During Apple's iPhone media event today, SVP Phil Schiller announced that the new iPhone 5S includes a new "M7" chip, also known as a "motion coprocessor", that works alongside the new phone's A7 chip to continuously measure motion data. The new chip captures motion data from the compass, accelerometer and gyroscope to enable a new generation of health and fitness apps for the iPhone. Apple also announced that there is a new CoreMotion API in iOS 7 that identifies user movement and optimizations based on contextual awareness. To take advantage of the new hardware, Nike created a new "Nike+ Move" app that can tell if a user is walking, stationary or driving and rewards the user Nike Fuel movement ratings and integrating them into Game Center.
