Intel CFO Stacy Smith raised eyebrows Thursday with remarks after an investor event that the company would be open to the prospect of making chips for other companies that aren't using an Intel design. The executive was adamant that a deal was "not in the works today" but that Intel might take it up if a lucrative customer came about. It would be most open to making more x86 chips, but would consider even producing designs from rival architectures if it determined the incentives were strong enough.
