Gartner released its quarterly and yearly mobile phone sales estimates and, not surprisingly, Apple was the leader in the smartphone market. Apple sold 37 million iPhones in the quarter and became the world's top smartphone vendor with 23.8 percent market share. Worldwide smartphone sales climbed to 149 million units in Q4 2011, a 47.3 percent year over year increase. Apple is also the top smartphone vendor for the year with a 19 percent market share. Total smartphone sales in 2011 grew 58 percent year over year and reached a staggering 472 million units sold.
