California energy firm SunPower, Tianjin Zhonghuan Semiconductor, and an unnamed third partner said to be Apple have partnered to build three new solar farms in China that are intended to help Apple offset the power needs of its manufacturing and supplier operations in the country, which gets most of its power from coal-based plants. SunPower, which is already working on a 20-megawatt pair of solar farms for Apple in Sichuan province, said that the total output of all the solar farms, when complete, will top 210 megawatts.
