Steve Jobs, despite his enormous wealth and influence, lived in a quiet, upscale Palo Alto neighborhood with no gates, no walls and open to pedestrians and traffic. His house was a large but relatively modest brick home in the kind of setting where people went trick-or-treating on Halloween. Earlier this week, Apple security officials warned local police that Jobs might die soon, as a precaution to allow authorities to handle any crowds that might gather.
