Confirming a number of rumors, Microsoft has unveiled a series of self-branded tablets, referred to as "Surface," at a special event in Los Angeles. The devices appear to be aimed directly at the iPad, sporting a 10.6-inch display and a 9.8mm-thick magnesium chassis that helps keep the weight down to just 1.5 pounds. As expected, the hardware is powered by the company's touchscreen-optimized Windows 8 OS.
