Fabrice Bellard, coder for the well-known FFMPEG video library and the QEMU virtualization hypervisor has unveiled the "Better Portable Graphics" (BPG) format. The new format, based on the HEVC open video compression standard, is intended to replace JPEG for mobile devices, or other utilizations where file size may be an issue.
