Source : DailytechWestern Digital is facing a slow down phase, losing ground in its competition with other HD manufacturers, mostly with the lack of new products. Maybe to boost its R&D capacity or cut its production cost, WD acquired Komag, one of the main HD plate manufacturers.
The company is producing plates found in HD manufacturers by WD, but also for Hitachi and Seagate.
Komag is reported for being the key factor which allowed Hitachi and Seagate to recently break the 1TB capacity bar, allowing both company to be the first to offer a 1TB HD to consumers, at a premium price.
