The USPTO has granted Apple a new patent, Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products. The company notes that applying a nitride coating to stainless steel can help to prevent scratching and other minor forms of damage. The described process nevertheless allows underlying color to show, preserving the overall look of a device.
