A new patent awarded to Apple shows plans for a new, slimmer 30-pin connector -- similar to the present 30-pin connector used in various iOS devices and their peripherals -- but able to carry many different types of data, including DisplayPort dual-lane (aka Thunderbolt) and USB 3 among others. If adopted, the connector could set a new standard -- allowing Thunderbolt adapters to connect legacy peripherals while enabling more direct USB 3, USB 2 and audio/video input and output.
