Sony has formally unveiled it stacked CMOS sensor for smartphones. Last seen in January, the Exmor RS camera modules boast a backside-illuminated CMOS sensor which stacks the pixel layer over the signal ship, shrinking the module's size. The two layers being independent of each other, combined with the pixel layer and analog logic chip not having to compete for space, promises improved image quality compared to previous methods.
