, it appears life in Afghanistan has gotten even harder: the four privately-owned Afghan cell companies have all cowed to the Taliban's demands and begun shutting off their networks between 5PM and 7AM every night. The Taliban claims that the companies are aiding Afghan and NATO troops by leaving the networks operational, and has attacked 10 towers in the past few weeks, completely destroying six. We're not sure how big an impact the shutoff has on troops, but there's no denying the effect on Afghan citizens, many of whom rely on mobile phones to contact loved ones and summon medical services. Laser-guided EL-E robot offers point-and-grab operation, the future
Filed under: Robots While we're usually content to watch the slow, inevitable progress towards humanoid robots, the researchers behind this EL-E bot might very well be on to something. Instead of making a robot that acts like humans, they've built a robot that chases around the dot made by your laser pointer, and picks up whatever you point at with his crane. Not exactly on the path to replicants, but perhaps that's a good thing -- a bot that can pick up stuff you aim at and bring it to you is much more useful in the here and now. Plus EL-E yells out stuff like "Bob's your uncle" when he completes tasks, and if that isn't progress we don't know what is.

Japan launches a survey on the iPod Nano
Source : Associated PressAs a reaction to an enflaming iPod Nano battery, the Japanese government has launched a survey.
Apple will have to prepare a report that describes into detail under which circumstances such an accident could have happened, and will also have to provide the source and production numbers of these batteries.
The survey applies to iPod Nano models sold between September 2005 and September 2006, with the model number MA099J/A.
We hope for Apple that this is an isolated accident, and that there's no greater problem with all of these batteries.
About 425000 iPod Nano's of this type have been sold in Japan.
