Google this afternoon told GOOG-411 users that it was shutting down the service November 12. The company justified dropping its unusual phone-in service by pointing to the level of smartphone apps. Voice search in both Android and the iPhone's Google Mobile app, as well as Android's support for Voice Actions, took away much of the need for this kind of service.
